    Zeus AI Combat Skills

I've got the same problem. As far as I can tell it's because when using Zeus AI you allways get your radio removed from your equipment as soon as the battle starts (I think the feature of having your radio enabled only when you actually have a radio in your inventory was added with OA). And I think it's the same with most of the AI soldiers. When you look in the inventory of a dead AI most of them doesn't have radios (but some have it, maybe those who were killed at the start of the battle? so the script wasn't fast enough to steal their radio?)

    ZEUS Nam

First of all, great job Mondkalb, you keep amazing with what you can do for this game. My little suggestion/idea is maybe you could place some default roads along your trails which are just plain island textures, run Visitor's smoothing roads script and then delete the roads. I think this way the paths would look more natural, would have less edgy bumps (I don't know if that effect is desired). Again, great work.

I didn't use 'clone' option, I just added the trees by 'Add object type'. I've just repeated the procedure to be sure it's not my mistake and it happened again. My settings are 512 x 4, mask is 2048x2048. Steps: 1. Load Forest mask 2. Analyze image as a result I have two available colors 3. Add ca\plants2\tree\t_betula2f with 70% probability to first color 4. Add ca\plants2\tree\t_fagus2f with 30% to the first color 5. Add ca\plants2\tree\t_betula2f with 30% to the first second color (sorry for the mistake) when I click 'add object' the betula2f is added to the second color with probability 30% but at the same time the 70% of betula2f from the first color changes to 30% I can upload the mask but it's an ordinary 2048x2048 png with just two colors (ok, I uploaded it: http://img143.imageshack.us/i/wolrldtoolstest.png/). edit When I use copy-paste function the problem doesn't seem to appear.

First of all, thanks for the marvelous tool. It really helps a lot in developing reasonably looking terrains. But I've run into a problem. It seems to me that I can't use one object at two mask's colors with different probabilities of placement. Let's suppose I have two-colored (eg. green and red) vegetation mask. I want the green color to represent a forest with majority of betula trees and minority of fagus trees so I add to that color t_betula1f (with 70%) and t_fagus2f (with 30%). The red is to represent a forest with majority of fagus tres and minority of betula trees, so I add the trees to the red color with probabilities 70% and 30%. And then I realise that probabilities in the green color were also changed and now I have at both colors betula with 30% and fagus with 70%. Is that intended? Is than a bug? Do I make something wrong?
  7. IceBreakr, are you sure? I know that this can happen. We can see it e.g. on a beautiful terrain Celle. I've got the same bug on one of my maps but on some other map tests there's no such bug. It seems it happens sometimes and other times not. I can't identify the factor that causes it. Anyone has some thoughts or experiences?

    Polish President dead

Indeed, it's astonishing how many politicians and reporters who only a few days or weeks ago defamed President Kaczynski, laughed at him and ridiculed him now 'discover' that he was an honest, open, warm and wise man (I've heard a few academic lectures given by the President, who was a profesor of law sciences, and, I dare to say, an expert in modern European history. He wasn't a good speaker but surely he had very wide-spread and valuable knowledge), maybe not so handsome and maybe not good at public speaches and PR, but a man who really believed in what he did and did it not for himself but for his country. And they laughed to death at his ideals, phisical appearence etc. As one of the Polish politicians said: not every politician should now say how sorry he is. Some should remain silent. And of course the media's hipocrisy doesn't concern only the President. The situation is similar with many other victims of the crash, as Kurtyka, Kochanowski, Walentynowicz and others. I don't believe any conspiracy stories about the plane crash. I also agree that the Russians are very friendly and helpful and act just as they should. I do appreciate it. But on the other hand I think Richard Pipes was right in a yesterday's interview when he said that he's affraid that this crash will be a reason of deterioration of relations between Poland and Russia. As he said, it's not logic. It's psychology. And I've already saw examples of that (a local shopkeeper saying 'Mister, the Russians did it, it's obvious').

    Polish President dead

It's really hard to believe this tragedy is true. As Wolle said they were on their way to honour the members of the Polish elite whow were executed in Katyn. And on the plane there were a few members of the families of the people who were executed there . They died on their way to give the respect to their ancestors. Let them rest in pace.

