  1. Hi everyone,

I have just taken a look on the poll settings and I can't see anything wrong. I also submited few test votes with various and really "exotic" (long, multiple dots and commas) email addresses and the form always accepted it.

During the recent 2009 Awards we have uncovered many attemtps of multiple voting, so this time we have introduced email confirmation system. Nothing is watertight, of course. Still, the email confirmation is kind of obstacle which might prevent the most easiest multiple voting while being still somehow acceptable by most of the participants.

Please, try the basic precautions like cookie cleanup and alternative email address, that's all I can suggest now. We will check the settings once again just for sure but I'm afraid there is nothing else to be done while the nominations are in progress.

UPDATE: After another few attempts it really turned out the issue might be too long domain name. System rejects anything exceeding 17 characters...

  2. Hi everybody

I was wondering if old OFP Veterans are still playing BIS games...

I used to be playing OFP every evening for several years, most of the time spent with editor and other tools. It was ultimate experience. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't really excited by it. So you can imagine the satifaction of mine, once I became an employee at BI :)

Recently I have surprisingly found my cheap Acer Aspire One netbook is capable to run the old gold game pretty well! So I'm in again, and now it's also my son enjoying BI games too. Pure my wife... seems she will never get rid of that :)

In case you experience an "Error found in file EXPANSIONS\ADDONS\missions_e.pbo" error during the update installation, click the "Ignore" button and continue with installation.

When finished, download the file missions_e.pbo separately here, then search and replace the original file within your Arma 2 installation folder.

  6. I think what it does is make people aware that a very involved community exists. Especially people who haven´t been with BIS´s games for a long time and are completely new to the experience might not even begin to scan the forums or google for community websites.

Having some sort of database on the Company website shows dedication to the community, which is a good argument for the game, isn´t it?

As far as advertising goes, this is a nice Idea. Getting more people to play the game, in the long run, can only be good for the game and the community in general. :P

    My two cents

Thank you for saying that, it is the very point of the intention of having the community dedicated section on the official website.

Also thanks to sbsmac for his suggestions, some of them are really the strike home.

For all who are asking for including the community content into the game more or less directly, we already do that! There is a number of people working both externally or interanally who participated on ARMA2 project - for example Mike Malvin and his great CTI introduced as Warfare at ARMA1, Mapfact members working on terrain for the datadisk and many, many more...

But I say again, putting every great project into the game is almost impossible because of many reasons:

    • Copyrights
    • Simply the size of the data which might grow significantly
    • Difficult management of such number of projects
    • And many, many more...

Also, what I feel is that most of the community authors would prefer the absolut freedom in comparison to the conditions and requirments which would have to be accepted in case of the closer cooperation with BI.

Regarding to "focus on game engine, let the community make the content" . I think this happens already since the original OFP. We consider our game engine to be rather a "platform" then "just another milsim game". But we must bring some playable content too :)

  7. We spend at least 30min per week to tell rookies and even some regulars how to set up proper -mod line. And the ever lasting "ohh, I need to restart game in order to work?" ;)

I'm afraid implementing MOD Manager into the game would be possible. There are already couple of them made by community, aren't they?

But, I have heard something about pbo file association around here as the possibility to run mission / campaign / addon by double click only. However, this won't probably solve the MOD issue.

  8. Hi everyone and all of you creative members of our community in particular.

As I wrote in this official announcement, we will appreciate any advices / suggestions. So, here is the place for discussion, everyone is welcome!

  9. Hi everyone and all of you creative members of our community in particular.

We have promised we will support our community as much as possible and here comes another service we want to offer to you. From January 2010 we plan to introduce a new section at www.arma2.com called Guerrilla / Community. This page will be dedicated to the entire community content created for ARMA or ARMA 2, as we feel it deserves more public attention.

What we offer is the possibility to participate in the content published at this website. It's the opportunity for you to present your work to a much wider public and newly recruited players too!

