  1. This business of releasing 'HD upgrades' months after release is really rather tedious.

I know some people will go back and play the whole game over again just to 'experience' the upgrade, but I am not one of those people.

The story and immersion of W3 are excellent but the combat and movement are infuriatingly unintuitive and I wouldn't want to go through that again, regardless of how much better it may look.

    **EDIT**

    Apparently, 980 TI now ~$800USD and R390X ~$599.00, JFYI

  2. Fact is nothing is going to change, droves of people will buy it either because they saw their favorite youtuber playing it, they genuinely want to play it, or they just want to throw money around for some reason. The internet is full of people to take advantage of, companies and common folk know this alike, just look at some of the things people spend money on or send money for, you can make just about anything. A phone app that literally does nothing, flappy bird, certain life mods, people that buy content for the sake of having it regardless of where it came from, people that will buy a game simply because the devs were of the same nation even if it is a blatant ripoff and horrid one at that. People give people money for unboxing videos, or hell even opening kits.

I know this sounds more like a youtube rant than a video game rant but after seeing these things I've come to realise, its all fruitless, people will throw money at anything these days and even defend it, people talk big about ethics and business practices but then go out and buy the things that they said they hate, they talk about boycotting and then buy and play the game without a thought, people will buy games just because their friends have them.

Even when some of the most watched people online say "Hey guys this is bad, don't buy it" what happens? Bought in droves, if bad is the new good then how can anything fail? Hell just look at steam green light and all of the literal junk people buy from there.

  3. Im going to pick answer #3 -- "Gaming laptops are good for gaming.".

But really, it all come's down to specs --and in arma cpu power trumps all.

Nobody's gonna say a guy's 4.2Ghz laptop ain't gonna run arma. --overheating is not in the metric.

I also got to clean the cat-hair off my cpu's heatsink 4-5 times a year ..., just part of being a gamer..., with cats.

This thread is for guys wondering if their 'puter will run this game. It's not for gamers with monster gear --unless they just wanna dangle their thing.

I think you've missed the point, it isn't an epeen thing, it's just a simple case of facts vs FUD.

Obviously, a $500.00 bestbuy laptop with integrated graphics will not fair well in most modern games but you certainly do not have to spend 4K to play games on a laptop, as I have pointed out twice now, my original example was extreme and again, in response to a blanket statement that has absolutely no basis in fact.

Nobody's gonna say a guy's 4.2Ghz laptop ain't gonna run arma. --overheating is not in the metric.

and JFYI, that's exactly what he said, unequivocally:

this is a laptop? am i right? laptops are NOT for gaming. and thats all.

Again, it's got nothing to do with 'dangling one's thing'; as you correctly said, people come here for info and what he is alleging is categorically wrong.

There are gaming laptops that run from ~$1000.00 (and up) that will handle today's games at varying levels of detail/resolution with absolutely no problem, it's a fact, not a debate.

  4. Most guys don't come here with their $4,000 dollar gaming laptop:

    http://www.ncix.com/detail/msi-gt80-titan-sli-i7-cf-105242.htm

The cooling solution for my desktop is a 14" fan blowing into the case....

Like I said, I used an extreme example, there are plenty of affordable examples that work just as well.

    http://www.ncix.com/detail/msi-gt70-dominator-i7-4710mq-53-102703-1611.htm

You can side with the guy who claims 'laptops are not for gaming' but you'll be just as wrong as he is ;)

As an aside, I'm running 3 GTX 980s (on air) and a 5960X and I don't need a 14" fan blowing into my case, even when it's warm.

  5. the refrigeration of any laptop is a shit. And in my opinion this is one of the most important things in a computer.

Try playing 4 or 5 ours Wasteland in ArmA3and then take a look to the temperature of the proccesor.

Listen, you don't know what you're talking about, do some research before you spout anymore FUD.

There was a time when laptops were not a good choice for gaming, that time is long past.

Gaming laptops from Alienware, MSI, ASUS etc have very effective integrated cooling (even with tandem GPUs).

They are designed for high end gaming over long periods of time.

  6. this is a laptop? am i right? laptops are NOT for gaming. and thats all.

ROFLMFAO, I haven't been here for a while but the level of cluelessness is at an all time high.

Please professor, explain to me how this laptop is 'not for gaming':

    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT80-2QE-Titan-SLI.html#hero-overview

    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT80-2QE-Titan-SLI.html#hero-specification

(Yes, it is an extreme example, but there are plenty of more affordable gaming laptops that are very capable of running any game you throw at them).

