Poll and incorporate some of the basic mods out there.

Recommended Posts

Think it would be nice if BI polled the community and incorporated some of the most favored mods out there that add basic functionality (thinking of WarFX and some sound mods in particular) into their next official patch.

They do greatly enhance the atmosphere and visual immersion of ArmA 2 after all.

Seems foolish to incorporate something people may only want from mods. I think BIS liked the way they made the game and would not want to force users to use a mod that they may want to play. Its fine now with mods being optional.

ARMA2 has a lot of ideas implemented that came from addons. ;) Some addon makers also got to work with BIS project based to implement some good stuff. So its already done.

Another thing. New addons come almost everyday. To implement everything all the time would cost us money. BIS cant get yet another work load to implement everything some think is great for free.

And ofcourse some doesnt like WarFX or a certain soundmods etc. So they would be angry and have to use addons to remove it. I think its best the way we have it here. Use the addons you like and tailor your game to your needs. :) Thats our tradition.

Actually, I think they do. In OFP and Arma1 we all had to resort to mods in order to have better view direction limits (true-view or something?). It appeared that basically everyone agreed to the idea that "due to the lack of body movement control in a vehicle, such an option should be builtin", and we got it in Arma2. If too many had complained with the idea that "but the body just can't do that" (which is technically correct), they wouldn't have.

There is a lot of convenience addons out there, but many don't like the idea of convenience for the sake of convenience, if it doesn't support the idea of realism. I.e. for tanks being able to run down trees unhindered not loosing speed. While it may be true for some trees, it might not for others, and emphasizes how tanks should not operate in or near woods in the first place (bad tactical idea in the real world at least).

For sound mods, who knows where the modders got their sources? Could be stolen borrowed from other games, so for obvious (maybe they don't care much about non profit usage such as mods, but for profit the ballgame changes) reasons not a good idea to implement. Others again require a great deal of scripting to be operative (multi cannon firing i.e.), which seems to be against BI philosophy.

The only thing I could see as a good addition, would be builtin support for extended eventhandlers, so that mods could be made more compatible with each other.

So, I think they should still continue focusing on giving modders more parameters to play with, allowing even cooler stuff to eventually take shape, than trying to implement something that may backfire (guess extended eventhandlers if not done right have this potential as well).
