    Weird terrain effect

I think I will do a simplistic sat map, so we can see what this is like.

    Weird terrain effect

This one is at 2048x2048 with a cell size of 50 meters. I think I found where Las Vegas is supposed to go. I should probably remove the water.

    Weird terrain effect

Probably what happened, was when I reduced the terrain cell size, it kept the mountain height. If I increase it to the normal size, it should fix it. but some people might object to a map that is 250 000 square kilometers in size. take into consideration though, that this is southern nevada, by las vegas. I did an update, here are the same mountains: and here are some mountains from the same region. http://cache.viewimages.com/xc....B4DC33E

    Weird terrain effect

too much noise. :/ in this case, no other way than use a blur... carefully. i'm still trying several combinaison of heightmap resolution , bluryness etc ... , but it seem that a gaussian blur @ 2 pixel radius seem good ps: have you patch the DEM for missing information holes ? EDIT: The Gaussian blur fixed it, thanks Here is a very small potion of the map. (Nevada Desert)
  6. Just wanted to show off my new heightmap.. Hopefully I can get visitor working. I believe this is 250 000 kilometers (2) of the Nevada desert, which I think includes Las Vegas and the Colorado river. It is also resized to a resolution of 2048x2048 (it was 6000 or something before), so I shouldn't have any jaggy terrain.
  7. I just figured out a way to do it today, so I figured I would share it with other people. I am not totally sure if this is the correct way to do and If I am doing something fatally wrong, please let me know What you need: Wilbur http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/software.html 3DEM http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem.html Google Earth (optional) It is for measuring your island, to see the actual size. Use the ruler tool. Visitor 3 (no shit) Also, you will need to bookmark this website. http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp Alternatively, you may use Opteryx's method of obtaining data. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....t=71399 ---------------------------------------------------------- O.K. Go to that URL I gave you, and on the grid, select the area that you want to replicate, preferably an island somewhere. They are fast downloads, and they are islands, so it makes a good map. I am sure there are plenty of them, so there is no hurry. After you select the grid area, hit search, it should bring up an enlarged picture of the area you have just selected. Say download (http). Once your download has finished, extract the .TIF file to somewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------- Now, fire up 3DEM, and it will prompt you with what file type you want. Select "GeoTiff DEM(.tif)" and find the file you have just extracted. Now open it. First thing you should do is go to "operation - resize overhead view" Adjust the bar until you are at 2056, that is an appropriate size. It will load for a second, and then you will have an enlarged image, You will notice there is a box, that looks like it has a slice taken out of it. if you click and hold the corner of the box, you can enlarge it. Here is my 3DEM island. Enlarge and drag it around the island(s), make sure it is as straight as you can, too. Now that you have the box around the area you want to keep, go up to "file - SaveTerragen terrain" and click on "selected area" Give it a name, and save it somewhere that you can find later. ---------------------------------------------------------- Now fire up Wilbur.exe Say "file- open", set the file type to terragen file, and then open the file you saved in 3DEM. You may notice that the height map may have weird blocks on it, iif it does, use the blur tool to flatten them into the rest of the terrain. Save the file as a PNG. Go in visitor, and do your stuff with the PNG image. I have noticed since you cannot resize the resolution, the edges of the islands will be a bit rough, but it is a small price to pay for Incredibly realistic terrain. Anyways, I hope this helps, in case you didn't know how to do this.
  8. I can' really help you guys when it comes to the mechanics of visitor. I am still very new to it, and have had next to no practice.

Any modern space combat flight sims around?

No... Saying a game is done with procedural programming is a very vague term. That is like saying your game is done in C++, it doesn't tell you anything about the game. they even mentioned the game engine uses terragen technology (I really can't be bothered to hunt down the post) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF1CIF74iZA If you ask me, i see endless similarities. but look at the terrain, the terrain looks like terragen, it renders like terragen, it is textured like terragen. Besides, using terragen and seeing how fast it produces large height maps, I can see the infinity engine simply generating a full world in a matter of seconds, then storing the info, for further use.

