Can anyone recommend me a good joystick for flying?

Recommended Posts

I also use the Xbox 360 gamepad for WIndows (wired, USB). Gives EXCELLENT control for helicopters. Joysticks couldn't give me the control I wanted. With the gamepad I can do manuevers that I only dreamed about doing with my Wingman Force 3D. Rotating in place is exceptionally easy. It's a simple manuever that any helo pilot would want at his disposal but with the joystick, even though it had the twist rudder built-in, it would send my chopper all over the place and usually resulted in crashing.

I still prefer a joystick for planes and jets though but I rarely use those in ARMA. Helis are more prevalent in the games I've played.

I have an old Saitek X45 joystick/throttle that I bought about 8 years ago, haven't tried it in ArmA but it worked well in the air combat sims I used to play. TBH, helis in ArmA are cake to fly compared to how they'd be IRL, in a dedicated flight simulator you'd need a proper joystick and rudder set just to get them off of the ground in one piece but in ArmA it's pretty simple, just tip them gently in the right direction and watch the throttle.

I fly with the mouse, keyboard inputs are just too jerky for the aircraft, mouse works quite well for the small amount I've flown - haven't really thought about rigging the joystick up. Just my humble opinion :)
