At least the mods here don't hand out infractions for having an opinion that differs from theirs.

He handed out infractions for that? Oh damn...

No comment . . . :j:

I've seen some other actions by moderators in the Codemasters forums that I don't agree with. However, it's rare to visit a forum where I don't disagree with some moderator actions.

Mmmh... i had the exact same feeling while looking at your sig...how can you mod a game that doesn't exist...

It really surprises you ? i'm not judging their mod. but for example Insurgency, which is so far maybe the best mod on the source engine, is in devellopment since 2002. 2 years before Hl2 was released.

Modding is not only about tweaking an engine, i'm sure you know that.

This is their take on FLIR with the Javelin. To be honest I have no idea if this is realistic, but it looks good. The Javelin sight doesn't look to bad either and i would really like to see this put offically into Arma 2 soon.

But as for functionality we don't know how realistic it'll be.

Looks good to me.

I'd like to see this in ArmA 2 also.

Wow, shiny shine. Usually the tank isn't all boiling hot, just the part around the engine and the main gun after firing, but even steel beasts hasn't warming/cooling built in. Maybe i can take a screenshot in steel beasts later to show you what i mean.

But its a nice feature nonetheless.

It's a good start but I wouldn't call it realistic, the tanks heat signature is too high and the surrounding area, terrain and sky have no signature variation whatsoever.

It is good for an early WIP but there is still much to be done.

As for FLIR in general Arma2 already has it and in a good realistic-ish manner, the only problem is that it is only being used on the UAV currently.

Are you really that stupid? Did you not make a post about what the moderators in the Codemaster forums do? Did I not respond with an agreement that the moderators in the Codemaster forums do things I don't agree with?

Interesting. Functionality wise it's fine, although it doesn't actually look right.

The environment has no heat signature whatsoever, it's just in black and white with the lighting fixed and shadows disabled.

Still, it's good enough to be used for it's purpose. It's not any worse than the one in ArmA 2 that's done with post-processing. But far from what VBS2 has.

To be honest I think Arma2's FLIR has something the VBS2 VTK doesn't. Granted vehicle signature is probably better if you watch the video's you will notice the surrounding terrain doesn't have much of any heat signature, everything sticks out.

Now thats not to say Arma2's is perfect, it still needs some work but it so far has a pretty good working if you compare it to real footage and imagery.

However I think the only real way to make vehicles and infantry have a good accurate FLIR signature (to some extent) would be 'mask' textures, which DR seems to be doing here, it just needs a bit more fine tuning around key points.

If they can find a way to make certain areas appear hotter than others that would be great. As Serc pointed out, some areas should certainly glow more than others. Some of the best simulation is in the COD4 AC-130 mission and in Steel Beasts Pro.

Yes to give COD4 some credit that AC-130 mission was shockingly lifelike.

I am certainly not stupid.

I'm not sure. It sounds like you were saying it's par for the course, which sounds like apologia.

I've been getting in fractions at the CM forums just for putting the lies straight about arma2.

I don't think Viiiper liked it too much when I made a video proving that 'red barrels' in arma1 or arma2 were not like the arcade ones in OFP-DR.

Ever since then, every chance he gets it's like, why are you here etc, then the infractions.

I've told him several times I will be buying OFP-DR for the PS3, which I will, but I see no reason for absolute lies to go around, when I put people straight, he doesn't like it.

They moved the Arma2 thread to off-topic in some obsure part of the website, it must have been a pain to see more/posts views on the Arma2 thread than almost anything else in the OFP-DR forum :)

The move took place just before the demo release of Arma2, the excuse given whay should they have a game in off-topic that wasn't releated to OFP-DR fair enough, they never moved all the other game threads.

Even with the thread hidden away, they are keeping a very close watch on it and no doubt when I post again I'll be getting more infractions.

I dono if i'll get OFP: DR on PC or the Xbox 360. I dont really game on the xbox anymore, the only thing i play is halo 3 (massive halo fan since halo 1). On the other hand my 8800GT 512mb prolly wont be able to run the game on highest setting, but my Xbox 360 will run the game and it will look fantastic like always.

Hmmph.

What about everything else in ArmA2 that explodes when you shoot it enough times? If you shoot a humvee in the door enough times in ArmA2 it will explode, lol. Don't get me wrong, I love ArmA2, but the exploding red barrels arguement isn't a good one considering the amount of things that explode in ArmA2 if you shoot them enough. That's one thing I'm looking forward to in OFP2. The damage model isn't based on hit points like in ArmA2.

That Viiiper guy is really annoying. He goes way overboard trying to prove he knows something about whatever topic might be up for discussion. It's really hilarious sometimes.

He has been arguing just today about night vision with people who actually use it in the Army or whatever.

He's a specialists in that area or so he says, so noone is getting a word in.

No idea why he brought up the red barrels, but I was more than happy to put that one away.

Where's the proof? I've seen almost everything explode in the videos OFP2 provided so far.

And no, humvees don't explode, they catch fire.

It's their forum mate, they are at liberty to do what they please with it.

They didn't delete the thread and they could have.

Personally I think Vipers moving of the thread and clear annoyance has rather a lot more to do with his treatment in this thread, and the treatment in this thread of other people who have expressed excitement for OpF2. Trolling OpF2 is condoned in this thread. More than condoned, it's encouraged.

There is no big conspiracy about demo releases, ill will breeds ill will. That's all.

I think that's more of a bug/engine problem as opposed to a deliberate decision to appeal to the COD crowd (and I'm pretty sure I saw a Moderator on the OFP-DR forum say that the red barrels were as much). Its the thought that counts...

Not really. I could care less about the "thought" when playing. When something happens it happens. Doesn't make it any better, but that's off topic.

I spent some time today, being off work, watching some OFP:DR videos and reading up on it.

I wouldn't compare it to COD, but more to the the Brothers in Arms series. In fact it seems they hocked the entire control and suppression system from that game. The movement system is straight from BIA, with the select and click to move to cover circle, etc. The combat seems to be similiar as well, where suppression and moving from cover to cover, while flanking, seem to be the way to play. Not necessarily realistic at times, but it is fun and the firefights are prolonged and intense usually.

The first 2 BIA games were well made and carried good stories. The combat was gritty and felt right. Nowhere near the run and gun craziness of COD, which I don't find fun at all. If DR can replicate what BIA had, which was fun with doses of realism, and it appears that is what they are going for, I'll probably buy it. I'm certainly not expecting it to be ultra-realistic though.
