1986-Mod (Austrian Armed Forces)

Recommended Posts

So I thought about starting a screening to determine if I can gather a team of modders willing to do the 1986-Mod.

Time: 1986 (hah... You saw that coming.), May and June

Sides: Austria, Soviet/Pact Forces (probably US SOF) (within the framework of an european conflict, WWIII if you want)

Doing research on actual Pact attack doctrines and austrian defense doctrines for more than two years now I think I now have a good picture of how such a campaign would have been executed.

Of course, IRL we would have been unable to mount any considerable opposition against an attack, so I had to discard the reality and instead had to create a new one - you have never seen a Bundesheer like this.

So, in case you are interested in bringing back the old OFP-Feeling (and are able to do so!), but this time without M1s and without fighting on an island in the Paclantic Ocean, feel free to contact me (you will get some more infos then).

Oh, Austrians/Germans preferred. Makes communication a lot easier - even more so since the mod would be in German.

This sounds interesting, what happened in 1986?

Nothing, actually.

But with the events in 1985 and 1986 (Chernenkos death, ASAT, Geneva Summit, Challenger, Mir, Chernobyl...) this makes (with the appliance of some artistic freedom at least) for a quite decent backstory - something which most other games that portait a fictive World War III suck at.

Granted, there would have been many other opportunities for war breaking out in Europe during the Cold War, but during most of the time NATO ground forces would have been a mere nuisance to the Soviet - not something to worry about. This started to change only in the late 70s/early 80s, so the 80s are a natural choice for an interactive version. It wouldn't be fun to try fighting the Soviets with odds so heavily biased as up until 1980.

Wow, an Austrian Mod?

Unbelieveable, I am waiting for something like that since OFP times. Unfortunately, the only thing I can contribute is mission editing.

Cheers

Mathias

I am missing the austria contet since OFP :)

Too bad, you located the mod in 1986, because the A1 FFAA mod includes an Ulan, which needs a bit tweaking to get the austria look ;)

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to see some austria equipment :yay:

Acutally, it would be somewhat different to what you would probably expect. Although the unarmoured vehicles would be the same as we had in real life (Pinzgauers, Twelve-Eighteens, Twenty-Three-Twenties, Six-Eighties, Puch Gs - they are just to good to not be used; why do you think half of the world is either license building or copying them) the same can not be said for the fighting vehicles. Our Saurers, Kürassiers and Pattons were so painfully obsolete in the 80s that you would have been certified as insane if you ever planned to use them in actual combat (Hehe... like it was with the US Army 10 years earlier -> cannonfodder to the Red Army).

The Bundesheer had no choice as they had nothing more capable/modern at hands - but I have the choice. Thats the new reality I mentioned before.

You meet the most unlikely people here... can't help you really since I can't mod anything. Texturing units might be the easiest part, but weapons and vehicles - outsch. I had a bit of "Austrian Peacekeeping Forces" in OFP way back, but that was also quite a hack job.

Would be cool, but not enough skilled Austrians around to make it happen I'm afraid...
