    Eta on general patch

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (placebo @ June 19 2002,01:57)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">3 do you mean you can spin your head around 360 degrees? I've never had that, I've been able to look to the left, and to the right but never all the way around, this is a contstant thing that always happens for you? Freelook isn't on?<span id='postcolor'> It's not the case when you're gunner or having any other function on the ride, but the passengers can do that all the time. Maybe BIS just thought, 'well they could turn around, but we won't make a special animation for it, so let's just give  them a flexible neck while in the truck...' Lazy bastards those guys, eh? I don't mind that happening, as it isn't possible when you're fullfilling any function aboard or when you're not in a vehicle. At least you can enjoy the scenery better while getting shuttled around.

    Eta on general patch

I'm quite sure there will be a patch officially enabling those without OFPR to play with the new 1.6+ Servers (remember 1.60 is only beta), offering them the enhanced graphics engine and of course bugfixes. That patch will most likely include all the new units from the addon, but probably not the new island (to lure more customers into buying OFPR). That way BIS ensures that all customers (OFP or OFPR) can play on the same mp servers using the same addons, while still keeping an incentive to buy the new addon. Well, of course the above is just a guess, but seems to be reasonable.

    Ofp with 3d glasses

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (ELiTe @ June 17 2002,05:59)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">All I can say is - good thing I didn't install XP... hehehhe!<span id='postcolor'> Well, XP wasn't the problem, at least as far as my system was concerned. The monitor cable would have killed the 3d experience in Win98, too. The 29.42 WHQL driver together with the 28.32 stereo panel worked perfect as soon as the cable was fixed and the card forced into VSync mode. Oh, and the flickering is gone - without me modifying the system any further... I just changed from 1024x768@85Hz to 800x600@100Hz (damn old monitor - you're next! ). Looking good... The only thing is that my ability to snipe with regular weapons at far distances is a bit reduced by the lower resolution, but the 3d experience even makes it fun to fly as a bird in MP. I only needed to adjust stereo separation and convergence to get a good 3d effect and to adjust the sights. Never touched the backplane/screen depth thingy.

    Ofp with 3d glasses

Ok, solved my problems! OFP with 3d glasses rocks!!! This is for Windows XP - never tried it with Win98/ME. I had two major problems getting it up and running: 1. No way the stereo addon would work for me: Solved by installing WHQL driver 29.42 and activating VSYNC with the NVHardPage tool (can be found at www.guru3d.com). Then I installed the StereoPanel 28.32 and setup the 3d stuff. As a result my monitor started page-flipping when in Direct3d mode. Be sure to remove your old detonator completely (DetonatorDestroyer tool helps with cleaning your system) 2. So far so good, but my Revelator IR did not react to the flickering... the driver was working, so I had to asume the glasses were broken (batteries were new). After fiddling and searching around for over a week, I was about to send them back to the dealer. But today I found the following information on guru3d: </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">If your monitor supports DDC, the signal that triggers the Revelator gets disrupted. Therefore you have to remove the pins 12 and 15 from your vga cable (not the Y-cable that comes with your glasses).<span id='postcolor'> I did that - et voila, suddenly it worked! Of course you should get second cable to try that - and you should be sure that you tried everything else before. Now I'll try to disable ACPI - should get rid of the flickering that still plagues my system... A happy gamer again!

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (Jason-Alaska @ June 12 2002,00:37)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I was running at 1280x960/32bit before I got the glasses. But due to refresh rates I went to 1024x768/32bit at 100Hz. You will never notice the differance in resolution because seeing everything in 3D makes it look so much better anyway. <span id='postcolor'> Sounds good - now if I only would get it to work properly. I get the stereodriver to show the seperate images, but somehow the shutter glasses won't work. I got the IR version, and yes the glasses have fresh batteries. I'm using the 23.11 NVidia detonator and the official 23.11 NVidia stereo driver. The 28.32 stereo driver was a bit instable, but I'm not sure what caused this (maybe a problem with my localization of Windows - also I recognized one of the stereo drivers to be version 4...2832 instead of version 6...2832). As I use Win XP, I couldn't get the Elsa driver installed, but as I understood, it can be replaced by the nvidia stereo driver, right? Or do I need the extra Elsa driver, too - and if so, where can I find a driver that works with Win XP? I don't want to install Win 98 just to play OFP in 3d... No reason to go back to the dark ages.

    Ofp with 3d glasses

Ok, I'll just get my Elsa 3d glasses this afternoon (as the company went broke those are real cheap now ). I got a NVidia GF2 Ti, so they should work fine with my system (Detonator 29.42). What resolution/refresh rate do you recomend? At the moment I'm playing at 1280x960/32bit, but the monitor isn't good enough to have that resoltution at >100Hz, so I'll have to reduce it, right? What refresh rate do you consider an acceptable minimum for using the glasses? Oh, something completely unrelated: how can I activate anistrophic filtering with the new Nvidia drivers (29.42)?

How big is your addon folder?

