Better to say that 800MHz is the data frequency, while 400MHz is clock frequency, in which case CPU-Z displays correct information, and the manufacturer also labels the ram correctly, but referring to different properties. edit: Â Ok, I guess I have it solved now. Â The packaging says 4-4-4-12 because it's able to run at that latency and still be stable, they assume you will overclock it, but by default it runs at 5-5-5-18. Â The product sheet mentions that this is a JEDEC compliant timing so I guess that means it meets some standard level of stability. Â At least I know where those numbers are coming from now, it's not just some random mismatched settings in the BIOS, or a mistake from CPU-Z.

Indeed, it seems that DDR & DDR2 use something called "double pumping" which transfers data on both the rise and fall of the pulse, so a clock frequency of 400MHz acts like 800MHz. Â So that's fine. "PC2-6400: DDR2-SDRAM memory stick specified to run at 400 MHz using DDR2-800 chips, 6.400 GB/s bandwidth" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR2_SDRAM I wonder about the 5-5-5-18 though. Â I guess I'll have a look in the bios. Â I just don't want to break anything since it's all stable now :-)

Am I underclocking? Â CPU-Z shows my ram at 400mhz. Â The mobo manual mentioned that the P5B might causes 800MHz DDR2 to run at 667MHz. If so, where do I fix it? Â BIOS? Â Asus software? Â Or is it perhaps just underclocked when I don't need it to save power and reduce heat? edit1: it's Corsair twin2x PC6400 C4, so 4-4-4-12, whatever that means. Â They didn't have the standard stuff there so I got the C4 version for $30 more, but I didn't plan to overclock it anyway, I just want it to run at the rated frequency.

finally, Intel core2duo E6600 (i was convinced of the benefit of a 4mb cache) 2048mb Corsair DDR2 matched pair (C4) Asus P5B Asus EN7600Gt WD 75GB Raptor WD 250GB The Raptor is formatting right now... a nearly flawless build except for when I forgot the IDE cable and wondered why it wasn't booting from the CDROM drive. It's always a bit of a relief when everything works and there's no smoke (so far)

Canon 350D + Sigma DG f3.5 18-200mm + Canon EF 50mm f1.8 I keep forgetting to save jpgs in a manner that preserves EXIF for the curious. Shame that photoshop save-for-web strips that away.

Re: DDR2 price trends Thanks guys, especially Colossus, I tried finding some price trackers myself but couldn't find any. It may be in Norway, but all the trends match what happened here. I guess I'll try to stick it out for a while and see if I can still get this upgrade for <$1K!

Have RAM prices (PC6400 especially) jumped up in the last month? I have a list of parts to buy, it was at CAD$1200 last month and I was hoping to wait until it gets to around $1000. Everything has gone down in price except ram, unless maybe I recorded the wrong price or the wrong part when I made my list. I want to get a Corsair matched pair (Dual Channel DDR2 2x1024MB PC6400 with CAS latency 5-5-5-12). I thought I had a price of CAD$287 about 4 weeks ago, and now it's around CAD$400.

I didn't get the kit lens, I just bought the 350D body. Â I have a Sigma 18-200m that rarely comes off the camera. Â For the price, the quality seems to be quite fine. Â I only find it a bit lacking in low light, which is why I got a Canon 50mm f1.8, also very good for the price. Â It's small, plastic, light, and while 50mm is a pretty tight frame on APS-C, it's nice to have around. The all purpose Sigma 18-200mm f3.5: http://www.sigma4less.com/sess....CA%3D29 I'll post some pics soon, when I have time to process them...

It's amazing how short sighted people can be though. I mean, "Conclusion: The 4.1 GHz Dual Core Delivers Peak Performance For Pocket Change". 260W@idle, 500W@peak? The E6700 is 130W@idle, 150W@peak. Both numbers are measured at the wall - the sum of all components in the case. Energy is still too cheap for that to matter much, but it's a big difference. I think they should also measure Watts per frame per second and see who wins.

I can't say anything for certain, but a 9250 can only run Doom3 in 640x480 at 15fps with all low quality settings, according to a review I just saw. Even when it was a new card, it was a low end budget card. A half gig of ram and a 1.4 GHz cpu won't help anything. I doubt if it will run any of the current games in a way that you could call "playable".

