Possible Cluster Network for Arma2 or 3!

Recommended Posts

My original post was to Benny in his Warfare Thread:

I might not make myself clear on this one, but please bear with me. Is it possible to create multiplayer slots which you could get slave PC's to join to take over some of the AI work? For instance, I have network of 5 PC's at home (only 3 could run arma server.exe) but they could join as a SLAVE slot (a client side script) to take over some of the AI work the server has to do... I understand the problems of connection issues (I think...). in brief - create some MP slots which will run a separate script for resistance and occupation AI. I suppose a cluster network is my idea... (problem ... are the GUIDs created from the MAC address, if connecting from a different PC on the same network a problem?). It is just that imagine if 20 people are playing they can get their LAN PC's to help with the AI work, possibly 1000's of AI on a map.

but my question also extends to BIS. Are there any plans to create a (let's say) a slave.exe which could run the same mission as server.exe and take over some of the AI processing? For instance on a LAN network, one computer running main game can delegate AI work to a few slave computers on the network. Could this be done? What are the issues relating to the maximum effectiveness? What are the possible limitations? Does anyone have a clue how this could be done? What are peoples thoughts on this?

It does seem a shame that some people have networks of 4 or 5 computers (yes, some old single core laptops) but which could be utilised by Arma2 (or will it be Arma3!)....

For instance using MPICH2 http://www.mcs.anl.gov/research/projects/mpich2/

or extending your propietry messaging system?

I write this as a complete amateur, with the understanding that I am probably the fool asking the wisest man the question he can't answer...:D

Any client is a potential slave. You can offload AI etc on any client.

Your 5 PC's could all be set to the lowest graphics settings, connect to a server, and the rest you take care of in the mission (scripts etc).