249MB - the most important islands, all the "real" addons (e.g. Ash's stuff), some of UCE's units plus some nice extras like the hawk, the lynx and the bunkers. 1.31 GB of campaigns, units, demos 'n stuff in another folder.

    Lose connection

Once I get a "no message received for .. seconds" message in 1.60 I can always be sure that I'll loose the connection. In DirectPlay (1.46 and earlier) I only get disconnected when the connection is really, really bad (like connecting from Europe to US servers during "rush hour"). Usually the connection gets reestablished and I can continue without any problems. In 1.60 I always loose the connection after a desync happens, while in 1.46 the connection gets reestablished and I can continue to play! Therefore I think the problem is the netcode and not the connection, even if DSL with PPPoE might have some flaws on its own. Connection: DSL with PPPoE (768/128), established by a SMC broadband router, not by the computer (XP Professional, connected to router by 100Mbit lan).

    Server commands

One example: I have witnessed several times (with 1.46, but in 1.60 ping also varies a lot) that ping rose from 200-250 ms to 500+ when connected to my favourite US server from Europe, only to drop back to 200 ms after a few seconds... Ping limit on that server is 350 ms. Had this server such an autokick option, I would have been kicked sometimes. Due to the short time the bad ping persisted I didn't disturb the game much. Loosing a player would have been a bad thing for all other players (this was COOP, but same applies to teams in CTF or TDM). The admin could have kicked me anytime of course, but he waited for some time and saw that my ping soon was back to normal - also if my ping had stayed that bad, I would have disconnected myself. Thats the big advantage of an admin compared to an automated ping limit. To have a ping limit is fine with me. But to enforce it automatically is plain stupid. What the f... do we have admins for?

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (WKK Gimbal @ May 31 2002,15:58)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">why is it actually called the black forrest? does no light penetrate the leafs?<span id='postcolor'> It's a name dating back to roman times. The Black forest is a small mountain range stretching over 100km along eastern side of the valley of the river Rhine. When the roman troops passed through the valley over 2000 years ago there was only dense forest without settlements or roads crossing it. So there was this dark, impenetrable forest - and the romans weren't very creative in naming it. The name stuck and is the same in almost any language (Nigra Sylva = Schwarzwald = Selva Negra = Black Forest = Foret Noir = ...). Today you could guess the name came from all the conifers (mostly fir), but in those ancient times it was mostly beach and other deciduous species growing there. Also times have changed and the Black forest is densly populated with many small towns and villages. Typical landscape is a mixture of open land for pasture and dense forest plantations. Highest elevation is about 1500m (Feldberg, just 30 Minutes by car from my city), and in winter you can go skiing there (although the Alps are also only two hours away by car) and in summer its perfect for biking and trekking. Did I mention that we are the city with the highest temperatures in Germany, have very good wine and have many lakes for swimming in the valley of the river Rhine? Hey, what should I say, I like it here.

Another suggestion: It would be really nice to be able to see what players are on a server. I know Gamespy and ASE support this, and as you are using Gamespy for the internal browser, it would be nice to implement this option, too. It's the main reason, why I think I'll continue to use ASE instead of the ingame browser to select which game to join.

( after 2,5 hours )<span id='postcolor'> ok, thanks for the info... It was just the same situation as with the crashes under 1.59. But maybe it was linked to another thing: Pings in OFP vary a lot, while a dos ping running in parallel gives me a very stable (and lower) ping. Maybe the desyncs have to do with this... Edit: I should add, that the desync comes very unexpected - no desync before and then suddenly the connection is lost. Maybe Sockets still can't handle a short desync correctly, and therefore the session is lost instead of resumed?

    1.60 bugs and crashes

Well, I downloaded the client and played a few games (or better tried to). While the servers seem to be more stable than the old 1.59, there are still some things that are not right: * Players initialising half buried in the ground, unable to move or participate in the game. They face the ground from very near. Had this happen to me with 1.55 or 1.58, and today it happend twice to other players (once with 1.59 and once with 1.60). We played different maps, so I think it's an error in the initialisation of the player at startup. * Ghost on player list - the "ghost" didn't stop us from playing and didn't show on the playerlists of the other players (they entered the server after me, while i was already on the server when that player went ghost). So maybe it's just the client not removing the entry from the list. The ghost had a constant ping rate of 211 - the last ping the actual player might have had. * Server still crashes. We were playing a coop map ("Born to die") on Kip Kilagan's server and the game went well. We were playing for about 10 Minutes, returned to the lobby to pickup more players (we were 5 players) and then started again. After 10 Minutes more gameplay suddenly I got desynced (ping <100, no desyncs before). Looks like the server crashed or threw us out. Edit: No crash: Its just desyncs, server is continuing, and so are the other players... * oh, and you should make the installation programm overwrite the old entries in the MP test directory. All these players logging in with the "modified config file" message, thats annoying and might contribute to the instability of the servers. Finally something I'm missing in the gamebrowser: access to the list of players on a server. What I really like when using ASE is checking my buddy list to see if there's one of the people online I really like to play with. Maybe this could be integrated into the server browser??? Of course the lack of it isn't a bug, but I guess now it still might be possible to integrate this feature...
