Can anyone recommend me a good joystick for flying?

I was thinking of getting one for flying. Does it really make flying easier and better?

The XBox360 pad is quite excellent for flying! ;)

And yes I'd say that it really does make flying easier (gamepad or real joystick doesnt matter). I still cant control helos with mouse and keyboard.

but honestly armas flying is more along the lines of Tom Clancy's HAWX lol or worse so any old joystick or a gamepad would be fine for arma.

I wouldn't recommend a joystick for A2, it really just makes it harder to fly, believe it or not. And even if you do want to use one, get a cheaper "light" joystick like Freedom 2.4 because flying is so simple that a HOTAS set would be more trouble than it's worth.

Keyboard and mouse are superior flying controls because mouse is good for precise movements and keyboard can be used for harder maneuvers (the planes stall only because of low speed).

I'd say the opposite. Flying with stick/throttle is a million times more natural and precise for me. But then i've spent a lot of time in flight sim style games so....

I use a Saitek St290 Pro. It's not overly complicated for a joystick, only 6 buttons including the trigger. It also has a POV hat, throttle and twist axis for rudder. Brilliant Joystick imho. :)

But it depends on how much you want to get into flying. I started with a Saitek X45 and then moved to CH (wich rules). This was not for ARMA though, but for combat flight sims like Falcon and Lomac.

But the Saiteks mentioned would be enough for ARMA. I woulndt purchase CH for it. Personal thing though. Check them all out and make a decision.

I have a similar one to Simon with: hat, throttle, twist, 12 buttons. It was about $50 from a game store.

Even if you don't use it in ArmA2, you might find another game or flight sim for it.

Personally, I think that is abit too expensive if youre just gunna fly for ARMA 2... if I personally have 2 saitek cyborgs that are 6 yrs old, and I still use em if I am away from my main rig, which is set up with an x52 pro. For casual flying, like BF2 and ARMA, you dont need a joystick more than 30-35 dollars... one that has a throttle would probably be the most important feature, as so you can control your speed far more precisely than with a keyboard. Don't need much more than that.

well i wasent going to use it just for arma. i was planning on getting a flight simulator. like flight sim x or something

X-52. CH Fighterstick + Pro Throttle& Pedals. Both setups are good, depends on how much you want to invest. I went with the low budget option (X-52). The stick also has Z-Axis twist, making additional rudder pedals redundant. As others, i don't use it with Arma but simulation titles.

anyone ever tried to implement rc helicopter radios into the game...i am extremely comfortable with the controls more so than a joystick, my fathers is a futaba 10-c and since he never flies his heli his radio sits here because it is used on a heli sim

it links up to the pc via a usb adapter cable and windows will recognize it

anyone heard of anyone doing this before or might i be the first one and have to figure it out all by my lonesome

I have one also. It is loads of fun, but very inaccurate compared to other joysticks. I'm thinking of switching for that reason.

Yes, to a certain degree. I'm using my MSFFB2, without the stick's software.

If you are looking for a cheap option:

Logitech Wingman Force 3D

- 4 buttons on the top, easy to reach with your thumb

- 1 directional button op top, not really effective

- 1 trigger up front of the stick

- 1 handle on the left, it works well in arma. You need your left hand to use it.

- 2 buttons down below on the left side, you'll need your left hand to use them (i rarely use them).

- The stick is not very heavy, but steady enough to make good movements with.

- The rotation of the stick arround his X-as requires some force, so you wont activate it by accident. It works natural once you get used to it.

- Works under vista

Saitek X52 Pro is the best joystick. I use it for ARMA 2, X3 Terran Conflict and Rfactor. I used to use Microsoft forcefeedback 2 but Microsoft does not support it anymore and most games have no forcefeedback so the joystick goes loose and floppy soon as a game loads. With the X52 you can change weapons cockpit displays and nav menues without taking your hands off the sticks due to the amout of buttons and you can colour code some of them.
