ArmA2 Project Reality

Whether or not PR is is doing an arma mod I do not know, but more power to them if they are - after all they did do a fine job with the BF2 engine.

However, the notion that we don't need any mods other than ACE, as stated by others in this thread, I find mildly suicidal. Good as it may be, one mod to rule them all will just breed overspecialization and death to the mod (not modding) community within our little family here.

In a perfect world ACE2 might be able to cater for your every desire, maybe through modularity. But more likely, they will have to limit themselves to doing specific things - after all they are just one mod team, so it can not be expected of them to cater for every whim in the community.

What I am saying here is that it is good to have a little choice for the consumer, and equally good to have a little friendly competion for the developers of the mods. One mod to rule them all wouldn't be a good thing.

You are quite free to state it - But no need to be petty about the matter, you have your opinion, everyone in this topic has. That doesn't need one needs to express it, it certainly does not entail that one has to act like a fanboy about it. "I hope they stay far away from ArmA", it sounds like you expect PR to steal your women and your cleaning jobs.

I say it once again, the self proclaimed maturity of this community and some of it's long term members is evidently something that is liable to be thrown out of the window at the mere mention of a BF2 mod making it's way into ARMA 2. There is no need to "protect" this community from modmakers, of any kind. Quite the opposite, I have had alot of fun with modifications that are far removed from the touted and much acclaimed realism that prompted me to buy this game in the first place (for example LEGAwarz and so on)

There is however reason to think about what one will accomplish by whinging at the potential forming of a modification that might, just might, improve the game in one aspect or another. Imagine if this would have been the attitude when ACE was announced, hard to imagine, but please, do try. Creativity, no matter to what ends it is employed will never harm this game, nor it's community. At the very worst, it will make no difference to the way it's played, at the very best, it will give us a new perspective upon playing it.

No matter if the source is reliable or not (as in if it will ever happen that PR dev will come to mod for A2), it can't do any harm to any of you who are opposing it. The modding community will never grow if you are holding against certain individuals for trying to get the most out of a flowed game.

PLUS, you can't make A2 behave like BF2 in the first place. It's really hard (or well, dumb) to make A2 worse.

So whatever it will be, i will always support modding communities, new or old.

Anyways, just to contradict myself a little bit (that's what happens when you only have a Mk 2 brain - you end up arguing with your own posts) I have seen several mods do exactly the same theme in the past, and that kinda hurts a little.

If a mod has a theme of its own I can see the point, but for three different teams to be working on the ultimate realism mod or the ultimate iraq war mod or what have you, just seems a bit of a waste really. From the perspective of an end user, I'd much rather see people put their egos aside and team up when doing so seems prudent.

On topic, wouldn't a Project Reality mod for ArmA 2 just remove some of the reality? I havn't played PR myself but from videos it seems alot less realistic than ArmA 2.

I'm pretty sure the "less realistic" feeling of PR is caused by the limitations of the BF2 engine and they'd love to do something closer to ArmA/ACE if it would be possible. In fact, you can check their suggestions list (the ones marked in red can't be implemented in the BF2 engine)... you'd be surprised how many of them are in ArmA already.

As I said, all I'd like to see right now is a permanent server running Devastation (preferably on ACE2) and enforcing as many anti-griefing rules as possible (by means of admins or scripts)... I'm willing to bet that once you start this snowball the rest will come by itself.

It is a shame that CM butchered the game. One guy that used to work for ACE has left ACE and joined CSP "combat simulation project", good luck waiting for the tools.

OFP, ArmA, and ArmA2 have always been FPS games. Don't sugarcoat them with bullshit just because you don't want them associated with any other games of the genre. As for ArmA2 being the worst? Thats entirely subjective and though I should respect that person's opinion, I do find it stupid as there are much worse games out there in the FPS genre, many of them with nowhere near the replayability as BIS's games have had.

This is getting funny. I love reading posts by the ArmA fanboys who are so obsessed with it. Don't get me wrong, the original OFP, ArmA, and ArmA2 are great. However, OFP-DR will have the ability to be more realistic than any BIS game simply because of the engine. Right now in ArmA2 if you shoot a humvee in the door enough times it will blow up, lol. IS THAT REALISTIC?

There are modding tools that will be available for OFP-DR. I don't care what the community manager posts in the forums, we have other sources, but you can believe whatever you want.

Back on topic. Project Reality did wonders for BF2. As stated previously, if you've never played it and are making assumptions then you are just a fool. As said by a great a great commander "Assumption is the mother of all f**k ups".

i agree, PR did wonder to BF2, and PR on Arma2 should be easier to implement because the foundation is there, not like you're starting from scratch like BF2, just my opinion.

hmmm, right now, you can mod everything to be damaged only by certain types of calibers.

to do a parallel with the OFP:DR you baking up, right now, if you look really hard at a medical bag, you get patched up...and all by yourself....

SO please, stop comparing grapes with carrots, not gonna work...

I've seen entire buildings go down from small arms fire. As for your second comment about the medical bag. I have no idea what you mean, try to type it in better english.

he's referring to a recent gameplay vid from OFP2 showing, among other things, an SP mission where if you get hit, you take out a medical bag and hold it up infront of your face and you are healed.

Arcadey? Yes...

Will I still play it? Absolutely... :)

Kind of like in ArmA when you select to heal in the action menu and you are magically all better. How is that not arcadey? Furthermore, in OFP-DR, once you get shot, you never get back to full health. You can stop the bleeding and stuff, but it's not like ArmA where you get shot and then magically heal yourself back to brand new condition.

I have just a few word to the magical healing...

ACE Mod, u can stop the bleedind with a bandage and try a morphine to make the pain go away for a while!

But without a medic you will be all screwed up.

But I just dont see the point of coming to A2 when you have the will and support of creating your own game from scratch I mean honestly I would do that and take the chance of becoming the next big studio than being a mod studio. I mean they can take there wants for PR2 and go far beyond A2 or OFP with a engine. I mean grab some college students(who major is the game industry profession such as myself) and get a engine and BAM you got yourself a AAA team that can go far. So if in one hand i have a engine and the other I have A2 or OFP-DR or BF2. Which would the obvious man choose.

I think you're arguing for argument's sake. The said gameplay video made me want to try DR. Why do you care if I believe something is or isn't arcadish if it doesn't influence my desire to play?

On the original topic, I'd like to say that I'd be interested to see what a PR mod could bring to Arma2. It's not like it can hurt to have a larger choice of high quality mods.

As for the whole Arma2 vs. OFPDR mud flinging, can't we keep that to the off topic section?

no it's not bullshit but let me turn the table! Have you played it? i'm by no means trying to compare OFPDR with ArmA2 in fact i wanted something to compete neck/neck with arma2, and i think CM made more damages to this game than good for the PC version "missing features and arcadish look/feel". Heck i pre-ordered the game but cancelled from amazon once i learned that no confirmation on modding tools as when to become available for the CPS team.

I'd love to see PR come to ArmA2 but i think ACE guys have more experience working with arma and they'll probably do a better job.
