Reporting contact?

Recommended Posts

I'm not clear on how to report a contact to the rest of the squad. Can't seem to find anything in the menu. Sometimes, my character announces a contact automatically.

Can someone fill me in on this? All I can find is how to order someone to ATTACK the contact, but not how to just alert the squad of it.

I normally hold down right click on the target. That seems to work most of the time unless its partially covered by a tree or building or something.

So long as you turn "autoreport" on, your reply is automated. You don't have to do anything more.

Hi, guys. Thanks for the reply.

I wasn't aware there was an autoreport feature. I'll have to look that up in the options (I assume). I'll try the right click again, and see if that works.

Cheers!

Argh....

Okay, this is the wacky, seemingly random stuff that is really messing me up.

I just set up a simple scenario in the editor... Me, some squadmates, and a group of bad guys. I looked at the bad guys through my scope, and wanted to report them. But, clicking the right mouse button just toggles the ironsight view on/off! I can't seem to report them! (at least with the right mouse button)

I DID find the autoreport on/off option in the difficulty settings, though... so at least there's that.

So, how again would I report hostiles?

I think that one of the main problems I have with Arma is that many commands use the same keys/buttons, so sometimes a (say) right mouse click will do ONE thing, other times it'll do another.... all probably fine, if you know what the heck is going on (...ex. you know the context you are in, and how that will alter the shared buttons/keys).

I think I need to change the key/mouse bindings... Too many times now, I've used the left mouse button to (attempt to) select something, and end up shooting one of my guys.

Argh... This sim will be SO amazing, once I can fully control things!

[LATE ADDITION]: Ah! Figured that mystery out. I had the 'bad guys' set as independents, so technically not a 'bad guy'. Set them to Russians, and now the right mouse button 'announce contact' thing works. See, I'm not saying 'this game sucks' or 'this is broken'.... Just trying to figure things out. I know there's some logical explanation, or it's just me not knowing how to do something... Cool, that's one down!

Turn off auto report: I think it feels a lot more realistic having to actually 'reveal' an enemy you see to your squad.

Remap 'reveal' button: Using RMB is a bad choice since you may accidentally reveal something. Considering the AI deficiencies, there are lots of reasons you don't want to reveal something even if you know about enemies yourself. In MP games, that constant "enemy spotted" is highly annoying, as you might be trying to say something over the channel yourself. Also, in MP, enemies spotted should be reported by voice which sounds much more realistic and can give better information than the built in system can ever do.

Personally I've remapped 'reveal' (and 'hold breath') to left ctrl. They work well together. Remapped 'hold breath' is useful since you determine when you need that extra stability, instead of everytime you zoom. I often zoom without intent of shooting.

Wise words! Ya, I'm definitely going to be doing some keyboard remapping. Many of the shared commands are really causing trouble (...ex. me shooting my squadmates when selecting them with the LMB!).

I'll take your advice with the remapping of Reveal and Hold Breath too. I too found it odd that they grouped the zoom and hold breath together. I am OFTEN zoomed in, but my poor guy is probably getting blue in the face all the time, since that makes him hold his breath too!
