Why is this game not more popular?

Recommended Posts

1. Lack of advertising.

2. Hard to get into - Most playable content is user-made, yet most user-made content isn't really playable.

3. Bugs.

4. System requirements.

I think that's by far the top 4, and in that order.

Most people only like arcade, fast paced and noskill games. I showed some ArmA2 videos to my friends and they said "Wow thats so boring, how could anyone play that?".

Many missions that people make *are* boring though. Like I said, it's hard to get in to as it takes time and effort to find something enjoyable to play in this game. I find it worth it, but a lot of people don't.

Reading all this makes me depressed... I have never played any Bohemia Products before i got my Arma2 game, somthing i may regret now perhaps. Anyways.... I spend every minute of my free time on this game and i started playing it in june i think it was, thats about 1/2 year and i still feel like a 14 year old boy when i got my first PC and spent endless hours over a game call Wofenstein, never had the time to sleep and all i wanted to do was to play it more. Here i am, a 35 year old man just recindeled in the joy of gaming again, though i do have time for sleep now and ofc i work. It still feels like xmas everytime i dubbleclick my Arma2 shortcut. This is addictive and a beautifull game with lots and lots of charm.. endless posibilities and a community that makes stuff for all the other players... for FREE. I mean.. why are not everyone playing..

I can understand why you ask the question : Why is this game not more popular ? <Do they dont know about it?

the biggest thing is that this game isn't for everyone. it has a niche market. Which is fine with me. Like fine wine. :)

Girls are bad for you

- They take you time away from you

- They take your friends away from you

- They take your beer away form you

- They take your porn away from you

- If everything goes shit.. they take your house, dog, car, money, children, reputation, self-esteem...basicly everything you spendt your life gathering... now THATS A SERIOUS BUG ! So why spend so much time on somthing that has the possiblility to go so very very wrong ?

You know you've played BI games too much when your girlfriend is nagging, and you reply with "2, CEASE FIRE!". Yeah I did that before. Didn't go down well.

In my opinion Arma 2 is not more popular because it doesn't offer the 'quick fix', like most mainstream western media, be it games or otherwise. It requires the application of 'patience' and 'intelligence', without which it is pointless, unlike other modern games where you jump in, get your fix, and get out again. It's a bit like the difference between buying a production sports car and buying a hand made car like a TVR for example. Everyone knows the TVR is far more likely to break down than the production car, but people invest in it because it is a labour of love, and they enjoy spending hours in the garage tweaking their beloved machine, it's all part of the experience and charm.

The day Arma2 becomes super-popular is the day the passion will go out of it. Thats what makes this game a great amongst others, the passion of the people that make it, the passion of the people that play it and the passion of the community as a whole to have one united goal- to improve the Arma experience for themselves and others. I was thinking just this morning how refreshing it is to see that, and be a small part of it, because in modern life it's a very rare commodity.

for me, it's the setup and execution of a plan. Being with your clan, working together as a team. Knowing which clan member will do what job and how it will be accomplished and which one will prolly screw up. j/k. the trick to this game is finding consistent squad mates and working as a team or as opposition.

Not many games REQUIRE good team work. Most run and gun games make you want to feel like a hero. In arma2, you're just as good as your last kill.

Many times, I stop in this game and just take it all in. Sometimes it's flying as a passenger in a helo, with nothing to do except look around. then while taking in the landscape and going "wow somebody created this" you forget, and then see a rocket streaming through the trees, then shouting "missile left, break right" at all your might into the headset. Then after your squad mate that knows how to evade an unseen missile being called out, you just go "holy shit.". He lands a perfect landing, you get out,and he goes picks up another bunch of troops.

That is arma2. It's not the instant blast, bang, boom, rinse repeat. Sometimes winning is just getting to the battle.

Other times, it's being balls out nuts. Attacking a pack of AI or real players, you're the only one. Hearing bullet's fly by, diving down behind a wall and watch the bullet impacts blow dust off the same wall, inches from your face. Inching along hearing the bullet's snap and scream over your head. You get off a couple rounds and then see the glimpse of a btr roll through town. "You call out "BTR, center town heading your way." "Roger your btr... firing" then see a smaw rocket blast it......

