  1. ps. Which arm do the flag/press patches typically go on?

I'm right handed, so I usually stick it to my left shoulder. But I think it's a matter of personal taste. Any choice you make will be the right one.

P.S The model is looking good so far. The ID-card around the neck is a nice touch. Since I assume he is supposed to be a frontline correspondent... maybe you should give the clothing a worn/dirty/rugged look when you highlight the textures.

  2. Let's stick to the RES addon folder, shall we. No FFUR, no other addons, nothing. Now, make a foolproof test:

    1) place a civilian man on desert island and make it your player

    2) place a west-soldier directly in front of the player

    3) name the west-soldier myUnit and give him a waypoint where you set his behaviour to SAFE

    4) place a trigger on the map. Make it a Radio Alpha [0-0-1] trigger.

    CONDITION: this

    ACTIVATION: myUnit switchMove "w_down1"

    5) hit preview and look at the western soldier. Done? Then hit 0-0-1 to fire the trigger. Check if he performs a switchMove or not

    6) if he doesn't perform the switchMove, change the behaviour of myUnit to AWARE (in the waypoint)

    7) try again

If none of these suggestions works there is something wrong with the addon. Throw it away, reinstall it or double check the name of the switchMove (i.e make sure there really is a move named w_down1)

EDIT. and btw... you cannot use switchMove and similar commands in a units init line. The init only accepts commands that are executed instantly (like moveinDriver or addWeapon). playMoves and switchMoves needs to be triggered by remote (trigger, script, function or waypoint)

  3. I've never been too exited about these sector controll type of missions, but it seems as if you have put a lot of effort into this one. The respawn dialog looks interesting. Can't wait to unPbo your mission to see how it was done. Will check it out when it arrives  xmas_o.gif

  4. You can use a waypoint as well as a trigger. It makes absolutely no difference. The problem is that you are using "this".

You have to name the unit in the editor. If you name him myGuy, the syntax should read:

    <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">myGuy switchMove "w_rest1"

To get the same unit out of the fixed switchMove position you use:

    <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">myGuy switchMove "NULL"

  5. Any camera suggestions? smile_o.gif

    Only two...

Nikon F1 series (first appeared in 1959 and remained one of the number one system cameras until late 80's)

Canon EOS 1 series (the number one press camera of the 1990's in Europe, also one of the best digital camera series of today - visually the modern digital version looks very similar to the 1980's models)

    camera.jpg

  6. The initial idea was just a civvie correspondent

I have a small suggestion about the correspondent. When I go to a hot zone I usually tape a small Swedish flag onto my left arm or the back of my jacket, because everybody loves us swedish guys and almost no one shoots at us  smile_o.gif It's a safety thing used by many correspondents. Other colleagues (from the US for example) simply makes a flag and writes "PRESS" or "JOURNALIST" or "SA HAFI".

It would be nice if you could:

    a) Enable setObjectTexture on the model, via the action menu. Thus letting the player chose if this arm patch is on or off (make an international patch that says "PRESS", it should do the trick).

    b) Define a bolean global variable to go with the armpatch. Thus enabling the mission designer to check if the patch is on or off from a script.

It gives more options to the correspondent and makes it even more fun to play one in the game I think.

EDIT: And why not include the option "hide film in pockets". It can be useful if the correspondent is questioned by curious soldiers at a checkpoint wink_o.gif

  7. Quote[/b] ]I've actually read numerous accounts of photographers using digital cameras to cover conflicts

Yes I know. I'm just beeing conservative. Keep up the good work. I will download your camera even if it's a digital camera... or 1920's box camera with phosphorous flashingpowder tounge2.gif

Quote[/b] ]I'll likely be going the route of checking the position of the fake projectile against a list of targets defined by the mission maker.

Sounds like a good idea. For me it´s more important to be able to register "hits" from the camera with a trigger/sensor than to actually retrieve jpg-pictures from within the mission.

Quote[/b] ]On a side note, I never knew you were a war correspondent. While you're not a photographer, your input is nonetheless very much appreciated.

