Win2k and ofp

Recommended Posts

Nope, I used OFP with Windows 2000 for many months before upgrading to XP Professional.

OFP V1.00 had a problem with a black screen immediately after the game loaded, but the only problem remaining with Windows 2000 and Windows XP that I am aware of is that some people get two mouse cursors when the game loads. For some this only happens when using the -nosplash switch, but in all cases it can be fixed by Alt-TABing to the desktop and back into OFP.

I only encountered that issue when setting resolution beyond 1024x768.

It works ok with win2k.

The most dangerous times are starting the game...and exiting the game.

Starting OFP: you may have 2 cursors, and also you might not get any sound until you press alt tab...then the sound comes back incredibly loud tounge.gif

Oh and if you run zonealarm, close it before playing a multiplayer game otherwise OFP will not quit, and youll blue screen smile.gif

I was running the free version of ZoneAlarm under Windows 2000, and never experienced the lockup problem you mentioned. And that was on a dual-CPU motherboard as well, something that ZoneAlarm is supposed to have problems with.

I guess I'm just lucky. biggrin.gif

Probably.

Over my OFP time ive had new motherboards, new CPUs, new graphics cards etc

and ive always had the lockup.

until one day someone told me to try it with zonealarm disabled and it worked. Zonelabs know about this problem, its in their FAQ.

The only problem I am aware of is that the ZoneAlarm dialog pops up under the OFP full-screen window, giving the impression that the system is hung.

There are several workaround for this, the easiest being the addition of

-window -x=640 -y=480

to the OFP command-line; this will cause the game to run in the upper-left portion of the screen, allowing you to configure ZoneAlarm when the dialog pops up.

If there are lockup problems even after ZoneAlarm is configured (and reconfigured when a patch is applied, since the program signatures change with every patch!wink.gif, then you will indeed have to disable or uninstall ZoneAlarm.

Same thing has started happening to me since 1.46...

It used to lock up on exit game (alt tab, end process), then it didnt do it at all under 1.45 for some reason.. Now it does it most of the time under 1.46..

That zonealarm is real pain.. I even tried lowering security settings to low and running ofp.. Then at random times during mp games I get blue sceen of death "Process has locked pages..." Now I have to completely close Zonealarm to play ofp.. (And yet other games seem fine.. weird)

I hope Zonelabs release some kind of patch for it, as I don't really like closing down completely and leaving my pc open to attack.. I see they've not mentioned any known issues with Zonealarm Pro? smile.gif

Anyone use BlackIce Defender btw? I was thinking of trying that out instead (but it isnt free I believe...)

There's a new free software-based firewall out called Outpost which is chock-full of features.

I haven't used it myself and just learned about it, but if you are unhappy with ZoneAlarm, you may want to give this a try.

http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

Besides having all of the features of products like ZoneAlarm, Sygate, and Black-Ice Defender, this product also handles browser popups, spam, ads etc.
