This demo keeps crashing my entire system after about 2 minutes of play. I'm playing and poof! Some artifacts on the cursor, then the screen is black.

Is it just me, or are they going a little overboard with the grass?
I really like this pic. In real life, the brush (bushes+tall grass) really does get that thick, just in my hometown too. Who knows how it could get in a tropical environment. This is the first game I've seen that actually has such realistically thick brush!

I can never get torrents to work. Am I doing something wrong? They always seem to download at pathetically slow rates (2 kb/sec...3 days for download). Is there something I need to do...?

I don't like the russian cover at all...I prefer the other BIS one.
The Russian one screams "THIS IS A CRAPPY BUDGET GAME WITH 80s STYLE COMMANDO CARTOON ARTWORK ON THE FRONT"
...even though it isn't.
If I saw that on the shelves of my local gamestore, I would probably think it was some bargain-bin low-budget crappy attempt at copying BF2.

I hope it is on steam, personally. There was actually a bit of interest in the steampowered forums about this game, from CS players!

This picture is so ugly, it reminds me the early backdays of duke nukem 3D mid 90's.No streetlightshadow anno 2007? This is just worse. Is this realy the work of an award winner?
I thought the same thing. I know I also ranted earlier to make night a tad brighter for the purpose of gameplay, but seriously...it looks like daytime with a black sky. Not to mention the black and white...ugh.

If anyone has ever seen those paris island TV shows on the military channel here in the U.S., part of the training is swimming with full combat gear on. to pass the training, you had to swim from one end of the swimming pool to the other-it looked incredibly difficult. The poor marine cadets were pretty much floundering on their backs swimming at a very slow rate. And they were trained! At best, they could probably get to shore if their landing craft was somehow destroyed 40 ft offshore.
An average soldier probably couldn't swim based on that tv show. However, that being said, pilots can swim fairly easily (during an air force cadet training camp I went to, the instructors easily swam with full pilot gear on).

Wow...was playing the new version, and the new map "Snake Plain" Reminded me a lot of operation flashpoint multiplayer.
Flashpoint players will really like this map. It is a co-op map with AI! Basically you just start on a huge terrain with two hummers and you have to assault this enemy camp and destroy some objectives. It is very open-ended, and there are enemy tanks and vehicles that deploy troops and such even!
I was pleasantly surprised with that mission. I hope we will see more AA maps head that direction in the future.

WOW! Cannot wait to see U.S. Troops in BDU and ALICE gear and tanks rolling across Europe in the cold war. Looking forward to this, good luck to you guys

These new videos have confirmed my worst fears.
Arma has been severly dumbed down as far as realism goes.
There is no more fatigue modeled in the game.
There is still super recoil.
I guess we were right to be scared when they made it "mainstream" because right now the mechanics are probably on a CS level.
The two players in the mission killed probably like 2 platoons of soldiers. Thats like something you find in a james bond or medal of honor game.
The AI runs around like it is completely retarded. I think I saw the AI fire back at the player only a couple of times in the video. Other times they just ran back and forth in front of the player instead of getting in cover and shooting them.
It still seems the same as OFP...only worse.
Right now I am questioning whether or not to actually buy the game.
But the music was pretty good.

The problem with OFP is that you are easily able to sustain rapid fire on a target without actually having to readjust the sights. From real life experience with 5.56 ammo I need to readjust the sights to target after about 4-5 rapid shots in single fire on medium distance (100-150m) otherwise it would have shiftet too much off my initial aiming point.I'm not saying the weapons have big recoil but they have some recoil and you need to control that. Of course it feels like nothing when you shot larger caliber first but you still need to do something about the recoil.
Of course there are very good shooters around that can handle the recoil nearly perfectly but as I see it OFP is not an elite soldier sim. And there are many professional soldiers that aren't very good shooters - not to mention the quality of the sahrani troops. But from what I've seen there is no realistic recoil simulation ingame and much of the recoil system that OFP has is easily modable so It's not really a major problem to adjust it to my taste. I just don't feel anything like shooting a real rifle when shooting in OFP (and presumeably also in arma).
EDIT:
to prevent confusion. with "rapid fire" I mean single fire in rapid progression. In German we call it "rasches Einzelfeuer"
This is what I am worried about too. Single shot recoil is fine, but the ability to fire 30 rounds in full auto without deviating from your initial aiming point is unrealistic, and was something that annoyed the hell out of me how recoil was pretty much nonexistant in ofp.
You could just point the cross hair and hold it down it looks like. That is less realistic than CS! CS doesn't even have that! We are talking like quake-level here! What kind of simulation is that?
Another thing that worries me is the ironsights seem completely still. Is there still a fatigue model in the game? The player was just running around when he aimed is rifle-and it was still completely still.
With the way its going, Armed Assault infantry mechanics seem more llike CS than a simulation.

