Hi everyone,

we've been getting lots of requests recently over at tacticsboard.com to create an ARMA2 tactics pack to work with our web based solution for the arma2 community.

i'm just following this up atm, and want to understand if the requests are valid enough for us to spend our time and effort in devoping this.

Our solution today enables teams/unite/squads (not clans bcos i understand that word is banned here! :) ) to create a secure online team tacticsboard to develop strategies and tactics for use on the battlefield in realtime.

Its being used very effectively in many games by many many teams across the world right now so i thought our 1st port of call would be to ask the community who play this awesome game properly weather you think its a worthwhile exersize?

any thoughts would be great.

thanks for reading this and i hope we can learn from your comments.

regards

Millzee

tacticsboard.com

(I suspect its ok to post the link at the start of the thread, seeming that theres an insert link button available?) if not then i appologise.

I approve. Training for small groups of ArmA2 players for somewhat advanced tactics can take an unfortunate amount of time and coordination. Being able to do several top down run throughs in a web client can be faster, take less attendance, and encourage the top down picture style thinking.

Is it possible to "multiplay" these tacticsboards?

Firstly, thankyou for your response,

In terms of multiplay. you and your team can stay connected to your tacticsboard for as long as you need to be while you are playing your game. Performance isnt hindered because your only using your web browser. (IE/FF/GC)

We are also working on a playxpert widget right now to enable the tacticsboard to be viewed in game on an overlay. We've had great feedback from xfire (matt gillman) who is also keeping me posted on xfire's in game browser developments.

we are releasing a multipage strategy builder into the engine as well, this is in Q&A right now and should be released in the next cpl of weeks all being well. What this does is allow you to build multi page strategies into a single strategy file so you can flick forward and backwards as you advance in the game (or retreat) which is purposely built for OF2. The feature will be available to admin/leaders only so they can stay in contro of the scenario.

hope this answers your question Freerf.

Milzee. Looks very interesting. For anyone else a little confused about what this is, this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0klwJ7tND may be helpful.

Main practical problem I see for you is that Arma2 doesn't tend to have defined maps although there are certainly common play areas. The CTF league I'm involved in (www.armaleague.com) might be interested in using this for map strategies for example.

One of the nice things about Arma2 is also that you you create a free-roaming camera to photograph/observe the game from an elevated position. I wonder if it woudl be possible to integrate this with xFire game streaming and your app to provide true real-time commentary/armchair-quarterbacking on a game in progress ? I would be interested in building in support into my scriptpack if this would be helpful.

Thanks sbsmac,

we can place a map of any size into the app to be roamed around in on the tacticsboard.

You also have the ability to upload your own images as well. As an example, if u are a team leader and you upload an image onto the your team canvas it is presented on the screen of all your members connected to your tacticsboard in an instance. if you (as the leader) then pan around the map or zoom into the map area then again, that is shown on the screen of everyone else connected to your tacticsboard.

basically, what you see as a leader the rest of the team see.

We can create a quick demo tacticsboard for you to play around with if u want?

re pvp, absolutely. sounds very interesting what you are doing!

If you were to make a full screen overlay on the map screen so that you could draw on the map, that would be very impressive. However, I think there would be problems if it weren't build into the game, as the zoom on the map is variable. Maybe a mod that reported coordinates to your overlay program would make it possible though.

Hi,

Weve put the world map onto the demo battlefield 2 tacticsboard for now to see how the realtime engine performes with the large map. (performance is excellent btw)

The map file is called "[ARMA2] - WorldMap" and is seen under the user maps by click file/load map.

if u want to check it out, all you have to do is click on the battlefield 2 public board image on the right hand side of our home page. www.tacticsboard.com

once on there you can play around with the views. (bear in mind the battlefield tactics pack is only a skin for the battlefield game) If this is a goer, then we'll build a front end just for arma.

similar to this:-

OF2_Proto1.jpg

OF2_Proto2.jpg

OF2_Proto3.jpg

Other people may be connected to the demo board while your on there so if u see objects being draw then dont worry.

If you tell us what type of images are beneficial then we'll get them mapped out.

let me know your thoughts.

Millzee.

It's looking good. The link you posted earlier is linked to a Codemasters minigame, when I read the first line "Codemasters have released a minigame", the first thing that popped into my head was "Yes, a minigame called Dragon Rising" ;)