    A hooray for the AI

In my opinion the two following sentences are true: Although the Arma2's AI often don't seem too smart it is in fact based on a piece of very sophisticated programming. Although the Arma2's AI is in fact based on a piece of very sophsticated programming it ofthen don't seem too smart. I suppose that the AI is sophisticated. But there is a big difference in what the AI does and what it shows it does. Maybe it considers the dead zones of fire, maybe it takes complicated tactical decisions but it doesn't show that much to a player. All the player sees is that it runs here and there without knowing why it does so and if some actions the AI takes are totally random or 'intended'. This could be improved (and in Arma2 in fact is a bit improved when compared to Ofp of Arma) by factors like communication (look at e.g. DSAI addon) or animations (gestures, more than one animations for one action, facial expressions, animations for human-like actions as panic, or taking cover) - visual or audial ways of comunication with the player. There is a big room for improvements in the areas. And another thing is one of the biggest (IMHO) mistakes in the design which is the lack of ability to use cover by the AI. By the ability to use cover I mean the basic actions: hidding from the fire and popping out from the cover to fire. I know that it is not that easy to make AI use cover. I (and many other much more skilled script makers) did a lot of scripting tests since OFP. But the fact is that without it we will never have a simulation of the real combat. It is one of the most basic infantry combat actions. Look at this, the most of real life battles are not win-or-perish situations. In BIS games (not to say that it is only in BIS games, but BIS games are supposed to be more simulators than the other arcadish games) almost every battle ends in the totall anihilation of one of the sides. And no, it is almost imposible to change it by the mission design (if you don't agree, please show me a mission with the realistic design and realistic outcome; I would be the most grateful). And the using of cover function is a base for other more complex combat tactics or behaviours. How a suppressing fire can be used if the AI can't take cover? How a defense or ambush scenarios can be done properly? Also, the main goal of flanking maneuvers is out when the enemy is not using cover. How a panic or a fear-for-your-life effect can be moddeled? As consequence, the Arma2's AI is a greate ilustration of the rule: "A maneuver without a fire is fatal." That said, I'm still a big fan of BIS games but that doesn't mean that I can't disagree with the program for development of newer games. I suppose that at this stage of the engine it can be very hard if not impossible to modify the very basic routines of the AI, and I don't know how closely is the AI connected to the other modules of the engine. I, of course, don't have an insight in how the AI is done but I can see the effects. And the effects are what the players see, and by what they usually judge the game.

I had such a situation before last Christmas. I gave him food, tea, my brother walked him to a homeless shelter (BTW run, as a lot of such institutions, by blood-drinking catholic priests, not by the state), but they didn't accept him because he was under infulence of alcohol (it's a general rule that homeless who are drunk are not accepted to homeless shelters, it's their choice). And I had a lot more similar situations during my life. A homeless man wants some money from me. I always say: ok, I can go to a shop and buy you some food, I won't give you money because I'm affraid you will spend it for alcohol. Maybe 10% agree on such conditions and took food from me. The other 90% curse me, explain somethig or walk away not saying anything. From what I know there are almost always free places in homeless shelters in my city. But a lot of homeless people prefere to drink. I'd say it's their choice. Noone should be forced to work just to allow other persons to do nothing and only drink (and paying for it from the taxes would be forcing majority to sponsor those drunkards).

Actually, whatever you or I think about the RIGHT of every citizen to vote (let's call it a moral aspect), it is a very important argument from the PRAGMATIC point of view. If laws (for example tax laws) are formulated by (or to please) the majority who have no idea about anything but their backyard, who usually care not for the so-called 'common good' of the society but only for the good of their proffesion (eg. miners, flight-controllers, railway workers etc.) and who declare they don't care about the politics, how the laws can be good, just etc.? Politicians in democtacies often become hostages (resp. 'representants') of majority and won't make any decision that won't be popular. In many modern democracies it has such an effect that elections are won not by people who have some knowledge and skills but by populists who promise everything to the voters and will make the greatest Eurovisia-like show during the elections. I'm not sure myself what is the answer. But to bring down anyone who sees the problem with the ad personam argument: "what you say is a discrimination" doesn't solve the problem.