There are clear blue skies, yet it looksl like its overcast. This really disappoints me, and frankly looks like crap.Depends where Sahrani lies geographically and the time of year. Clear skies in Florida in Summer would be very bright, but clear blue skies in England in Winter would look even more washed-out.
True, but I was under the impression that Sahrani must be somewhat near the equator considering the southern part is tropical, and thus would have some fairly bright sunshine.

I think some people need to lighten up.

seems like just another cheezy unhistoric 'american soldiers are real heroes' war movie
, maybe, and hopefully, ill be proved wrong.See my post. ^

I like this movie because it shows the japanese point of view also. I'm going to see it.

An env map probably couldn't make for a good scope view - it is merely a simulated, low-resolution reflection technique.
EDIT: To explain what I mean, look at this half life 2 screenshot.
WARNING: Acquired through google search. This picture is totally random.
http://img219.exs.cx/img219/2318/capture0723ar.jpg
Look at the scope on the crossbow and how it reflects the room. I think arma is using the same technique.
This is not to say however that all because the first person view scope reflects the area in arma doesn't mean it could have RO-style scopes. It would just be pointlessly resource-draining to have it in first person view like that.
-
I think its just an envmap

-
I see nothing...I'll quote myself from another thread.
Quote[/b] ]I highly doubt this.
It looks just like an envmap to me. That's all. So it reflects the general color of the area, but nothing more.
Unless maybe I misunderstand what you are saying?
-
did you guys notice? its awsome!
i saw from one of the recent german movies (gc-commov (65mb)) and i could notice the changing of the color while he points to road and to white marks in road.. as if we could see it in the scope while 1st person view!
i really liked it!
IM PREATY SURE!
I saw things (as colors, objects) trough the scope! while 1st person vieW!(not V view)
check at the end of the movie!

ps- sorry for my entusiasm
I highly doubt this.

Indeed, I have a pair of BDUs that is 20+ years old, and is very faded. The brown, however, resembles more of a washed out orange-it could still turn into purple I suppose.
However, if you look in Iraq even though some of those guys have seen heavy combat there interceptors maintain decent coloration.
I also highly doubt interceptor armor would be so worn considering how interceptor armor is relatively new. Also, I may be wrong but the woodland covering for interceptor armor is a different material than that of rip-stock woodland BDU, and would probably fade less.
Also, if it was so worn it would have signifcant desaturation and wear on the armor. The armor on BIS's texture has no real visible dirt or worn down areas, it looks like discolored yet brand new armor.
-
Speaking of the soldier model...
Now I know this is EXTREME nitpicking, but the soldiers woodland vest color really wrong.
The reason I bring this up is because for some reason the purpleish woodland vest annoys the heck out me. Now, this is a simple modfix, right?
However, usually the problem with custom skins is you get accused of cheating because custom or brightly-colored skins are what is used for aimbots in multiplayer.
But anyway, this is extremely rough but it shows what it should be-and is nothing more than a 5 minute photoshop job.

Yes, but if a high-powered light is shining upon it, it usually tends to be its normal color.

[ig]http://www.pcgames.de/screenshots/medium/1156442379976.jpg[/img]observe: here are the two different style sleves in the same shot. What's that all about?
Some one asked "why are there army and navy units mixed together?" (marine cobra is in the game aswell as other army things). My theory is that the army call the speedy responce of the marines. One of the gus in this image is navy, one army. Notice how the guys at the back does not have the bull symbol on his arm. Whats your thoughs on that?

Maybe im totally wrong.
I think many of you are really looking too far into this
...one guy thought it was reallly hot out so he rolled up his sleeves, and the other guy was to lazy to do so. Also, only army wears ACU.Quote[/b] ]the only picture in nighttime is this one. Not much a reference huh?
A picture is worth a thousand words. Especially since there is a visible light source (lighthouse) that shines on the terrain...but the terrain is still black-and white. This indicates that the unrealistic light shader is still in. Also, no new lighting effects are visible for nighttime-it looks exactly the same as OFP1. This screenshot looks like a 2001 throwback.
