Helo and Plane flying tips

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I was wondering if people could give there tips on flying the helo's and A10's and such on here, things like what to do and not do when flying them, what key combinations may work best or are easiest to use, do you use a joystick or mouse, etc, etc. What exactly is the seagull functions in the "Aircraft settings"? any tips would be useful so feel free to add what is best for you that you have found, thanks all.

The seagull function is for when you die online you will become a seagull..literally.

I would suggest for piloting helo's you remember that at high speeds the rudder has little authority, I've used both mouse and joystick and my main suggestion is handle the controls lightly, the last thing you want to do is jerk too hard which will make you crash.

Practice by flying high into the air, this will give you room to test the controls to their fullest and experiment, maybe adjust the sensitivity as needed.

Remember that the further the nose banks down the faster, but more angled your helicopter will go thus to far banking could mean plummet and it is possible to bank and gain more inertia then you can counter by doing so, in such cases even pulling your helo back may not save you.

Likewise with the other way, there is a happy medium however, but all in all it's best to take it light and build speed rather then make a sharp bank to get a boost which could result in disaster.

Cockpit and exterior view can vary..while cockpit view gives you more immersion exterior lets you see a few more results and can assist in your first time landings, also remember to make use of auto hover but do use it when going fast otherwise the helo will bank high up and you will gain insane altitude.

Also don't screw around, this means trying to show off and do acrobatic flips in low altitude, while possible they require much altitude and are NEVER recommended below.. 200 or so I believe, it's been awhile. Also stay away from tree's if you can.

In the end helo control really isn't hat difficult it just takes some practice and you have to handle the control gently.

On planes I would recommend joystick if possible, they are tricky but not impossible with a mouse but it is definately better with a joystick.

Heres a very useful video I found in my days flying in ARMA1, same applies for ARMA2 ;)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cERmuVaVh0U&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cERmuVaVh0U&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Hope it helps

i use Q and E as nose up and down - this way i can pull my nose up with my mouse and my keys simultaneously giving me a hard banking combat turn on the tail of a filanker or else to pull up after diving attacks etc. hat extra bit of control in your left hand can make all the difference.

airspeed - try to operate planes at 300 mph to get used to manouvering, as belting it at 700-1000 means you won't have enough reaction time to line up your target properly when you first start flying, meaning you'll see-saw and likely crash when using rockets

put toggle view, freelook and TAB (next target) on your mouse thumb buttons - this reduces the need to look at yeyboard when engaging targets, winching or searching the ground

always fly with sidewinders on and manual fire on unless other targets are readily present

if you have manual fire on, turn it off before a gunner gets in as this can break the cannon function

to rearm when using a human pilot / gunner, all get out, pilot get in gunner, then get out, then get in pilot, wait for service, then let gunner back in. otherwise (as in arma 1) the chopper does not rearm.

reset your keys: double tap w for auto hover and dbl tap S for autohover off and dbl tap space for eject means you dont have to use menus for these useful functions

I also have WS for thrust up /down, AD for pedal left/right and ZC for bank left/right

don't slow down and turn your nose up when carrying a vehicle in mando hitch - it may crash into your ass - slow down then decrease height. Also, you can slow down in a hurry (if you're gonna overshoot) byt baking left and throttling down then banking back to the right still throttling down - this is S-braking - it works well in a dogfight too. when overflying missile firing infantry, speed up and roll on your side then pull back on stick to do a sharp turn then do it the other way, this will make many locked missiles overfly you (watch out for vikhrs - if you watch them in missile cam - they go around 3-4 times trying to hit you! so don't relax after it's first pass)

practice a lot - I've been flying in arma 3 years now and love it more each day - but i still have nasty accidents from time to time

landing on a carrier - use auto hover but keep your thrust up or you'll fall out ofthe sky.

using freelook and third person to scan for targets

avoid situations you can't deal with

wait until the last minute to fire at planes - get right on their tail and stick to them like glue (use freelook to track them with your head)
