Crusades/Medieval Mod

Recommended Posts

June 2012 edit:

I recently picked this up again at a slow pace, so don't pack your things just yet, the crusade may not be over... see http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?96780-Crusades-Medieval-Mod&p=2166180&viewfull=1#post2166180 .

And this:

January 2013 edit:

Somehow the romans got me more interested in the last months which is why the roman (sub)-mod contained in this thread will be released prior to the actual crusades mod (if that made any sense)

Progress report can be seen here:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?96780-Crusades-Medieval-Mod&p=2273672&viewfull=1#post2273672

I had the idea of creating a mod like this for the OFP/ArmA series but I never was patient enough to learn modding and other mods in this direction (OFP mod for crusades, roman mod) dropped dead.

In Mid 08 I learned working with O2 by creating my first addon (Tomb) and some medieval objects, however I lost the latter through some user-specific "mishandling" of Partition Magic.

Over the months I rebuilt some stuff when I felt like it and improved, my current objects look way better than when I started.

__________

So, my idea is creating a medieval mod with first containing two factions, crusaders and saracens. I'm not aiming at 100% historically accuracy (e.g. I wouldn't think about if the crusaders had their cords turned left or right ;) ), but if there are (not requiring a :butbut: amount of time) suggestions of improvements I'm open for them :bounce3: .

My plans are to finish the crusaders and some saracen model wise and add further medieval buildings/fortifications. I also have a moderate understanding of creating islands so I would create one in the future when I feel like I have enough objects ready.

However I really need help with the combat system and possibly animating (bows). I tried to see how zombie scripts work (e.g. Rommels small script

and using speed reductions and melee animations (BIS left 3 in ArmA2, see them here:
) it may prove promising.

(Note the model in the second video is outdated)

I allready have read alot of tutorials etc. and made progress in relation to my beginnings, but fsms or scripts longer than 10 lines give me the creeps.

I'm also modding for another project (Stargate), so my actual available time to learn about fsms etc. is scarce.

The thing is I need help with the combat system, of masterminds like in the good old OFP days who gave us jumping aliens, velociraptors, (light-)sword battles with user input... etc

It looks great but isn't melee pretty much vital and one of those things ArmA is never going to do all that well?

What crusades are you intending on representing? 1st -9th?

and are you concerntrating on any particular factions or just the general "crusader" theme? I dont intend to come off as negative it's just curioisty speaking, the current stuff you've shown looks great and I'd love to see more!.

Quite refreshing ! If i may be touchy, the helmet on the archers' head should be slightly repositioned.

Looks excellent, you've done a good job so far replicating such a different era in game. I've always been a fan of other eras in game, particularly when it's before the use of gunpowder :)

They have come a long way since you first posted them in the WIP thread. Nice shader mixing!

Yep I didn't really pick a particlar timeframe, but in general "before gunpowder, with longbows and crossbows". :p

Now you mention it, I feel the same way ;) . He seems to float abit, I'll also probably lower the upper part of it abit.

Yep thanks, I also like my progress seeing it from the original start. I still have to to create a single uv layout though, right now the normals aren't seamless as the texture is segmented.

Definetly would be nice, like in the OFP mods. But I'm not really the scripting mind.

looks really nice Icewindo :) cant wait.

But what happend to the vid you posted in the thread "Monsters, zombies and so on".....I liked it, shows the Crusades in motion...thought you would of put that here too?

PS.@Tobie ..lol classic dude I cant believe anyone would link to that vid of mine....nice :) ..but sadly BIS animals are way too simple and cant be controlled easily...if at all, Any horse mod will have to be a completely new mod.

Nah, very easy to implement, as easy in ArmA2 as i did in OFP : an invisible vehicle with a horse as cargo, a script that animates the horse according to the empty vehicle speed, that's it

The WWII modders may be interested in it as well, plenty of stuff was still being moved around by horse then.

Blurb for Axis Cavalry

It is often forgotten that the German Wehrmacht of 1939-45 relied heavily upon horses. Not only was the majority of Army transport and much of the artillery dependent on draught horse teams; the Germans also kept a horse-mounted cavalry division in the field until the end of 1941. After withdrawing it, they discovered a need to revive and greatly expand their cavalry units in 1943-45. The Army and Waffen-SS cavalry proved their worth on the Russian Front, supported by other Axis cavalry contingents - Romanian, Hungarian, Italian, and locally recruited. In this book an experienced horseman describes that last generation of horse-soldiers in a text supported by tables, photographs, and meticulous colour plates.

It could also be used to kit up the Polish Cavalry

I'd love to see some Templars. They've always been my favourite kind of crusaders. Good job so far and I look forward to a release if that ever happens. :D

It's deader than elvis atm.

Had some good progress with bktman who edited Rommels zombie script, but I dropped the ball soon after.

Unless a magic trapdoor opens containing the wisdom of a mastermind of 5+years scripting experience in ArmA/OFP, it will certainly stay that way.

Sad to hear.

On a side note: Elvis ain't dead! He just went home, to P3X-948. :yay:
