Die Alive 0 Posted April 18, 2002 Small Plane Slams Into Milan Skyscraper Thu Apr 18,12:20 PM ET MILAN (Reuters) - A small tourist plane hit a skyscraper in central Milan Thursday, setting the top floors of the 30-story building on fire, a police official said. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion from the office block, which houses the administrative headquarters of the local Lombardy region and sits next to the city's central train station. "I heard a strange bang so I went to the window and outside I saw the windows of the Pirelli building blown out and then I saw smoke coming from them," said Gianluca Liberto, an engineer who was working in the area. The building is known as the Pirelli skyscraper but the Italian tire and cable company does not operate out of the building. It is one of the symbols of Italy's financial capital and is 127 meters-high. "A Piper plane has crashed into the building," a police official said. He added he had no further details. Sadico 1 Posted April 18, 2002 Yeah, CNN says they radioed a sos before crashing. The building is not endangered, it's made of concrete (unlike the twin towers).

The reason why that building won't come down is because you don't have 10,000+ of gallons of jet fuel burning in it.
Sadico 1 Posted April 18, 2002 I meant that concrete is more resistant to fire than steel, not that it is inmune. Concrete will crumble if you heat it like hell, but steel at 900 ÅŸC behaves like chewing gum. Also it's true that the piper carries a bit less fuel than the b767
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 18, 2002 hmm. usually when a pilot experiences engine trouble, he tries to deadstick his plane into an emergency landing. Crashing into the tallest thing you can find is not part of that procedure (maybe they teach European pilots differently... ). Lets just hope it was an accident... not that that'll bring back any lives lost...
LordZach 0 Posted April 18, 2002 maybe he lost controls too. who knows. too early to tell but without speculation we wouldn't need an offtopic board.

advocatexxx 0 Posted April 18, 2002 Italians call 30-story buildings skyscrapers ? We in New York call them condo houses.
LordZach 0 Posted April 18, 2002 there's a 8 story building downtown and everyone acts like it's the empire state building. must be comparing it to surroundings.
Die Alive 0 Posted April 18, 2002 I lived in a village where a 2 story building was the tallest, and it even had an elevator (lift)! -=Die Alive=-
Longinius 0 Posted April 18, 2002 "Italians call 30-story buildings skyscrapers ? We in New York call them condo houses." On the other hand, Italians only lose a couple of people if a plane crashes into the building while Americans lose a couple of thousand. Bigger isnt always better. DarkLight 0 Posted April 18, 2002 Very nice Longinius In Antwerp (a city where i live pretty close to) there's a building that's about 120 meters, i think, it's one of the highest buildings there. At least we can see a bit from the sky Oh well, i wouldn't want to live in a town full of huuuuge buildings.

rpc007 0 Posted April 18, 2002 well the plane that hit the italian skyscraper was only a small private plane carrying 90 gallons of gas, and it made a huge hole
Wobble 0 Posted April 18, 2002 On the other hand, Italians only lose a couple of people if a plane crashes into the building while Americans lose a couple of thousand. Bigger isnt always better. actually.. it was 2 buildings, there were 2 planes each being 40 times the size of the piper and carrying jet fule and moving at at least 4x the speed.. and the estimated death toll is at 2500 and declining.. but whatever you say... Guest Posted April 18, 2002 big buildings + big planes = 2500 dead small building + small plane = 3 dead Bigger is not always better.. which was his point.

Secondly, before Sept 11, there was a 17 yearold in florida who rammed his plane into a building (and no one talked about it). But for the milan one, that guy should have been able to avoid the building, airplanes still have hydralik power even when the engine shuts off (its called batteries).
