Civilian vehicle threat indication

Is it possible to affect the AI's ability to determine whether or not a civilian vehicle contains opposing units?

When playing as USMC, OPFOR forces will unconditionally open fire on commandeered civilian helicopters before they could possibly have had any chance to identify a threat.

It seems like it'd be trivial to limit threat identification to a small radius for the AI when considering given classes of vehicles (in other words, the AI has to get close enough to see that the driver is actually an enemy unit).

hehe same question I was thinking.

Set the vehicle to captive, enemy will completely ignore it, and it`s passengers. Then place a trigger around the area you want, if vehicle enters area, remove captive, enemy will fire at you.

But not able to work out the code for removing captive at present. Or maybe a better way?

Thanks for that, I'll certainly try it.

Is it possible to do this in the general case or will that involve patching the game?

I've barely had the game a week, I'm not familiar with the program or how much of the environment is hardcoded.