The desktop remains the ultimate at the enthusiast level but to say that 'laptops are not for gaming' is pure FUD, do some research :)

PS: Dieter01's post clearly stated that he had an 'Alienware' laptop. By definition, Alienware laptops are gaming laptops JFYI.

  7. "Promo it -and they will buy...."

Seems to be the motto of every contemporary awaited AAA title these days. The above lets me know that this (yet again) will be a flashy looking game with very little substance that I would play for less than 3 days. Just about every major release in the past couple of years has a huge awaitment factor followed by massive disappointment or worse apathy with the horde just shrugging and running off after the next big promising.

How inspired can the SP campaign be when it's literally shoved down the programmers throats who don't even want to do it?! How creative and pushing of the envelope will the AI be?

"Destructable environments?! Hell no desync will be a nightmare and we might not get our 10/10 Gamespot score!!!"

AAA titles no longer have the capability of producing breathroughs of any kind in any category whatsoever. "They have 100x $ than _x developer! They could kick their ass in AI, physics or any category if they really wanted!". Yeah right, just like Miley Cyrus has more bank than 1000 creative muscians put together therefore has 1000 times the potential talent 'if she really wanted to..'

Know this is kind of a rant but it's just depressing to see formerly great producers that I grew with like EA (Seven Cities of Gold, Bird Vs Johnson, Adventure Construction Set... et al) degrading themselves like this. Imagine if one of these titles actually added a few sim elements rather than BF guys dressed up like Star Wars guys? Exactly why I'd back 10 star citizens over this tripe -at least they're going for it or bust balls be damned.

I want to get excited about this but you said it (and Jim Sterling said it as well), EA will cut this up and sell it to us piece by DLC piece.

    Want Space Combat? CHa CHING

Want a gold X-Wing CHa CHING

Want a rubber Ewok cock? CHa CHING

The 'whole' game will end up costing $150.00 (like Hardline) with the ubiquitous 'Season pass', 'Premium Edition' and 'Pre Order Bonuses'.

This whole industry needs a goddamned enema :(

    /rant off

  8. You are probably right but I rather bury my head in the sand in this case and hope everything is going to be perfectly fine.

I hope the PC version is awesome, I really enjoyed the PS4 version.

Unfortunately, I still think these delays are financially motivated, but as always, time will tell ;)

  9. Problem is, the reasons they are holding it back have very little to do with a better PC experience.

They pulled the same horsesh!t with GTA4 and that was a shambolic release on PC.

The sad truth is that they are holding out until 'next gen' console sales of GTAV fall below a certain level and to a lesser extent due to the release of the 'Heists' DLC which will promote the sale of the console versions further.

If it releases on PC in a near perfect state, I might be inclined to change my opinion, but based on the available facts and R*'s previous behavior concerning GTA4, I'm not holding my breath.

  10. SOE is a bullshit company captained by a bullshit artist who is also 'The enemy of all gamers', John Smedley.

They tried to monetize SWG (after wrecking it in several other ways, CU and ultimately NGE) with the TCG (Trading card game) - essentially unregulated gambling.

They also destroyed Vanguard and ultimately introduced chests that you had to pay real money to unlock (again, unregulated gambling).

Now this fucking travesty that is blatantly P2W and was also blatantly marketed to the public as anything but.

Make no mistake, they offered refunds because they were legally obliged to. Steam does not refund easily (if ever) and that may change in the EU as it is being challenged by consumer groups, but here in North America, once you hit 'Buy now', short of there being some massive game breaking fault or outright lying (as in the case of H1Z1), you aren't getting your money back.

As for the shop being polished, I can only restate that the same things went on with Vanguard and SWG, constant updates for their gambling mechanisms while bugs that had been around for years (despite being constantly reported and re-reported) were never fixed.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this train wreck of a company and the horseshit double speak that spews forth from Smedley.

I guess SOE won't fire him because he generates income (no matter how nefarious the manner in which he does it) but he has done no end of damage to the SOE brand and H1Z1 has certainly done nothing to diminish that.

    /rant off ;)

    **EDIT**

It's as if Sony heard me ;)

    http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/sony_sells_sony_online_entertainment.html

  11. I am usually a very strong proponent of Braben and ED but the decision to make the game 'online only' does not sit well with me.

I know they are offering refunds etc but when devs 'pull the rug out' it does not bode well for the future.

Hopefully they can successfully perform 'damage control' in this situation and get back on track.

  12. If that thing is successfull (and sadly there are enough idiots who will gladly throw their money at them) then they might focus on more of that. It would also relieve them of many problems they have, like making a decent AI...