    Jonny´s Marines

You should check in with the Operation Northstar guys, and do their texturing for the troop models they made.

Any modern space combat flight sims around?

Well, if game would be released, everything would be crap in comparison. As it seems it would be not so much of RTS but highly tactical game, as its predecessor. Watch it and drool, sadly that's all you can do regarding this game I cannot see that one being as good as infinity. Infinity is not an RTS, it is an MMO(not RPG). It works like a first person to third person game, and it works more like an FPS than an RPG, but you play with thousands of players at once. Plus you can own your own planet if you want, that has good terrain, all done with terragen.

Any modern space combat flight sims around?

There is infinity: Quest for the universe. You can pretty much say goodbye to all other video games after that comes out. Everything will be crap in comparison. http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/ This is pretty much all the videos they have released. http://www.youtube.com/user/InfinitySupport

USA vs SLA conflict real life

As much as I hate to say it, the US would really kick the crap out of the Sahranians. And despite what you say, there would be no guerrilla war, the population is too small, and it would only take a matter of hours to find all of the guerrilla camps.
  15. Some of you might have read my thread about my last problem, where the "shaders are not valid" I fixed that one by reinstalling my BI tools. Now I am having this problem, bulldozer comes up, and sits there at a loading screen that says: "wait for host" The loading bar goes up, and then back down. Over and over. Does anybody know how to fix this?

    Problem: bulldozer, "wait for host"

I just re-installed arma (with the new retail copy), I started a new map, did not import anything, and said run bulldozer, and that is when I get the problem. I didn't used to get that problem.

    Vietnam: The Experience

Well then, to most who know, it didn't even feel real. It just felt like a badly optimized BF1942 mod, with normal maps. I've seen better and worked on better. BF:V truly sucked in all views. I love arma, but there is such a huge battlefield stigma from most arma players. The battlefield series was great. All of them. Get over yourself. Playing arma doesn't make you a genius. The average age of a soldier in vietnam was 18. Think about what a war run by 18 year olds from the 60's is like.

    Problem: bulldozer, "wait for host"

I am relatively new to the whole armed assault engine and I have to say: When you guys say a one word phrase like that, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

    Survival

I guess I could continue, but nobody answered my question in the the arma editing forums, asking how to make triggered NPC spawns and triggered NPC removal. Until I get an answer, I can not continue.

    Problem: bulldozer, "wait for host"

I am not sure what that is. So probably not.

    Vietnam: The Experience

You must be some kind of genius, figuring that out all on your own You see, the key word in my last post was "felt." Felt is the past tense of "feel" so, when I used it the way i did, it means it feels real, not is real. But what a creative joke, you should be a comedian.

Frame rate hit caused by jungle

I do believe you have to do it yourself, but you can use that mod, and when you go into the editor, go find a building with an interior (with preview mission mode) and then use your cursor (in editor mode) to find the name of the building by putting your mouse over it.
  23. hypno toad

    Finally

Satellite and terrain matching should not be too difficult, and if you are off slightly, it shouldn't be a huge problem. Besides, you can always make a satellite image yourself, it doesn't take very long to make one with relatively minimal skills in photoshop.
  24. hypno toad

Frame rate hit caused by jungle

Not to use them, to see what you are using. It is hard to tell what you are using when the names are in Czechoslovakian (or something like that) So, in the editor, you can find out what the name is of the building you want, and place it in visitor. unless there is some way to see what you are highlighting.

Frame rate hit caused by jungle

Phaeden, these are great ideas, but I have not the foggiest idea on how to do it Absolutely no experience in modeling, unfortunately. Would be useful, especially as I would like to have some industrial type buildings for my next map. But there is only so much time... You should go through some of the building models in the arma editor with this mod: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=392 You would surprised at how many completed building models were never actually used in arma. There is one model, that is a 2 floor factory, with some sort of offloading ramp that comes out the side that you could use for your industrial building. EDIT: I am downloading the alpha map, you should probably use a website like filefront, the one you picked was pretty freaking slow.