I can't think of any other game that gives you this. Nothing.

For those that buy the game and immediately goes straight into MP and tries flying a helo, may not ever play it again, nor recommend it...

...but they are fun to watch sometimes.

When I say "hard to get into" I'm not even talking about the gameplay. Just the act of finding a good server to play on that is running the right missions (be it public or private), getting all the required addons installed and working and keeping them up to date and then not succeeding even 1 of these steps can turn a lot of people off and send them playing something that works as soon as you install it.

Arma 2 may be a game for niche players, but even those get turned off since it is also only for players that are willing to spend a lot of time just so that they can play.

Sure you can say how easy it is to do those things, but look from the perspective of someone who doesn't know how to do it. Not so easy for them to do it for the first time unless some friend explained everything to them. Most people won't even google things up to see how to make the game better, and those that will are not going to have an easy time finding what actually makes this game great if they don't know exactly what they should be looking for.

Games like OFP/ArmA/Arma2 need more time to test before release.

Campaigns and missions should be adjusted to SP or MP.

Perhaps telling the story in SP more believable and narrative incl. cutscenes + some extra infos? There is no need to overload missions with features, effects and other gimmicks.

Just yesterday we were fighting with AI - guess what those fun'lovin nerds done? 2x AT units with Metis and 2x AA with Manpads? Yes - those AI with manpads fired at MBT's and those with Metis only watched the show. Good to have some drinks around when playing Arma2. :D

I like it like this, I'd rather not have this turn into BF2 or COD.

Ok, here is my point of view, but before you kick my ass just think about what I have to say.

The most played types of games on the PC TODAY are still role playing games,RTS, flight sim, and turn base mil sim. FPS are not! FPS is the number one type of games played on a console this is a fact.

Every day more and more PC players are switching from PC to consoles this is a fact (for many reasons). Yes, I know PC are better in many ways but consoles are just easier and fit into players lifes better to just play games at home to relax after a hard days work.

Yes, I know ARMA is not like your average FPS on the console but, There is a need, want and large market of console players who want this type of game. A lot of the so called little console kids that grew up with the XBOX and XBOX 360 lets so 10-20 years old are now 20-30+ years old. We all know what happens with age, your taste changes with time this a fact.

If BOHEMIA can make the game work and they are working on it. This game will be a great hit with most console players in that age range which is a lot bigger then the PC FPS market. BOHEMIA will make better profits and more game companies will copy the formula. This game will be more popular. This was the question of the trhead.

What do you guys think, I know what the die hard PC boys are going to say but stop and think what was the question of the thread. Here is the real answer like it or not. The truth be told by me.

from Avibird 1 : If BOHEMIA can make the game work and they are working on it. This game will be a great hit with most console players

this affirmation is not sure... but who knows really

another thing is to consider : In Europe, the différence of success between France and Germany for example... just compare the MP number of sever in these 2 close country : how can we explain that ? is there a différence in Marketing ? For ex here in France it is quiet difficult to find de PC game ArmA 2 in général stores, you need to go to specialise game store with PC desks...

Its the game itself.

For the new players its always hard to get into a game like this.

For the old players the game got old (if you played OFP:R, Arma and now A2).

Technical problems, bugged content and high system requirements.

I think the real question is: Why isnt A2 as appealing as OFP was back then?

Not to be a prick or anything, but can you please backup your facts with statistics, research etc? Stating things like they are fact really need some proof. And even though consoles might be taking bigger parts of the market, is this because of PC gamers switching to consoles or new gamers starting with consoles? Things like that matter when you're posting things like a "fact".

Again: don't take this the wrong way. I'd just like some proof if people are claiming to know "the truth" (if that even exists).

Don't bother. He'll just answer with some more completely unresearched and misinformed buuuulshit he just made up on the spot.

Avibird1 is a counsol fanboy that finds it hard that BIS won't make Arma 2 for that platform. He really believes they will someday and trys to keep his thread alive, begging for them to sticky it. Dreams die hard for some people. Maybe Operation Arrowhead,eh?