You should have told that to all those poor people who emigrated from Eastern Block countries to the West (especially to the USA) during the '80 in hope of better life before they made that tragic mistake. On the other hand did you hear about emigration of people from the USA to the Eastern Block countries in the '80? Is there a lot of ecconomical emigrants from the USA in Warsaw? Remember that it was easier to get a passport in the USA and go to e.g. Poland (what a greate fact for PRL's propaganda, claiming that PRL is much better than the Western countries, would that be!), than to get a passport in Poland to go to the USA.

    Making forests in ArmA2

Or the other way around. If you already have a mask_lco, you can easily create masks for maskmapper and be sure you place trees only on a 'forest floor'. (and as mask_lco is bigger than usual mask for maskmapper it's easier to downsize the mask_lco than upsize mask from maskmapper; the latter can require additional smoothing resized pixel blocks). :)

USSR != Poland; military technic != civil technic; The USSR collapsed because it wanted to have so good military to be a match for the USA. So they had to move resources (they could do this because of centralised ecconomy), including human resources (i.e. inventors and technicans) to military sector. That's why you can compare US and USSR military vehicles but you cant compare trabant and mercedes, polonez and other western cars, 'frania' washing machine whith western ones etc. Also don't underestimate the Soviet industrial espionage. No, I don't ignore it. In fact I emphasise it. It goes like this: When a factory is owned by a state there's no real 'owner' (the evil, egoistic capitalist) who would look after the factory to make it efficient and profitable. If noone cares for the factory, people don't work as they should. So there's no goods (the factories are inefficient). This is one of the main mechanisms in which communism/socialism is ineffecient. Sorry, Poland doesn't have so much natural resources. I regret it too. Also compare what was the status of Poland and Sweeden in the end of WWII. We didn't start from the same level.

I didn't say THEY are 'homo sovieticus'. I wouldn't say that, because they are acting. Homo sovieticus are apathetic people who won't act on their own and wait for someone else (e.g. the state) to make what they should do. For example pretending that they don't see that someone is being robbed not to have any troubles. I generally agree with that. It's the one (maybe even the most important one, I don't know) of the reasons we have such law. You're partially right that many people don't think it's their state because they had hope that changing the system in 89 will be enough and we will at once have the Western life standards. And it occured that the state after 89 is also not a state for a ordinary people but for people with connections (see for example Roman Kluska). But it is also true that the Polish society was very seriously damaged by the 1939 - 1989 period. The war, the stalinistic repressions killed a lot of active part of the Polish society (including university professors, military technicians etc.) and then a state which did not promote creativity, thinking for yourself, but conformism and obedience. See for example Polish science. The most of professors on universities had to be marxists-leninists and that was a deciding factor in their cariere, not their competence. (with a bit of exception when it comes to technical universities, where competence had a bit more of importantce). Look at pre 89 attitude to work. You know the phrase 'Wether you stand or lay, you are bound to be payed' ("czy się siedzi, czy się leży tysiąc złotych się należy"). It was like that everywhere. And after the 89 private businessmen required from workers to really work in work! Think for it. When the system changed, the Polish society wasn't renewed as with a touch of a magic wand.

I'm supprised to agree with vilas in many points (mostly about the facts, but not about causes and the recipe to change them). Eg. the 'thick (bold) line' was a mistake (both in pragmatic and moral respects). Concerning the concessions for many, many parts of the economical activity. Of course the concessions are needed to 'guarantee the high level of services and products' and only the best businessmen should receive them. Because the free market supposedly is not able to produce high level of services and products. It must be controlled by the state. The effects are like vilas described. Concessions are given to families, friends and those who will pay the bribe. The law in Poland IS sick, and it gives a victim less rights than a criminal. It's partly because of pursuing Western European standards of treating crminals (in a humanistic way - like in the Sweeden for example), partly because of the (I'm quite convinced it is) malicious intentions (or sometimes their stupidity - like with the projected law forbiding opening the shops on Sundays) of many Polish politics after 89, partly because of the fact that its modified and modifed all over again the old law from before 89. The people are apathetic and such cases as vilas and topas described have place too frequently. I've also have a friend who was beaten in the bus because tried to defend an old lady attacked by a few young criminals. He was almost beaten to death and nobody in the bus helped him. It partly may be because people 'care only about money'. Maybe in some cases. But much of it is because of a phenomenon that some sociologists call 'homo sovieticus' (it's a sociological term, not a racial one as vilas tried to interpret it in some other thread). Many people in Poland still have an attitude 'let's not get into trouble', they don't trust it's own state or the Police. Before the 89 it was almost a virtue to cheat the Polish state. People didn't recognized it as 'their own' state. And the repercussions of such attitudes are still here. Almost everyone tries to cheat on taxes (or even if he doesn't do it, usually he does it not knowing he does; the Polish tax laws are insane eg. if a parent gives to his children or family more than 9637zl during 5 years, it can be money, food or presens, he has to write a form to a tax office to cancel the taxing that because of the family relations. nobody does it. if you give your girlfriend - she's not your relative - a presen she should pay an income tax. if you give a hitchhiker a lift he should tax his income. The laws arent executed by the government, but they are there, and if a civil servant is in mood he can bring down almost anyone with them). Another thing is waiting for the state to do everything. I'm observing now how my neighbours wait for the city services to clear the town from the snow. They won't take a shovel and clear an exit from their own backyard because 'the city should do it'. It doesn't matter that it would take them a 30minutes. They'd rather don't use their cars for a week or so. And the same thing is with the Police. Many people think. I'm not responsible for maintaining the law and order. The Police is. I won't do their job.

