Moders etc. should be able to charge for their work IMO

Recommended Posts

I feel that moders and custom mission makers should be able to charge a nominal fee for their time and effort if they so chose.

BIS left out or buggered up so many aspects (why else would ACE 2 be so anticipated?) that the community has to repair / include that I feel they should be rewarded for their time and effort.

I know that right now that probably goes against BIS's EULA but the reality is that these people are actually polishing a diamond in the rough.

Some games do allow a "developer" to charge for their work (FSX comes to mind off hand) so why not BIS? It's a win win for them as the third party developers simply make the game more enjoyable and thus players are more likely to recommend it to their friends.

These fees don't have to be (and shouldn't be) outlandish..in the $5 - $10 neighborhood I would think and could be voluntary if the developer so chooses.

I can think of nothing but good from this as it would encourage people to develop quality addons and they could be remunerated for their time and effort for improving the basic game.

I vote no,modders mod at their own will.

Which, given the recent popularity of leaking betas/pre release, many mod makers are losing the will to make addons.

I vote no at charging for addons, but I vote yes for better pbo protection - if a modder wants to release something, but does not want others poking around in their source code, they should be free to protect it.

Hmm, I think your idea is great but it doesn't seem you have this thought through.

Paying modders for their time to create mods?

Paying modders for their finished mods?

Nah, somehow I don't think so.. The only way that sounds at least a little reasonable is for BIS to announce something like "An annual mod competition" where they would announce the (three?) best mods (possibly in a category "player's choice" and "developer's choice") and awarded the modders with some money and "BIS Approved mod" status (possibly in an exchange of allowing BIS to use their idea/codes or allowing them to put it on the game discs as "Best community mods")

This is copyright issues, unless BIS just doesn't give a crap, but modders do recieve fame and they got work to put in a portfolio which could land you a nice paying job. :)

Modding by definition, is done by the community for the community without any money involved.

If they want to charge for their work they should become game developers.

As a modder myself, having to pay for other mods would turn me off. I get my kicks by the amount of free awesomeness I can get, and my thanks for this generosity is that I make my own mods and supply them to anybody, free of charge. In a way, that's my "price" :)

Plus, once you start charging for addons, you have a responsibility to each person who's paid for it ;) I cannot be bothered endlessly tailoring my mods for people's various tastes and expectations. I make them primarily for myself :D

I think that if a modder is serious about what they do then setting up a website to distribute their work with a "donations greatfully received" tab on it is an easy thing. Actually charging a flat fee for a mod is a surefire way to make sure you don't get any downloads.

Somehow i dont think that should really be an issue overall I have seen people modding peoples mods for ages and hell I been the one modding someone elses mod to more to my fitting in some cases.

This mentality thats no one can mod it is kinda disturbing if they try and claim they totally made it then I can see a problem.

IMO that sort of goes against the community spirit. I know that, without the community spirit, my own mods would not even exist. And in the same vein of community spirit, people are welcome to look at my source code for whatever they can get out of it, as long as the source code in my mod remains intact.

The original content i.e. the images, sounds, models etc, are slightly different. They belong to the originator. The method with which they are used however does not.

IMO natch ;)

I really vote NO...

What I see here in this great comunity is players helping players, helping the comunity with addons, fixes, missions etc...And for what i've been seeing, they do it because they like it, because they feel part of the comunity and want to help, not to get money from it....

No. he only plays with real flesh boomsticks. :bounce3:

on a more serious note. I am with DM on this issue. Modders who dont want to share the source files of their creations should be better protected by both technology and actions of the bis forums team.
