live stream of Gulf oil leak

Recommended Posts

Can't plug a leak on the ocean floor but you can watch it spew out from the comfort of your own home. Scary stuff.

F**K YOU BP

After this stunt I want you to be closed down for good.

So by the time this is fixed, the whole ocean will be black

oil coming out of my faucet will be the reality of it.

They need to get that solved damn it, it's been a month now.

Oh yeah, oil prices rising high and down there it just keeps on spilling.

How much oil is coming out of that ... 1/2 ltr per second?

How many ltr´s of water are there in the ocean..

For how long will it go on like that...

Not a nice math to do regarding one drop of oil can waste 1000 ltr´s of water.

And gas dropped here 20 cents/gallon the last few days, go figure...

I heard that this well was for exploratory research, the oil being released isn't designated for production yet. the spill should have little effect on gas prices.

The only method they know for sure will stop the leak is at least 2 months away from being complete or so I just heard. They have a few other theories that can be implemented sooner but they are unsure if they will work or not.

They f*** up with the not working security shutdown in the first place, oil rigs need more controls!

Still kinda taken back by the irony. Not to long ago everyone was debating on digging in the`"Arctic National Wildlife Refuge". Now we have tons of oil just floating around destroying wetlands and coasts.

Not sure of the exact science of it all, but won't this eventually become a problem for Mexico and Cuba before to long?

Hard to say because they're still not sure how much is spilling/spilt and how it's spreading beneath the surface booms, but Cuba has been mentioned.

From what I heard about the currents in the area it is more likely going to affect the southern coast, Florida, and the eastern coast of the United States. The current they showed travels around Florida from the Gulf and up the Eastern Coast of the United States. It is still possible that other currents might lead to Mexico and Cuba though too.

Hi all

Halliburton were the company who did the cement and pipework on the Deepwater Horizon rig.

Some interesting facts:

1) Halliburton is no longer a US company. It moved its operations to Dubai a year ago in order to avoid US Regulations, possible investigation and paying massive Taxes on its past US military contracts.

Halliburton is now an Arab company and its military contracts are being removed as a consequence. It is interesting to note that for some time and certainly since the time it was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, around the time of 9/11 Halliburton's majority share holders have been Arab.

http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/Business/story?id=2942429&page=1

2) The Minerals Management Service (MMS) was already investigating the use of inferior grade cement jobs for sealing gaps between the well pipe and the hole drilled into the ocean floor on tens of recent shallow water rigs in the Gulf of Mexico that has been implicated in several previous blow outs, poor cement jobs have been found to be the commonest root cause of blowouts (loss of well control) in recent years; around 30% according to testimony to the US Energy and Commerce Committee.

THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST.

This link allows you to look at incidents by year area and effect.

http://www.mms.gov/incidents/Incidents1996-2005.htm

And has been giving warnings like these about poor cement jobs since 2000.

http://www.mms.gov/safetyalerts/2.htm

Some examples of it in incidents:

http://www.mms.gov/incidents/SigPoll2005.htm

http://www.mms.gov/incidents/blow2000.htm

Note the similarities in this 2005 case

November 22 & 23, 2005 – BP Exploration & Production Inc. (Operator) & Transocean Offshore (Contractor)

http://www.mms.gov/incidents/SigPoll2005.htm

Please note poor cement jobs are often listed as equipment failure as in the above case in 2005

And whistle blowers have been trying to warn about it.

http://solveclimate.com/blog/20100524/investigator-warned-mms-2009-about-deepwater-gas-blowouts-gulf-mexico

Further Halliburton seems to have developed a habit of having major blowouts on fields that threaten the Arab oil monopoly.

Halliburton is already under investigation in relation to an almost identical giant blowout to the Deepwater Horizon rig disaster that took place in Australian waters earlier this year.

http://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2010/05/halliburton-could-be-at-fault-for-oil-spill/56131/

The Energy and Commerce Committee has already asked for details of Halliburton’s work on the Deepwater Horizon rig, plus they have now asked for all documents Halliburton have related to the blast and details on inspections of the rig.

3) A lawsuit has been filed in federal court by Natalie Roshto, Wife of Shane Roshto, deck floor hand on the Deepwater Horizon rig, whose body has not yet been recovered.

