Americas Army, A Threat Or Rival To Armed Assault?
ebns72 replied to westy159's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
Being a huge fan of AA myself, I certainly would not say that infantry simulation beats the hell out of operation flashpoint in realism as aforementioned. They are actually pretty much the same and very similar in mechanics, I believe actually flashpoint is a tad more realistic. w Based on my experiences with stupid paintball games, operation flashpoint is far more realistic in terms of open field movement and such. when under fire, you don't strafe around and shoot as in AA but rather usually get down into some cover. Also, crouch walking is uncomfortable and annoying as hell, as is running with your weapon up ( the same as in AA) and they usually don't have much use because the enemy is 300 feet away. So IMO opflash simulates the movement of a you, a person, much more realistically than AA. Also keep in mind opflash simulates one of the KEY elements in warfare that America's Army doesn't-fatigue. However, for CQB, America's army takes the cake. I've never done anything in paintball or anything in close quarters, but I would assume just by logic that america's army has it fairly accurate in terms of how you engage the enemy and such. For example, in the field environments of opflash, whoever can get the best cover and can move up to flank the enemy usually wins. In america's army, its often who has the best aim and who has the best reflexes to shoot first in close quarters. So one is not more realistic than the other...they are just different simulations of different aspects of infantry warfare as it currently stands. I am really looking forward to the upcoming vehicles and larger maps for AA, and I believe this could compete with Armed Assault, but I think armed assault will still hold the cake because in field warfare it has everything AA has and more. I agree the physics of grenades and such is way better than in ofp, in additon to the medic system. However, this brings me to one thing-mods. The AA medic system has been modded quite nicely into flashpint (try WGL5)...america's army lacks mod which takes huge points away from it as well. Also, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was also supervised by a colonel I believe. And that game is incredibly realistic we all know Bottom line: AA=superior in cqb Flashpoint/Arma=superior in field warfare -
Americas Army, A Threat Or Rival To Armed Assault?

the upcoming patches for AA feature terrain that is VERY wide open and large with several driveable vehicles. IMO, it could be very similar to arma. -
Very impressive trailer. The running anim also seems improved or maybe its just me. I also must comment the music is really well done. I liked the middle eastern flair at the end of the trailer.

I just ran away and dodged their bullets and found the base by dumb luck...I just had an instinct it was in the direction I was going.

Hello, I've run into a few problems in your missions, mostly involving chopper pickup. In "Operation King" I made it to the LZ as the last man alive in the entire operation (to my knowledge). To CH34s came to the LZ. However, then they just hovered above me, but never actually landed. In "Lang Rao" I completed my patrol thankfully with only some fairly light action and no casualities to my squad....great mission btw, the atmosphere of patrolling through the jungle was terrific. However, when I got to LZ november, however, no script or anything was activated...and thus no helicopter came to pick up my squad. It was somewhat anti-climatic after feeling life you've just survived a vietnam patrol. Also, in the same mission, I came across a crate of vietnamese weapons-how would I go about destroying it? I also noticed a strange object next to it, I figured it was probably a mine so I decided not to touch any of the contents inside the crate.

Would it be possible as in GTA to despawn and spawn cars and civilians so the cpu only has to calculate maybe 20 items at a time?

The southern part, where it is desert, maybe it will be somewhat barren. However, in the desert we have still seen plenty of shrubs and presumably most of the southern fighting will take place in urban environments anyway. As for the northern part, however, there should be plenty of cover: http://www.armed-assault-zone.com/images/photoalbum/80.jpg http://www.armed-assault-zone.com/images/photoalbum/101.jpg http://www.armed-assault-zone.com/images/photoalbum/79.jpg

IMO, of all the games that put in your in the boots of a special forces soldier, whenever I played black ops in flashpoint I always really felt like a special forces soldier...just in the depth of the missions the perfect excecution of killing and demolition, and the feeling of really being completely surround behind enemy lines (and still getting away alive with cunning). This is more due to mission design than the unit itself though. I vote to keep them in the way they are.

WOW! I am so impressed with this latest release by unsung. The islands are so great, I really like the dense jungles in highlands...very atmospheric. And the best thing about this mod are finally good, atmospheric vietnam missions. I played the one where you are VC and you must survive for 3 hours...this is SUCH a good mission. It is so simple yet is so free-form in gameplay yet has tons of vietnam atmosphere trying to ambush US troops. I was especially impressed when I ambushed a US patrol, and soon hueys and 5T truck came in the region! I got so scared hearing the sound of the rotorblades flying over, cause i knew they must have a crapload of troops in them. So I fled into the jungle...just the sound of the "flashpoint heavy breathing" while sprinting in the jungle was very nam-ish, especially when you randomly see a flash...and then its already too late .Very well-done. I also played some of the "just a patrol missions"...VERY atmospheric. Just the tension and experience of hopping off the huey, and eerie calm as you walk through the jungle, but it is still very freeform at the same time. It can go from complete silence to absolute hell in seconds. It still howevers captures the flexibility and "do these objectives, doesn't matter how you do them" essence of flashpoint. I later downloaded the Ia Drang map, very cool to see an update of the classic, but I have one major gripe with this map- The jungles!! Although there is plenty of undergrowth, the trees are so lame. There is no jungle canopy! This can be easily fixed by expanding the amount of leaves that come from the tree trunks-instead of making little blue balls on top, enlarge these or replace them with more expansive foliage. I know its a nitpick, but for some reason I get annoyed by this because it seems to really take away from the atmosphere.

