Try disable HT and see if thats actually the problem!

of course , if not i did nt have to post

i think BIS knows the problem ,but they don t do anything,i don t think i m gonna buy the next addon for arma 2 if this is not resolves.

its a problem with only i7core system i think(im not sure)

im not going to the bios everytime i need to play at arma2 ,this is a lot frustating to boot the bios everytime for each game you play no?

thx

Hi EricD,

i think it has sometingh to do with this problem http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=94601

if I'm not wrong most of the user involved has i7 processor, and probably win7.

only thingh we can do for now is voting here http://dev-heaven.net/issues/8746 and hope they will resolve the bug fast , they're trying to improve the game of course but they can't do miracles ;) but I'm sure they're working hard :)

I have an i7 Core 920 CPU and i don't have the problem, i run WinXP 32bit.

So maybe problem is Win7 which ArmA 2 seems to have a lot of problems with already.

@massi

The ticket you linked to is about CTD, Eric's problem is that the game freezes a lot!

I have an I7 920, too, running Win 7 64 bit and don´t have the problem, either.

Gotta admit, game feels faster/ smoother when only turning around then when moving.

Setting HDR- Prescision to 32 made it much smoother for me!?

hi

i already put the cpu count ,it doesn t do anything better

i have exactly the same symptoms ,where did you set hdr precision 32 @st ??

and does it arrange something?:)

thx to all !!

im running seven 64 bits

Look under Documents\ ArmA2\ ArmA2 config

There you can change your HDR- Setting (default is 8), setting shader- quality to 100 makes the game look much crisper, too:)

-cpuCount=4 with HT is really bad. Means you actually only giving arma 2 cpus which is 50% cpu power of the i7 cpu and there 4 threads you see will almost max out unlike if you was using -cpuCount=4 with HT off.

Tested this on server. With HT off, Server on 2cores would use around 35% out of 50% on average But when set to 2cores with HT on both cores maxed out because them 2cores with HT was was really acting as 1core

i'fe got an I7-860 aswell, and it works like a charm.

HT disabled.

-maxcpu=4 and -winxp parameters are set

I don't think it'd be possible for BIS to fix it.

The Hyperthreading problem (freezing, lag spikes, etc) is caused by cache thrashing. The problem is with Hyperthreading itself, not a specific program, and technically any program that utilizes more than 4 cores and utilizes a lot of CPU power will suffer from cache thrashing with Hyperthreading enabled (well, it's a little more complex than that, has to do with CPU switching and threads and such)

One thing you could try is start up Arma 2 then goto task manager (ctrl+alt+del-> Task Manager), then right-click on Arma2.exe and choose "set affinity...", then unmark the cores you don't want to use (just keep cores 0-3 marked)

well thx ,

believe it or not ,in making these 2 tips hdr 32 and 4 cores" activated ,and hypertreading, it works now very well ,don t ask me why i can t answer but the fact is here ,now it works much smoother and no more lags.:D

so strange no ?

maybe i should try without hyperthreading, but as i m a flight simmer 'fsx) i don t want to go everytime in my bios to take off the hyperthreading and put it back after 'waste of time ) lol

Maybe it runs good on that setup because the missions you play are cpu friendly and would normally run ok on 2cores? I have i7 920 gaming rig and a i7 860 server and both have HT off and run better. No real need to have HT on for gaming unless you use other programs that benefit from HT being on

FSX doesn't use more than 4cores if that...

But yeah it would be nice if Bis good hide the engine from more than 4cores...Also it would be nice if Driver profiles for the game didnt gag on the extra cores too...

I have just tried running the game with HT enabled and with HT disabled in the Bios. I also tried the -cpucount=4 both with and without HT enabled in the Bios. I then tried using Phys X enabled and disabled with all above scenarios. The last thing I tried was running with force vsync off, once again in all of the above scenarios. This was a fairly exaustive test, BTW:eek:.

My final result after all this testing was what I would consider to be equal results. My FPS at the same testing point varied by 1-2 FPS (Average of 35). The only real difference I was able to see was the tearing effect when I used force vsync off.

I also ran the Arma mark scenario to get a fair comparison. Once again my scores were very, very close to each other in all the varied scenarios I tested.

I don't have any major problems running the game but was looking for a possible boost so I could up my detail settings (most on normal with screen settings at 1440 x 900, monitor max).

My final findings is that I had no real difference when trying all the ideas I have found online about hyperthreading, cpucount=, phys X and vsync. I don't know what the answer is but it may have more to do with any backround programs running than anything else, since Arma 2 seems to be more processor heavy than other games I have played. I am not a CPU specialist in any way but have tried most everything I have seen on these forums and have had no significant difference when trying them all.

I don't say this to bash anybody. I am just trying to post my results here, therefore maybe it can help others:).

My system specs- i7 920, Gigabytye GA-EX58-UD3R, Nvidia GTX260- all running at factory specs.

well i made the 1 rst bench with the 2 tips and also without.

hdr 32 cores 4 , 56fps in 1920x1080

without ,40 fps in 1920x1080

both in win seven 64 and ati 5850

i don t know what to say ?? facts are there...

glad i could help you a little, just with HT on I would try setting cpucount=8

Due to massive reports of I7 users with hyperthreading enabled, AddonSync2009 actually warns users to disable hyperthreading for best performance (in the launch window)

Just tried both these tweaks and I got a 10-17% increase in frame rates, mostly from the max cores tweak but I think the HDR one makes it look better, thanks :)

i7 920 mild OC (3.0ghz, stock cooler)

6gb DDR3

4870X2 2gb

Oh and I will just point out I am pretty happy with my frame rates, it stays smooth (the odd stutter) and only ever getting choppy when I make my own insane war heavy missions for fun

Can someone post a before/after picture with this "hdr 32" tweak?

Thanks!

yes I'd be quite interested to see the visual difference between HDR 8 and HDR 32 too.

Thanks guys !!

Well, after some playing around;

-cpuCount=4

and

HDRPrecision=32;

worked best for me.

- Stopped 95% the REALLY annoying lag spikes

- Dramatically stopped almost all the LOD morphing issues

- No lag while spinning on the spot

The "set affinity" & -winXP & cpucount other than 4 all didnt work, just made things worse (especially affinity).

I tried

HDRPrecision=64;

Seem to be better still, but after you shut down the game, it writes the config back to 8

Didnt try switching off hyperthreading ...... cuz I'm not sure how to! lol

Win7 64

i7 860 @ 2.8

Asus P7P55D Deluxe

4GB Ram

ATI HD 5700 1GB