The claims of the suit are that Halliburton "prior to the explosion, was engaged in cementing operations of the well and well cap and, upon information and belief, improperly and negligently performed these duties, which was a cause of the explosion."

http://axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/Article_59658.shtml

http://schema-root.org/commerce/corporations/petroleum/halliburton/

And various other new sources are all now reporting this.

It seems like several of the Tranoceans crew have pointed the finger at Halliburton.

4) Despite making Billions from its cementing system on rigs Halliburton does not feel it has any reason to join in the clean up and response effort.

In the original clean up response website

http://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/go/site/2931/

There was a NONE appearance of the Halliburton logo in the clean up efforts in the website and to the best of my knowledge Halliburton have not paid a single penny toward the clean up effort, or any money to businesses adversely affected by the leak.

While both BP and Tranceocean were and are there with their wallets wide open and stating they will exceed the normal limit on Oil company public pollution liability that was included in a previously secret change of rules to Oil Drilling by former Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney.

When you are caught by the police Lawyers tell you to say and do nothing

It is common practice for the lawyers, of a firm which is liable in any legal case, to tell their clients not to admit any culpability in form of word, writing or deed. eg do not get involved in the clean up if you are the cause.

The only firm involved in the tragedy that is acting in that way is Halliburton.

Interestingly while the change in the rules, for public pollution liability, for a clean up of a disaster affects a companies liability to cover state, federal, and external entities (fishermen hoteliers etc.) costs. It has no effect what so ever on the parties liabilities in a commercial contract.

In other words if BP and Transocean know that they are not the cause of the tragedy they can recover any costs they incur cleaning it up plus a percentage on top from the culpable party.

In other words BP and Transocean can pay for every penny of clean up, and all liabilities for fishermen, hoteliers, SPCA wild life clean up; as well as Loss of Good Name and their own costs; knowing full well that they can recover it all from Haliburton even if it exceeds the public pollution liability amount. PLUS they can legally make a profit off it!

I thought the oil was all leaking out of a broken pipeline. Half way along where it snapped, rather than from a hole on the seabed.

To be fair to BP, the weren't the ones operating the MODU when the accident happened, it was Transocean.

On the subject of solutions, Kevin Costner has come up with a plan, his brother has a machine that can seperate the water and oil holding the oil in a giant container. Just drop it in the sea and let it do its thing apparently.

http://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=93663&rss=true

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1279335/Gulf-Mexico-BP-oil-spill-Kevin-Costner-comes-rescue.html

@Walker, Halliburton's cementing quality probably isn't any worse than anyone else, the fact that they had only just finished that part of the job with Deepwater Horizon probably meant that the concrete was more prone to breaking for a day or two. If BP's initial investigation is to be belived then such an abnormal amount of methane gas would probably have done the same to any other rig...

Hi Baff1

The cause of the broken pipe was a catastrophic loss of well control otherwise known as a "blowout" the classic thing you see portrayed in oil drilling disaster movies.

Oil under ground is at quite high temperatures, as you go further into the earth the temperature rises this increases pressure. As well as this the mass of earth above and in this case also the weight of ocean is all pushing down on the oil bearing rock. The liquid as with all liquids is incompressible but like any liquid it is still mobile and under pressure squirts out; additionally there will be gas which may be compressed to liquid at these pressures or which can be dissolved in the liquid oil like CO2 in Coca-Cola which will if it is allowed to expand then boil and thus expand rapidly.

A massive amount of gas somehow got into the drilling pipe and burst out at the top causing an explosion destroying the rig and thus breaking the pipe in several points as the rig sank.

At the time the Deepwater Horizon blowout occurred Halliburton were at the time engaged in the final cementing. The well and drillers were replacing the drilling fluid, with saltwater in order to recover the valuable drilling mud which is reused. Saltwater can be up to 40 percent lighter than drilling mud and must be held there, thus if there are any cracks or gaps or bubbles in the cementing these act as nucleation sites like mentos in coca-cola bottle allowing pressure and gas to suddenly build up and cause a kick in pressure or blowout.

Theoretically the Blow Out Preventer should have stopped this but something physical prevented it. One possibility is that cement found its way up into BOP clogging it.