Ex-war correspondent. I've been grounded since I came home from Iraq banghead.gif I would like to go to Afghanistan, but my wife doesn't aprove of my plans *sigh*. She think's it's dangerous inlove.gif

  8. Got a question for you photographer folks out there. I've seen pictures of journalists and photographers where their cameras have this large chunky thing attached to the bottom. An extension of sorts. What are those for, and how important are they?

Well I'm not a combat photographer, but if the advice of a writing correspondent is good enough...

If you refer to the box fitted to the lower part of the camera it is either batterys or the motor.

Yes, cameras have motors. Before the digital revolution you sometimes needed a special attachment to the camera to make it take repetetive shots (an automatic fire mode for cameras) because it takes some force to physically move the reel with the film around. That´s the block you see under older cameras.

The digital cameras of today don't need this extra force, but they do consume a lot of battery power when firing away rapid series. On modern cameras it's the batteries you see.

And as a sidenote... I've never seen a photographer who takes a digital camera to the battlefield (and I never bring my laptop either). Digital cameras are too unreliable. Older cameras are as essential to a combat photographer as paper and pencil to a reporter  smile_o.gif

About camera size: The first rule of all photographers is "the bigger the better" I like your wip pic's.

About combat photography in OFP: Isn't it possible to make the camera "fire" a bullet that makes no sound (apart from click) and no damage? That way it would be possible to check if a target was "hit" by the photographer (using eventhandlers). The hit represents a photo taken. From a missiondesigner point of view this would make the camera useful. Your objective as a photographer will be to take pictures of the target without getting hit yourself (just as in real life). And if you stick to older cameras each magazine represents one roll of film, each round represents one picture frame. A roll of film is about half the size as a revolver magazine, so two per magazine slot should be okay.

Sorry about my crappy english. My knowledge of proper names for camera components are almost non existent in english.

EDIT: Sorry. I didn't read the last two posts properly. I can see now that the bullet/picture idea is already discussed and I think it's a fabulous idea. I'm looking forward to your release. Let me know if you need a playtester.

  9. CTD's are usually addonRelated. Do you recieve any error messages after the crash?

The only difference between Sentinel II and Sentinel III (as far as I remember) is that the BAS helicopters turn up for the first time in the last part of the Sentinel trilogy(an MH-60 I think).

What version of BAS-Littlebirds are you using? The release I link to, or the updated unfinished version that TJ released a few weeks ago?!? I believe that the scond one replaces a few of the core files used by all BAS-helicopters (airWeapons.pbo) and I was using the older, official BAS-version when I designed the mission.

  10. Truly an enjoyable mod. I´ve played with it for two days non-stop now. Several high quality WWII missions are already availiable for download at http://fdf.joltan.de

I found some minor bugs while playing with the aircraft. Don´t know if it was mentioned already but the planes can fly through trees without crashing. Forrests stops them, though. This problem only exists with single trees placed outside the forrest areas.

  11. Yes, I agree you should watch the cutscenes. Unfortunately there is no such thing as an AA-bunker included in the mission, so I cannot help you. I've never heard of the addon and there is no such thing on my hdd. Hence it shouldn't be in the mission smile_o.gif

I'm quite sure it's an addon conflict, caused by an addon that you have and I don't have. Most likely it's a bunker of some sort. Better get them out of your addon folder again tounge2.gif Good luck

  12. The problem with most mods is that they promise to release stuff, and then nothing happens. You do it the other way around, it seems. First you declare your own mod dead, and then you release it anyway. What's wrong with Finland? Who cares... I love it. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you...  notworthy.gif

  13. I prefer ECP becase it boosts the part of the game I care about without increasing lag too much. When I play I can see my own rifle and my closest team mates clearly. The enemy, in the distance, is only visible as small grey shadows. Hence no point in replacing everything on the map.

That's why I don't care too much about total conversion mods. Total conversion mods also changes missions too much for my taste. Vehicles are faster or slower, producing effects never intended by the mission maker. Unit stamina, weapon performance and similar things are changed. Buildings show up in the wrong position, etc, etc.

My experience tells me that a well designed and carefully scripted mission can be almost unplayable using a total conversion mod. With ECP there's usually no problem. And I prefer carefully designed and scripted missions  icon_rolleyes.gif

But FFUR is perfectly allright for a friday-night-fire-fight-mission  pistols.gif I have both ECP and FFUR installed on my computer, but I try to use them wisely.

  14. Can you play as a rabit also??

Yes, you will find them under civillian-men in the editor. They work best in 3rd person view, though (otherwise a model bug distorts their vision when you play them).

Place the bunnies on the map, add a few enemies with destroy waypoints aimed at the rabbits and run like hell  wink_o.gif Great fun. Fantastic addon PC. I havent enjoyed an addon so much since Nephilim released the Mercenaries

  15. Nice addon. It´s funny and it adds atmosphere to the maps, even if the little critters are only included as eyecandy. The addon is so small it can be included with the missions when they are released. Good job PC. Now I´m going to make a mission where you play the rabbits smile_o.gif

  16. Maybe not what you´re looking for but...

there was a paperback roleplaying game named Twillight 2000, published in the 80's that covered a fictional conflict between NATO and the Warsaw pact in Europe.

Despite the name (2000), the paperback listed a lot of equipment (not only weapons and vehicles) used by every european army availiable in 1984. The books were also illustrated.

    TWILLIGHT 2000

    Publisher: Games Designers' Workshop (USA)

    Author: Franck Chadwick

    First publication: 1984

Genre: Military post apocalyptic set after the third world war.

If you can get hold of the 1984 or 1986 editions I think you will find what you need. Later editions from the 90's was updated with newer technology (and all the feeling of the original game faded away).

  17. The screenshots looks impressive. Good job. Will try it asap

    @Parker

A campaign makes it sound even more interesting. I'm at work and stuck with a MacIntosh, so I cannot check the content of the download until monday. Is the campaign you're refering to part of the DL, or are you making idle promises about future releases  huh.gif

EDIT: Just came home and noticed the DL link whistle.gif for some stupid reason these links doesn't show up on my mac tounge2.gif

  18. ...this just gets better and better. I restarted the campaign without ECP, and now it runs smooth, with full effects. The story makes replacement mods/addons/effects pointless IMO. I'm too concentrated on investigating what's happening on Malden to bother about flashes of light, tracers and similar unimportant things smile_o.gif

The atmosphere in Abandoned Army is really great. It reminds me of the old paperback RPG "Twillight 2000". Once again... good job Thobson.

  19. I've only just started. I did the intro and visited the cabin where Tatiana was held prisoner, and I'm stunned. You are a very good storyteller Thobson. You have created a genuine dramatic feeling already in the beginning. Good job, judging from the first look. My computer lagged a little bit too much with ECP and full settings, so I will restart it without ECP and lower settings now, before I continue.

  20. Truly excellent. My hat goes off to you Nephilim. This is the best soldier addon I've seen in a very long time. I especially like that they are not equipped with custom weapons, because it reduces download size. Very inspiring in a mission maker sense of the word  notworthy.gif

A little bug report for the next version:

    * Missing blood textures on all models

    * Jennifers laser pointer produces a "script not found" error message

    * Jennifers NV goggles does not work (didn't test the other units in darkness yet)

    * If Jennifers nightvison goggles are deployed while riding in a vehicle she becomes trapped in a switchMove, unable to move, with her hands positioned in front of her face.

Keep up the good work. I am really looking forward to the final version.

  21. I ned more info to help you...

Does the game freeze or can you still move around?

What kind of error message are you refering to (the one you cannot read)? Is it a grey box with an OK button or is it the small white print that shows up in the top half of the screen to indicate a scripting error?

I tested the scene and was able to recreate the following problem...

If you jump in to the drivers seat of the jeep before the soldier, you will block his way into the jeep (you are supposed to sit in the passenger seat and the AI soldier in the drivers position). Then the AI soldier will just stand there and you wont be getting any more instructions. Well, this is just 15 seconds into the first mission. If this is your problem, restart and follow the instructions. A good soldier follows orders smile_o.gif