    Content

This kind of content is expected to be published at the Community Page:

    • User made MOD / Addon / Tool announcement
    • User made SP / MP Mission / Campaign announcement
    • New website announcement
    • Weekly reports from ARMA2 news sites
    • Important community events
    • Useful web links

    First Steps

If you are interested in such collaboration on the official ARMA 2 website, just follow these steps to become a contributor:

    1. Go to this contact page at the ARMA 2 website and complete the form with these details:
      • Your real name, city, country where you live.
      • Your nickname used at the Bohemia Interactive forums.
      • What community group / MOD / website you represent.
      • What kind of content you want to contribute.
      • Which language(s) you speak (English is required as minimum)

[*]Please note that all details are mandatory and without them the request will be deleted.

[*]Once you send the form, just wait until it's processed in Bohemia Interactive, which might take up to several days as every single request will be handled manually.

[*]Once the request is approved you will obtain an email with your newly created user account at www.arma2.com to be able to log in and post the article or web link you want to publish.

    Rules

There are several rules for all contributors which must be followed at all times:

    1. Only true and confirmed information directly related to ARMA / ARMA 2 user made content or activity is required. No spam, slander, lies, mystification and so.
    2. Clear, brief article. No double posts or unbearably long stories.
    3. Announcements, releases or major updates only, no WIP reports or minor updates.
    4. Weekly news reports up to date, no releases older than one week in the summary.
    5. Proper and spell-checked language. No irregular/slang words or any explicit content.
    6. One image per post. (Except news sites weekly reports). Every image must be hosted on your own website or on free public image hosting (ImageShack and so).
    7. All content should have the permissions of their respective creators, if there is any doubt that content permissions have not been sought you must not submit it to the website. Any content found to have been created without the prior permission of those who created any part of it, whether that be script, texture, model, sound, etc. will be removed from the website immediately and it is unlikely the person claiming this content as their own work will have any further content published on this community site.

There will be no warning / infraction. Any violation of these rules will have serious consequences such as both arma2.com and official forums account ban. As the venture progresses it is of course likely that further rules/clarifications will be required, which you will receive notification of.

    Operation

After submission, every single article will require approval and publication by official administrator / moderator. The user created article might be deleted without explanation if considered improper by administrator / moderator. Nobody should expect it 100% certain that their submission will be published. Authors who prove themselves reliable and trustworthy may obtain higher user status to be able to post and publish their submissions immediately and they may become moderators in the future.

We will also appreciate any non-English submissions. However, the mandatory is to provide correct translation to English. The list of languages available follows:

    • English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Russian

    Future

This service is not meant to be a competitor to established community websites, this service should hopefully complement the incredible work that the numerous news sites have performed for many years, nor do we plan to host files or images of user made stuff at Arma2.com for now. We hope this concept may prove itself viable and useful so we could introduce even more at www.arma2.com in the future.

Please, don't hesitate to contact us! We look forward to hearing your feedback / suggestions at www.arma2.com.

  10. Hi all

Helicopters kill tanks by two methods. Static long range and/or pop up guided missile attacks. And high speed rocket or cannon attacks.

The tank can only kill helicopters it can see, or bring its weapons to bear on.

Ideally use the radar and click or tab targeting to target an armor target with long rage pop up guided missile attack. Ideally beyond the range of the armored unit.

If you need to make a direct attack then choose a masked ingress and egress and minimise time over the target. Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) while in ingress and egress is also needed.

SEAD can be very complex including HE, anti armor, and fire in the form of WP that also performs the function of providing smoke. All of which force armor to button up reducing the enemies situational awareness and fire capabilities. Smoke both marks the target and obscures the vision needed for non radar controlled weapons. Other weapons firing on a target increases the number of threats it must assess as well as the disruption and shock suppression they supply.

The idea that a helicopter is some kind of god that wonders invulnerable around the battlefield is frankly ill informed.

A helicopter is an asset like any other it has vulnerabilities weaknesses and strengths. The strongest warrior on the field can be laid low by a child with a slingshot.

    Kind Regards walker

I do agree with you absolutely.