On a related note. Attlia will have Day1 DLC. The Three Viking factions will be locked behind it. That Game just turned into a no-buy.

Like many of you, I would like to see the Medieval setting but:

Yep, f*ck CA and mother*ck 'Day One DLC', corrosive and disgusting tactic born of endless avarice by people who don't give a sh*t about gaming.

After Rome: Total Fiasco, the only way I would buy Atilla is if the reviews are out of the park.

Preordering was over for me a few months ago, there is no way I am supporting these greedy douchebags anymore.

I get more value for money out of games like Insurgency and The Lone dark that cost me under $20.00 and where strategy is concerned you can't go wrong with Civ as Sid Meier has retained his integrity for a very long time.

  13. He (Spacey) appears in the game (a lot) but not in the Exo suit.

I like Mack's reviews for the most part, but it irks me that he plays CoD expecting something that CoD never was (and I suspect never will be).

I treat CoD like I treat 24, a mindless, yet entertaining waste of time.

That way, I'm never disappointed ;)

After 11 years experience of Warfare shooters and the largest game budget on the planet coupled with the amazing tech they have available would you not think that Activision could commission an amazing open world FPS wargame that allows the player to get immersed in a campaign with huge scenarios, open ended missions, tactical options that can change on the battlefield when the player decides, vehicles that the player can drive, full coop and no Kevin fucking Spacey. No, instead we get this bullshit shovelled down our throats yet again.

Having these sorts of ludacris expectations where CoD is concerned is simply setting yourself up for a major disappointment.

And furthermore, if you know you don't like the type of game that CoD is, avoid it as opposed to spending money on it and by mission of action getting really angry when it turns out to be exactly what you expected it to be.

  14. Getting shot out of nowhere after a kilometer long run was just as frustrating in OFP. It taught you to be cautious nonetheless. Alien Isolation save system does the same.

In the older Rainbow Six games you couldnt save during a mission at all, and a single killed hostage (which happened quite often in RS3) meant game over. No one complained about it back then.

    QFT.

'Instant grat' rules now, real shame imho.

Nice to see the Alien Devs going with the 'old school' system.

I'm enjoying the hell out of Alien: Isolation.

Along with a handful of others, one of the best games I have played in a long time.

  15. The forced learning is a good thing imho, It encourages you to plan and to implement strategies.

It can be laborious, but by the same token, it makes the whole experience more involving.

I love exploring and I love the fact that this game is very focused on exploration and evasion.

I also like the fact that there is no option to 'run and gun', that approach will only lead to your demise.

There are a few things I don't like, like not being able to pick up NPC guns for example, that was a very stupid design decision and it did (briefly) spoil my immersion.

  16. Love it, save system and all.

Taking it out will ruin the game and allow people to charge through it with no need to plan.

That's what makes the game so much fun and the sense of peril so immediate, wrong moves have consequences, sometimes very serious ones.

I've spent 20 minutes in a closet monitoring the tracker as the Alien searches the area - fucking tense.

I do understand the frustration, especially if you have limited time to play, but I suspect this was done on purpose.

No doubt they will implement a different save system due to all the whining but I hope it is implemented as a choice rather than replacing the current one because some people actually like it.

This game absolutely and completely nails the feeling of the Alien film. It's clear the devs researched every detail from visual style to sound.

  17. So given that RAM speed seems to make a difference for ArmA 3, has anyone upgraded to Haswell-E and tried DDR4 yet? I'm curious if it makes a significant difference.

Yah I'm on the 5960X with Tri SLI 980s.

ArmA 3 feels a little better, but is still limited in the usual places.

In other games and apps, it's a beast.

I don't think that DDR4 is going to be worth the money just for A3 tbh, if it is making a difference, it's not a significant one imo.

The limitations of the engine transcend any amount of serious horsepower you throw at it unfortunately.

I love the X99 chipset, probably one of the best Intel chipsets to date.

  18. That may be, but it's still marketed as an "extreme" processor which means it's targeted toward a good amount of the hardware enthusiast community. In any case, a newer architecture, 8-core CPU should definitely be able to run things faster...however with ArmA we see that's not the case. Even the 5930K version is worse than the previous generation of CPUs in ArmA 3.

You mean Intel is full of sh!t?

Yah, that is true as well.

Check out this pile, straight from the horses ass:

    http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/35774-intel-takes-credit-for-three-way-4k-gaming

As the author points out, it's the 4 GPUs that provide the horsepower, not the CPU ;)
