Lets get Arma 3 elected for a steam award!
8LacK5naK3 replied to silentghoust's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
It`s gone in my "Whooaaaaa" category. For every single time arma falls on it`s own arse through it`s many, many 'arma-isms', there are at least another 4 or 5 times it`s just been truly amazing. We`ve all been there in the middle of a firefight and moved slighty to the left only to glimpse an RPG round flying directly through the space your head was literally a microsecond ago. We`ve all frozen in abject terror amongst the shortest little tufts of grass as an unexpected enemy tank rolls over the brow of the hill next to you, stops, and by some lunatic miracle, totally fails to spot you before eventually rumbling on by. The long walks across endless hills in the dead of night that suddenly explode in a truly wonderful fireworks show as a thousand little laser bolt tracers light up the night. That bloody rabbit that allllllways seems to stand up right in front of your optic as you`re about to pop one in the bad guy`s skull from a mile away.... -

Good luck with that 64-bit change making much of a difference. It`s not a magic bullet. It will ease a little pain for some, but it will not advance, fix, or otherwise sprinkle magic rainbow fairy dust on what we have atm. Plenty may see an easing of resources. Others may see a bit less hitching and faster loading in of textures. Some anal types spending more time looking at stats than actually playing may see something positive, but just shifting "to 64-bit" is not "the shit". It`s an improvement, no doubt, but it is not the huge change many will perhaps expect from such a thing. The current engine is what it is. Don`t go nuts expecting something massively different, when it happens, it`s nothing less than "an easing". Nothing more. It will still be very welcome though, given what we have right now.

These do look fantastic from the screenies (especially the iconic winter stuka) :) Going to have to find some time later on to test them out. Thank you, sir.- 14 replies

Shamefully, I did *finally* retire my OGR install a couple of years back. So many thousands of hours. So many happy times :) I did run this particular map/mission many a time, and the look and atmosphere is really spot on, given the models to work with. Very nice indeed. -

Sexy, although I would not like to fire anything whatsoever through that barrel unless I was standing way back behind some very thick glass ;) O/T, but I do love seeing work in that sketchfab site. Great way to actually see the quality that screenshots or a quick vid can`t ever hope to show. -
No, it`s not just you. I always did love flying the choppers, but I just can`t go anywhere near those trials. I really don`t want to smash the keyboard through the monitor :)

First version was way too short, as somehow it ended for me after shooting the initial enemies, and the 3 or so vehicles that (eventually) rolled out of the forest. There was nothing else after that. The second version is actually a vast improvement, although still a bit of a turkey shoot what with all the bluefor units around (and stumbling over a well-stocked russki with a dragunov)... I can never resist "borrowing" one of those :) Having any of these old missions in A3 is great though. The more the better. There are obviously going to be a lot of differences that will change the way they work (heavy metal.... ye gods, that tank "pathing") , but you`ve certainly done a fine job so far.

The cage is a lie... Sharks. Total bastards :)

Nice update. Tried it yesterday and although it ended properly to the debriefing screen, it did seem a little short.... New version is a lot more impressive. Any mission with large numbers of people or vehicles scooting about always makes for an entertaining spectacle.

I`ll give it a good go sometime corp, thanks for that :) In other news, the convoy is destroyed, and the area clear of all bad guys. Victory at (long) last.... Night patrol, vulcan and return to eden followed in quick succession. Gotta love a lazy sunday.

I`ve completed this mission probably hundreds of times over the years in OFP and CWR2 in all sorts of ways, and never had anywhere near as much trouble with it. It`s not your version causing it either, just A3s incredibly annoying cheaty ai nonsense. I`m playing less and less SP A3 as time goes on because of it. I mean, to watch an APC bobbing up and down in the water (turning its weapons past the massively high-priority squad of infantry close by in the open firing AT at it), targeting the top of my head poking up over the crest of a hill way in the distance, and instantly killing me with totally accurate fire on the first shots is all sorts of ridiculous  Looks like I`m going to have to plant a small field of charges alongside the satchels and leading mine just to guarantee the whole convoy is taken out (which leaves calling in Bravo pretty much redundant).

I think it`s time I gave up on arma, at least in single player. Just been wiped 6 times in a row on this one. No matter where I hide, no matter what I do, as soon as those vehicles come in line of sight with me (even if I`m prone behind a tree waaaaay up on the hill and the charges haven`t gone off yet), I`m obliterated instantly. The one time I thought I`d got away with it, and destroyed the tank and the soft skins, I called Bravo, and hid for a while. Bravo legged it out onto the road and started marching towards the dead convoy, nothing shoots at them, so I crouch and move towards the crest to see the mess I`ve left. Bravo spots a BMP (or BMD - I couldn`t see much of it as it was in the water trying to swim for its life), and they start firing AT at it from about 200m away. Even though I`m much, much, much further away with only my head looking just over the hill at the waterborne APC, I watch its turret turn towards Bravo..... and totally ignore them - even though they are standing there in plain sight, firing AT rounds. I watch the barrel swoop round right at me, and it immediately fires everything it has right at my head. didn`t even have time to duck. I hate arma and all it`s cheating ai bullshit. I need to find somewhere to play online, so I`m not the one and only target on the battlefield :)

Sweet. Someone`s been busy today :)

They spam simply because they can. Any forum, anywhere. It`s not like it`s specifically tailored to here, or the kind of people using the forum. It`s just junk posted wherever they can get into. This thread really should be moved over to "General" or "Q&A", somewhere other than here....

Reported 2 different spammers since waking up this morning. Worst day there`s been for a while with them.

That`s exactly the first thing I thought on seeing ineptaphid`s first pic :) That thing looks much better than I ever thought it could.

Any good mission for this would need a masterstroke of mission making genius, what with the sides never being quite what they seem. If there`s ever been a more fucked up, convoluted conflict in history, please point it out :) Sadly stuck in Airdrie in Scotland right now where the same troubles continue (albeit in a much smaller scale), and it`s one of those conflicts that never did get the representation in gaming that it deserved (along with the falklands). Would be nice to experience a little bit of something closer to home than the usual east-west, middle east or WW2 thing, but anything close to a realistic mission would be.... difficult. ..funny thing about that 3CB release. First thing I did was go through the pack and noticing the new stuff, started putting together the whole para gear. It`s not perfect, but the time and place was suddenly all there on-screen. Lots of potential with a handful of commonly used mods. -
It`s definitely not just you. Seems to have started around the time they were fiddling about with the lods, and those trees now look utterly dreadful.
-
Always did wonder about those myself. I`ve definitely had much better results applying the limits manually. Setting the vid card to 1664 works best for me in win 7 pro with an nvidia 660 2G. I get much less hassle from the OS popping up occasionally complaining about "slow performance". With cards over 2G, who knows... I`ll find out whenever I get round to grabbing a 1070. Setting the system memory to 10240 (out of 16G), has definitely improved disk thrashing and hitching in-game. Leaving it at default unchecked simply was nowhere near as smooth with many units in play on heavy maps, and manually adding higher than 10240 here seemed to massively increase disk thrashing and hitching. I did try several values from 2G all the way up to 10240, but none were quite as effective in keeping the frames or occasional hiccups at bay. Suppose it`s just about getting the figures right for the system as well as the game. I would definitely always use the manual figures though after getting much better results here, than I did when leaving them unchecked.