I'm not the military neither have I worked in military. I'm just a kind of fan of everything flyable and helicopters in particular. I have bought and read several books written by Vietnam veteran pilots of Loaches, Cobras and Hueys, I have spoken to several real world military pilots flying Mi-24 and some jets too just to learn how to fight with the helicopter. And, everything I have learned was that the most essencial condition to survive as helicopter pilot was these two things:

    1. The damn good luck
    2. The perfect flying skills and tactic

Here are few examples what to do, if you want to be shut down flying helicopter in real life. Please, compare it to your flying in ARMA 2:

    • Fly low and slow
    • Expose yourself to enemy fire (even small firearms) for more than few seconds while flying below 1000m
    • Fly your attack run stright and narrow to the target in the predictable way being visible long time before you push the trigger
    • After your attack run, make a high and slow turn, being perfect slow and harmless target for a long time
    • Return to the hot zone in predictable way, if possible from the same direction you left it last time.
    • Try to shot down something hovering face-to-face just 100m of the target

One would say he would never fly like this. But, I must say, I see people flying helicopters in ARMA2 in exactly the same way during MP sessions I play every week. I even catch myself sometime doing the same mistakes again and again. And that's it. Any armor and armanent doesn't have any sense or efficiency if you didn't use it properly.

  11. Few questions to developers.

    Question 1

If ArmA2 perform so badly on so many machines with different configuration, how do you expect me to buy the game and get pissed off that I can't play it with proper settings?

    Question 2

If the game performs so bad, for me it looks like you released a game on an engine that isn't finished neither compatible with broad range of specifications that are available on the market these days and that you expect me to do the testing for you. Why was it released before all the tweaking and tuning was done?

    Question 3

I read a lot that the game performs better on Windows XP. How come you released the game that it's not compatible with up to date systems like Windows Vista and 7?

    Question 4

How come the game supports only 2 GB of RAM and is so dependent on processor power?

    Question 5

My system is a XPS M1730 Laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0 GHz + 4 GB RAM + SLI 8700M GT 256 MB (it's 512 MB in SLI) running Windows Vista 64. Will I be able to play the game on medium up to high settings?

    Question 1

    • I don't think ARMA 2 goes so badly. However, it's easy to drop down FPS significantly by wrong graphic settings which might be the most common issue people have.
    • Please, do try ARMA 2 demo which contains the benchmark mission to test your hardware.

    Question 2

    • Real Virtuality 3 is definitely the most advanced engine for a military sim game ever made. It's being constantly developed and enhanced for last 10 years.
    • Learn more about Real Virtuality 3.

    Question 3

    Question 4

    Question 5

    • Most probably the limit of your computer is the processor. I recomend at least core 2 duo 3ghz and GF8800 for fluent gameplay on standard settings.

  12. Buy them from Sprocket, much better share goes to the developer ;)

Many thanks to all for your enthusiasm and for the kind words written. You don't have to be afraid of Bohemia Interactive nearest future fortunately as we consider ARMA 2 to be a succesfull game.

However, if you really want to support us by extra money, we won't refuse! Just buy another copy on Sprocket e-shop which is the most direct support to us. Thanks in advance!

    ;)

  13. Hi everyone, the dedicated server exe will be relased later today hopefully. Please, be patient and stay tuned.

And, at last: please, don't blame us for the steam update. As it was mentioned on several places and threads it's a Steam issue. Instead of downloading just the difference data to be replaced inside of your pbo's (normal D/L update does this exactly), Steam users must download the whole pbo's and files affected be the update, which is about 4.3gigs in total.

By the way, we have the response from Steam, that they plan to implement more sophisticated method of updating games to avoid such situations.

  14. Does Gamersgate off you some official auto-update system? If yes you should use it, if no you should use this patch :)

Placebo is right. As far as I know, no other digital download vendor provides automatic updates as Steam does. That is the reason why our update cannot be used for Steam version.

Any other D/L versions bought via digital download can be updated to 1.03 by the patch published on ARMA2 website.
