PvP servers (or lack thereof)

The HOLD multiplayermode I'm referring to in this thread is the one where you start at the so-called X-Ray flag, 1 on the red side and 1 on the blue side, and then u have to fight your way to the other flags in between, usually Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo and Foxtrot, each one has to be captured in alphabetical order (and in opposite directions of course) by staying in that particular area with more players than the opponent has in that same area. The team with the greatest number of captured flags is the winner. You can choose your inventory in the weaponscrates and save that inventory for the rest of the game if u want.

So it's a very straightforward gamemode with large but not enormous maps which encourages teamwork and really is great fun.

I have started a few threads to discuss this item and I have replied to some threads started by others but so far without any real result.

Today is the second day in a row (and there were many days before) that there is JUST 1 server that is running HOLD, the strictly no ai mode I like most by far. This server was exremely laggy though.

A long list of COOP servers is on every night.

On some evenings there are a few nice hold-servers to be found, but the sad thing is that although they are always full (!) when they are running, the next few days they are nowhere to be found, disappeared into I don't know where...

I have seen loads of people remark (in-game and on this forum) that they too like this gametype the most of all, but still there are just a few servers running it, if any at all.

What you do find, however, are some of the so called Berzerk servers, a somewhat similar, but according to me and many others far less fun gametype, to hold.

I am really curious to find out what the exact reason is that although many people can't stop saying that they like HOLD so much better than the rest of the gametypes there still are so few of them, let alone ones that are running lag-free...

Not not berzerk, there are enough berzerk servers compared to the mode windowlicker talks about.

The game mode he's talking about is AAS (Advance And Secure)

And yes lately people jump on berzerk servers primarily

It was the same in ArmA1

Other than the extremely limited weapon selection and different GUI, is there any noticeable difference between the "regular" AAS to Berserk?

Anyway, my main problem with both of these missions is the distance you have to travel all the time - at least on most maps (some were nice and close together). This is especially a problem on servers without a lot of players.

Its a shame that arma2 is just full of just "one missioned servers"

I find Domination and Evolution COOP maps just bland gametypes with the majority of the servers have no admins and people dont co operate with eachtoher, sure im not bringing down the designers of the missions but what has come out of them and the popularity surrounding these missions just doesnt give any other map makers / pvp gametypes a chance to shine and the true capability of arma2 pvp.

We need the good old Hold (or capture and hold i prefer to call it), CTF and King of the Hill maps to be in circulation again then the MP community will see a more enjoyable and challangable way to play arma2.

I used to enjoy playing the ECL league maps when they were out, some of the gametypes they came up with are being used today such as windowlicker said about the "progressive C&H" in the AAS maps

Berzerk is BF2-assault-like, you can take any zone at any time.

AAS is sequenced, you must take zones in order. It focuses more the fight than spreading it like Berzerk.

And strangely enough, contrary to what one could thought seeing you can unlock a situation in Berzerk by simply going capping a far away zone, you don't witness in AAS a situation often seen in Berzerk : 1 team locked out in main spawn for most of the map because the other team capped all the intra zones and is camping them no end (though breaking such lock is a nice challenge)

For a simple reason : capping all zones in AAS means nearly instant win :)

Our group has a server listing forum that includes all the PVP and TVT gametypes currently available. Feel free to go to http://urclan.org and in the Navigation block there is a Gaming Server Rotation link for that info. Would be nice to see other clans or fan sites do the same. I may look into finding other groups that host PVP games and setup that list somewhere for reference. I believe Silent Warriors are also into PVP, TVT games: http://www.silent-warriors.co.uk/.

AAS is on that list and we love that gameplay as well as Berzerk. We are 100% focussed on this as are other groups. Keep in mind summer is here so gamers are a hit or miss at least on the weekdays. I know of some fun gamers in the UK that want to build up players with our group.

The other thing we like to do is with a decent group of members we can setup either internal locked games or work on some other PVP or an occasional short coop to see how well we can do. Keep on keeping on bro. There are many good experiences yet to come...

we have a hold server up all the time dedicated and noone ever joins it..... i put myself in it when im busy and come back still alone.... It is HOLD 24/7 and can have 64 players..... id love to get it populated but some maps i think are restricted to 32 players and 40 players... still its up all the time and you can vote on which hold mission you want to play....

the ip is 64.85.160.71 :2302 It is called HOLD PvP {S8G}clan any one is invited. if people dont start playing on it we are gonna take it offline. Its been up for a week after endless time of me trying to figure out trying to get the missions onto the server only for it to be dead all the time. So i encourage people to come play and try to populate it. The server is located in michigan for those who are wondering about ping issues. Thanks and i hope i see you on it.

A 0/64 server is a lot more likely to stay that way compared to a 0/10 server, assuming the mission is actually designed for the player limit. Joining an empty 64 server and hoping it starts filling is rather optimistic. Best would be to have an admin that can swap missions and player limit based on demand, but if you can't handle that at least cater your server to the most common type of demand - that is if it's empty most of the time try running missions that work well with less players.

Where's your server located? From Israel I'm getting almost 200ms ping to it so it's a no-go for me. Good European servers give me 100ms ping, and US servers rarely go under ~200-250.

Thanks for your reaction, tonight i will certainly try your server using the IP you gave us, I hope the ping will be ok though...

I also plan on putting in some lower scale A&D maps for times with less people
