In the UK, the appropriate member of the House of Lords was asked whether the government was going to get rid of IE6 on its computers. He replied along the lines of "No, as all large pieces of software have bugs, and the alternatives will have bugs as well"
Typical.

And they don't consider the fact that IE6 support is bad for their own economy and stimulating external economy aswell.

Here in Holland we have a motion in our government since 2004 which states that every software solution should be free and open-source if possible.

Yet most government departments are still stuck with ancient Windows, Internet Exploder, Oracle, Exchange, etc.

There's a few cities in the US that operate entirely on open source stuff, I think Chicago is one. They use Linux, OpenOffice, FireFox and so on. Only the media departments don't use OSS, they use Macs. A lot of the US Government branches have and are moving over to Macs too like the US Army, CIA, FBI and NSA. Even the White House is a Mac friendly place now.

I think people are starting to see Microsoft for what they are. A monopoly who force their poorly coded or non standards software on you to force you to buy their other software if you wish to remain compatible. Their vendor lock in has stiffled innovation and growth in the industry, most notably the web. Their plan worked too well and now it's biting them in the ass lol. Their lock in has left them with IE6, which means each new version can't really be super standards compliant even if they wanted it to be because of their ties with their other tech that relies on their proprietary code and their versions of stuff (like ActiveX and their DOM).

I don't get why people use w3schools as a benchmark for browser share. Their figures are based only on the browsers used to access their website. Other benchmarks use a combination of widely used sites and calculate an average.

Anyone try the IE9 beta?
Finally they've acknowledged the fact that standards are to be followed.

Even though I probably won't use Internet Explorer 9 instead of Firefox or Chrome this makes living a lot easier for web designers.

The new 64-bits Flash Player plugin beta looks very nice aswell, it works for the new Firefox 4.0 beta 64-bits builds, 64-bits Internet Explorer 7 and 8 and the new Internet Explorer 9 beta 64-bits.

Yep, 10.62 is fantastic, and is my primary browser under windows and linux. I've been a dyed in the wool opera user since v3, it's amazing how many browser innovations they pioneered.

I don't care what they do with IE; I'm still not going to use it. Plus the name Internet Explorer sounds stupid and old. I mean who actually says they surf or explore the internet anymore?

Still use Internet Explorer. I havent really felt the need to get another one, as this hasnt failed me yet. I used Mozilla Firefox a few years ago when we had an older pc, which for some reason gave problems when using IE but i havent bothered to install it on the new one.

Firefox plus Ad Block Plus, No Script and Better Privacy. Now I don't worry about scripts being installed and running in the background and pesky pop ups or ads bothering my porn viewing experience.

I know right, nothing worse than having to stop masturbating to close a pop-up ad!

:p

Probably a buggy addon/plugin. Try removing some and see if it helps.

Now I'm using the Firefox 4 beta. Liking it so far. Good performance, starts up real fast and the interface is better.

And for my Android phone I'm using the Dolphin HD web browser. It recently got an update with a good performance boost, but it's still sluggish at times so I think it needs more work. It's the closest you can get to Firefox on Android, with support for addons like Adblock Plus.

The main reason I use it it because there's a "Desktop toggles" switch you can get as an addon that lets you easily switch between mobile and desktop sites. Useful for sites that don't give you an easy way to switch.

Also, when you need to conserve bandwidth you can browse the mobile sites. When you've got plenty of bandwidth (Wi-Fi or data plan) you can take full advantage of the web with the desktop sites.
