M1A2 Tank Firing

The guys at Codemasters made a very nice video of the M1A2 Tank firing 2 rounds, and then played a slow mo clip of the firing animation.

Problem is, the video was CGI Animation, and somehow the crew reloaded 2 rounds in 4 seconds. Here is the video:

Well, i made my own video. Except this is ingame footage, and the Tank reload time is much closer to real life.

I just think its nice sometimes to show that Arma 2 really does include those little details that make oh so much difference :)

I don't realy know how it works and if the Abrams are able to do something like, but i've seen a real video from a friend serving in the swiss Army who had shown a "system override" with an mobile Artillery. They had shut down the security mechanism so that the Arty was able to fire a three-shot salve.

I was impressed and had to watch the video some times before i could believe it.

Tanks have 2 methods of firing, automatic, and manual. Automatic consists of a computer doing the work, manual consists of a human. Tests showed humans could load a round in 7-8 seconds, whilst computers could only do 12-15 seconds.

So although you have a good point, tanks can't fire that quickly.

US tests? What kind of slowass firing system do they have? In Sweden we had the S-tank (the modern eqvivalent of the Jagdpanther) that automatically loaded in 5-6 seconds... In the 1970s.

I may be wrong, but i am pretty sure that where i read from was correct. Look it up and see, i really am not positive.

Well you can look at wikipedia (bad source I know, someone might find another):

A modern autoloader for a 120–125 mm caliber weapon in good condition can achieve about 10–12 rounds per minute.

That's 5-6 seconds.

Ah ok, fair enough :)

Even so, thats in tip top condition, and Dragon rising was 3-4 seconds :p

Didn't see that one coming. Just like the other times it did the same thing.

Nice work, Richie!

Does A2 have frustrating bugs/ performance issues? Yes. But I also think it will age like a fine wine while OFP2 will be a flash in the pan.

I haven't played it in a week or so while I eagerly await the next patch. But today my nephew was over and wanted to see the game. So I booted it up and started a scratch "combat" scenario...and was having a blast. I love that part of the game (I hope someday that it will also be able to create quick armor and aircraft-based missions, too.) Point is: problems? Yes. But a ton of good things, too!

What you need in the new German :

from Wikipedia (also seen on Future Wepaons Show) The Panzerhaubitze 2000 ("Armoured howitzer 2000"), abbreviated PzH 2000, is a German 155 mm self-propelled howitzer developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall for the German Army. The PzH 2000 is one of the most powerful conventional artillery systems currently deployed. It is particularly notable for a very high rate of fire; in burst mode it can fire three rounds in 9 seconds, ten rounds in 56 seconds, and can fire between 10 and 13 rounds per minute continuously, depending on barrel heating.

Its been in service since 2006 and since then it has been used regularly in support of coalition troops in Uruzgan province in Afghanistan.

Now that is some rapid fire :D

I feel bad for people who cannot get over the fact that OFP2 isn't developed by BiS and it's not going to be realistic.

How do you make the hand held camera effect?

I just used a simple wiggle expression in after effects :) I am not really advanced enough to know anything else hehe.

It is a lot difference to load a old 105 mm tank, my loader in an old Centurion tank loaded at 3,2 seconds with Sabot. That is impossible with a 120mm because of the weight and also the handling of the rounds with seperate ammo storage and blastdoors that has to be shut when firing the main gun. Believe that 7-8 seconds is a very good loading time for a 120mm tank

Why didn't I think of that? -.-

I've seen a few videos of ArmA 2, with hand held cameras. Used ages to figure out the scripting function to do it.

Didn't think about just doing it in After Effects, rofl.

seriously though, nice vid, I'm gonna have to show this to my old clan and prove to them that ArmA 2 > OFP DR... (Right now I'm trying to convert them from Joint Operations Typhoon Rising to ArmA 2, and it's been a cake walk for those who actually tried it, as the 2 main people I got to try it LOVED ArmA 2, but there are still those who resist bothering....)