Dude..are you like...being sarcastic or something? Seriously. If Arma's graphics are outdated, well then the PC industry is going straight to hell as it tries to swallow much more than it can chew. The graphics may not be on par with Crysis, but thats a way next gen pc game, where as arma is current late gen. Compared to what other games are the graphics outdated? (New games like crysis and UT2007 don't count, simply because these are next-gen running on DX10?). IMO, the game looks even better than half life 2 and the water in the game is jaw-dropping. Animation, ok, they do move very robotically with not-so-good transitions, but its still a massive improvement over the current ofp. And to say arma looks like it could be an addon to ofp without much graphics improved: operation flashpoint: http://www.bistudio.com/pics/games/screen2_hi.jpg Armed assault: http://www.bistudio.com/games/aa/ArmA_hires_01.png Yep....such little improvement...I can barely see a difference!

I don't really like LSR's troops as the specops, simply because they feel out of place when compared to the rest of the HYK and US troops in terms of proportion, quality etc. Perhaps you could release the models for the other woodland specops and I could do a manual config replacement?

I was thinking the same thing...I don't recall any of those buildings being in bf2.
-
lol at the end: "It was a huge mess mess, with several blown kh'ack and sea men flying everywhere."
-
lol cool site. Guys, this is not a thread about 1337 speak, this is a thread about the aforementioned website. http://rinkworks.com/dialect....y880338

I thought the hind is actually classified as a transport helicopter because the warsaw pact...or maybe soviet military doctrine or something prohibited dedicated attack helicopters?
-
Wow..could you do an animation pack? That running anim looks really great in elite and I'm sure it could be used as a base for creating new animations as well.
-
Yes I know...I mean whenever I have run with a weapon, the natural tendency without thinking about anything is to point the weapon down...like you said, you're not really thinking when sprinting, so your arms put the weapon in whatever is natural, which in most cases is downward. Which is why I find it odd he is sprinting with his weapon pointed upward...it looks somewhat silly. Err anyway...unecessary nitpicking/whining on my part...but I thought I might as well bring it up since we're talking about running animation
-
The main thing I don't like about the sprinting animation is the way his weapon is pointing upward. It looks kinda unprofessional to me in a weird way...when holding a weapons doesn't it usually feel a lot more natural to have it pointing downward? I really don't know what standard protocol in the military is for weapon handling, but it would probably seem better if the running animation was like the one in ofp elite and seen in early armed assault screenshots: http://img.gamespot.com/gamespo....010.jpg [over 100kb]

The only thing is that Dod:s does this VERY overstated. I sometimes round a corner expecting that MG noise to be 1k away....only to be riddled by it from 25m. But the way they did it is very simple, One channel=ownsound, second channel=distant sound. Makes it easy to mix depending on distance and soundwave simulation is already in OPF so delay is not a problem. Yes, they did this most likely because of the small size of the maps...but in a game like Armed Assault, the effect would be really amazing.
-
The seventh songs are still there, but if nothing else is changed make sure you overwrite your RES dta folder, otherwise the RES sound folder will just overwrite the default OFP one. These sounds are really great...the new bullet whiz is a lot better and a lot more distinct. I really like it.
-
cool...is this legal though? And how did you get the sounds from XBOX to PC?
-
The only game I have seen come remotely close to those videos in terms of sound is day of defeat: source. I would still love this in ofp...the source engine played around with sounds like this but to do it can be really demanding on the system. However, it will still be really, really awesome if at least the pitch got higher as weapons were fired from further away.

Almost every blackop mission in ofp is a wow moment for me. For all the games that feature rambos and special forces, whenever I play a flashpoint 1985 blackop mission...I mean, I really feel special forces. The feats I have escaped with are outstanding. I remember in the mission "saboteur" I took out a few guards and blew an ammo dump...when the guards investigated the damage, I stole a tank and waste a base. Suddenly they were sending tanks to counter-attack me...so I stole and m17, killed a lot, and then got shot down by an mi24 only to bail right over my extraction zone It was just the feeling of one guy raising this much hell with such cunning that was awesome, narrowingly escaping detection all the time and such.

Not in OFP. I don't understand what are you saying. Isn't this from OFP? I thought CP thread was only OFP/VBS engine screens shots. I think its VBS. Just not an addon for ofp