  21. lecholas

    11/26

Yes, the jist of my point is that Stalin killed much more people (wether you take "his own" or "not his own") than Hitler. Which is true. :) Where did numbers of people imprisoned and killed in gulags turned out to be total bollocks? Did I miss it? I keep listing Stalin's crimes, being cautious in numbers. E.g. Norman Davis estimates the total number of Stalin's victims to about 50 millions. It's not my idea recognising the greate famine on the Ukraine as a crime against the humanity (read at least the first paragraph: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor. But to put in my mouth such nonsenses as you did in your last post is immature.

  23. lecholas

    11/26

Not 60 millions. I don't know how many. But you're wrong when you say "I don't agree that Stalin killed his own people." Valkiria I think. From what I read it's rubish. If we agree to use arguments like "some say... and some say" there's no point in the discussion. You know. Some say that there is God, some say that there isn't, and the truth lies in the middle.
  24. lecholas

    11/26

I don't agree either. Even if you narrow the category of 'own people' so much, Stalin killed a lot of his own people who were loyal to him. It was "just in case", as an example that even the slightest suspiction can be a sentence of death, or simply as a mistake in the huge murdering machine which the USSR was. It's the other way around. If you count great famine at Ukraine and great purge it's the Stalin who killed 100 times more of his own people before Hitler even started his killing. And I remind you that until 1941 Stalin was an allie to Hitler and it would still be the case if the Germans didn't attack the USSR. So I don't really understand why you write that Stalin "stopped" Hitler. Ok, so everyone is equally evil. Let's rejoice now! To quote the classics: "Please! This is supposed to be a happy [FORUM]. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who."
  25. lecholas

    11/26

That's strange because AFIK UK soldiers captured by the Germans were held in uncomparbly better conditions than gulag's prisoners (citizens of Soviet Union, of Eastern Europe countries, German POWs etc). And I'm not sure where do you take the numbers of Stalin's victims from, but they seem to me much too low. One quick look at wikipedia (I'm, not saying it's a very reliable source; it's from the Polish version) tells that according to Solzhenisyn about 60 million people died in gulags. And according to Robert Conquest 42 million people are confirmed by gulags documents to die in gulags, and guesses that about 10 to 30 million people died in the transports to the gulags, in effect of illness and exhaustion after leaving the camps. The number (according go Conquest) of people who were prisoners of gulags during the period 1942-53 was about 10-12 millions which amounts to about 5% of the whole USSR's population. The year death rate was about 10 to 20%. I can only agree: "Bloody good job Joe Stalin." Edit: Of course that's only gulags. No mass executions counted. No NKVD local prisons victims. And so on and so on. Anyway, I don't understand why you won't agree with what I wrote. You don't agree that 'the final solution' was worse than 'many gulags' which were worse than 'few gulags'. Or you're saying that the UK and the USA were as bad (or as good) as the USSR, and only the Germany was worse? Well, I can only quote you on this: "Utter bollocks I'm afraid." I didn't write that the UK or the USA went to war because of Jews. I know that the UK and the USA didn't want to believe in the raports from e.g. the Polish underground about what was happening the concetration camps.
