timmy 0 Posted March 16, 2002 my dog was barking and i heard a lound noise, so i went outside expecting to see some big lowflying cargo plane, but i was suprised at what i saw. I saw 3 choppers flying fairly low and very fast. It was just light enough to see them and i am pretty sure they were apaches or somthing very similar. I havent ever seen a group of choppers flying by, espically not army choppers, i wonder whats up.
Tovarish 0 Posted March 16, 2002 Lol don't worry no one's attacking.Probably just a training exercise. When I went to visit family in Miami a few years back I saw a bunch of Hueys in formation a couple of times. When I lived in Cuba I used to see MiG-21's flying around all the time (they only use those as trainers these days as far as I know), and here in Canada you see the odd F-18 once in a while, and the Snowbirds. KingBeast 0 Posted March 16, 2002 I would have been reaching for my trusty Strela if I saw 3 Apaches fly by

Assault (CAN) 1 Posted March 16, 2002 Cool, one time an Army 'Griffon' chopper landed in my school's football field. It was part of a recruitment drive.
Warin 0 Posted March 16, 2002 Shame about the ESD on those Griffin helicopters. Gotta love government boondoggles! ESD=Electrostatic Discharge Basically, the rotor wash creates huge amonts of static electricity and unless the helo grounds, youcan be zapped on disembarking. They eventually fixed it by adding 'wicks' that hang under the fuselage and ground the helicopter from a meter or so up, so troops can offload without the helo having to touch down during rapid deployment. Just so employees at a helicopter plant in Quebec could have more work. Bleah. edit: I need to proofread more

I know what you mean though, the Griffon is a civie helicopter with green colours on it. The skids have to be replaced as well, they are self leveling and not fixed, so when troops stand on them they move. Tyler
Warin 0 Posted March 16, 2002 Yeah... BUT The venerable Twin Huey has very low levels of ESD compared to the Griffin. Â And the skids are also not rated for the weight required for fully loaded troops to stand on during insertions. Â IE.. 4 fully armed troops on each skid exceeded the 414kg limit, and the helo became unstable. They (427 Squadron) managed a fix by adding a step on the fuselage that fixed it. I dont know if there is an upgraded skid assembly from Bell now or not. I guess I am just railing against political expediency putting people in danger. Â Especially the dedicated folks in the Canadian Forces. Â Heaven knows they are already hobbled by a totally nasty budget. Â Know what I mean? Â

ralphwiggum 6 Posted March 16, 2002 About a week after 9-11, I saw 4 F18s flying over my former high school, in formation. The closest air base is at a desert north of us(Edwards Airbase), so I think it was from there. However, the jets were coming from south, and turned sharply to west, where LA international Airport was. So i'm guessing they were on patrol. I think it was unusual that those jets were flying at such low altitute. and today, they had Missile Defense system test, and everyone in LA(even OC county) could see the path of missile in the sky. Hilandor 1 Posted March 16, 2002 yeah we got a squadron of apaches in scotland atm, on training at leuchars air base, seemingly uk is thinking of buying them.
christophercles 0 Posted March 16, 2002 I live near an airforce airfield, so we get f-111's, blackhawks, chinooks, hercules & all sorts of aircraft flying over. During the airshows, we get lots of american planes and other foriegn planes flying over. The day after i went to the airshow, standing out in my backyard, i saw a b52 flying around. DaCrytter 0 Posted March 16, 2002 We get the occasional Tornado or Harrier over our way. More normally though all we get to see is the odd Fat Albert (Hercules or C-130 to those who don't know RAF lingo). But when I was younger, we used to live near RAF Waddington. Which was where a large number of Vulcans were based. Used to see them all the time. Big, graceful, but above all, f***ing noisy!
christophercles 0 Posted March 16, 2002 Oh and we also get vampires flying over our house, damn they are cool looking

DaCrytter 0 Posted March 16, 2002 Back in my school days we usued to have to line up outside the gym changing rooms before going in. Pigeons used to sit on the roof, and hang there asses out over then end. My mate made the mistake of looking up once. And recieved a present in the eye from a pigeon
PHY_Hawkeye 0 Posted March 16, 2002 Here in Belfast I see HELOs every day, Pumas', Lynxs' and Gazells'. Saw a flight of F-3 Tornados once. Also we are close to RAF Aldergrove, during wartime, like for example the "Gulf War", if your lucky you can hear USAF B-52s ferrying over from the states, they refuel at Aldergrove I think. You never see them because they fly so high.
LordZach 0 Posted March 16, 2002 saw a B-17 once too but it cost 1k to take a ride and waaaaaaaay too expensive for me
