Lawyer Stephen Hopper said family had been denied any contact with Mamdouh Habib, 46, who was arrested in Pakistan in early October and was now being held by United States forces in Afghanistan.

Mr Hopper said Mr Habib's family was aware of reports that other detainees captured in the US-led war against terrorism had been tortured.

They were particularly concerned about the time Mr Habib spent in Egypt, where he was questioned after his arrest.

"They have heard stories about Egypt and they are certainly concerned about that (torture) and they believe it is a real possibility," Mr Hopper said.

While there was no evidence to suggest Mr Habib had been tortured, his family was extremely anxious about his welfare.

Mr Habib's family went to ground today, with Mr Hopper saying they were extremely distressed and could not face the media.

Their modest brick and fibro home in Cooper Road at Birrong, in Sydney's west, was locked and quiet, and neighbours said they knew little about the apparently shy family.