Thanks Denoir, exactly what I needed to know. Â On first sight, I just sorted the chipsets by number and thought the highest was newest :-P Â 965 it is then. Â Actually your setup is very similar to the list I've written up, although I prefer to buy a few degrees behind the cutting edge. Â I'm also interested in making a system that is as energy efficient as reasonably possible (fanless mobo, Core2duo, only 1 or 2 HDDs). Intel Core2duo E6400 ASUS P5B Deluxe - I'm sold on the P965, and onboard wifi is convenient. Corsair TwinX DDR2 pair - 2GB total Antec Sonata - old, but replace PS with Antec NeoHE 380 or 430W. GeForce 7600GT - affordable, what I save now compared to a 7900GTX will buy something much better in a year, hopefully it will still be PCI-E. I'm not totally sure about HDDs yet, I don't need massive storage space but data access speed is probably the most important upgrade i can make. Â I want a fast primary drive, but I need a second one for an efficient photoshop scratch disk. Â Maybe two WD Raptor 75GBs. Â Expensive! edit: What about RAM? I can't quite figure out what the deal is with all the different versions of DDR2-6400 RAM, and the latency numbers. I don't want to overclock, I just want efficient, stable RAM that will run well with my mobo at 800MHz. Probably just 2GB for now.

Hotshot, despite some very nice photos, one thing really bothers me and shows up in a bunch of your shots... it's often nice to give space around interesting features, whenever the edge of something touches right on a border, it creates a sort of attraction for the eye that usually isn't very desireable. Â Then again, maybe it's just me. Here's the spots I think you should have given another cm or so of space when you cropped. tangents I had to make this rough example to satisfy myself that it does look better: no tangents "Watch out for tangents, that is, the convergence of visual lines where the silhouettes of foreground or background objects become confused with the silhouette of the main object, thus causing a distraction." This also applies to scene elements and the border of the frame.

i love my camera... i would have had some better coastal shots, except i got up really early on a beautiful morning, went out to the beach, and took tons of great photos with an empty card slot... the camera was set to act normally without a CF card... :-( Still learning...

I used to have an APC Back-UPS LS 700. APC has a good reputation. http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BP700UC&total_watts=200 Look for something around 750-1000 VA to run two PCs (especially if you want to keep CRT monitors running for 5min or more). You can get away with less batter capacity if you leave the monitors off battery, and just wait for power to be restored so you can continue working.

Just pricing some new motherboards, but can anyone clarify some important differences between the latest intel chipsets? I'm looking at ASUS boards that use 975X, 955X, 965P because I want something to support Core 2 Duo processor, and I like the passive cooling, and in general i like ASUS.

I was looking into the same thing a while ago. I'd like to have a simple toolkit for recording audio. The minidisc is fine for recording, but the standard mic is probably only good for vocals - interviews etc. Loud noises are always going to clip on standard mics. Recording from a distance where it's not clipping means you will lose all the finer detail sounds that a human ear will pick up near the source. I was sort of thinking that it would be cool to have 2-3 tracks recording from different mics in different positions (a shotgun mic seems to be the thing for recording loud SFX). Seeing the input live, to avoid clipping, would also be handy. For example, for recording a gun's sounds you might want to record from very nearby to get the sound of chambering a round and cocking the hammer, ejecting the shell. But the gunshot will clip. Record another gunshot with a more suitable mic from farther away and mix them back together.

It's nicely done. Â It's gets a stronger effect if you use a photo that has an obvious vanishing point (looking down a street or row of buildings) and also from a higher perspective, so you get the sense of looking down on a tiny model. Â I've seen a few aerial shots of a city that were given this faux-macro look, they were awesome. Anyhow, nice work. Â I hope to share some more in a few weeks, after I wrap up a bit of traveling. Diorama contest... Â

80gb monster. Â Don't know too much about it, except it's open source! Â All the reviews I found are old, from 2003. Â Still, I like the idea. Â I would never buy something with proprietary formats ever again (sony, ipod). http://www.neurosaudio.com/store/prod_USB2_80gbspec.asp Something like this would be more suitable for me and my 36gb of music. Â I don't need micro-technology. Â I travel with a 120mb external HDD in addition to my laptop. Â I could be happy swapping that external HDD for this thing.

More curve-stomping; there was great lighting at sunset today, these are taken out of my window. Â I'm having big issues with my laptop LCD, since a few degrees difference in vertical viewing angle makes a *big* difference in the appearance/curve of values, especially the bottom end of the darks. Â So I'm not really sure if I'm on target. I found tons of dust on the sensor, I was trying to get some longer exposures by tightening right up to f32 and exposing for 3-4 seconds. Â Those dust specs show up easily with such a small aperture. Â I stamped them out in photoshop, but will have to get that thing cleaned. goob, #5 works best for me, i like the expansive blue area. mi_fred, the first one is the strongest by far. Â nice colours.

Yeah, tripod & remote shutter release. Â Shots are anywhere from 5 - 45 seconds long, basically hold the shutter open until something fun happens. Â I should save them in a way that preserves EXIF data. Â Another look at the same thing, just over-manipulated... http://www.baconbomb.com/img/storm_x.jpg

Just lock your door? Â See killagee's photos: a nametag so worthwhile customers can find him. Your neighbours are not poor: flickr, webshots, photobucket, fredmiranda... you will quickly see that they offering all kinds of quality, and these are unmarked images, often at much higher resolutions than we can show here with a 100kb cap.
