Bitter Chill-help!!

Recommended Posts

Well, I dunno for other people, but I know for me, the frustrating part about the mission was not a bug, but simply the auto-death trigger that they use if you try to drive directly to Elektrowhatever. I tried to drive the Hummer directly there after the Simmons death scene/NAPA guys, but kept getting blown up by a mysterious rocket about halfway there. The fourth time, I figured out that it was probably auto-death because the Hummer blew up, but behind the "Revert/Teamswitch" screen, I saw the rest of Razor team get out of the blown-up car. :P Later the Novy Sobor guys weren't helpful (because they won't talk to you before 5:00), so I drove an APC there and kept getting killed by a machine gun.

It's simply bad game design. If you didn't help some random priest in the mission before, then the mission is literally just "wait until 5:00, then drive here". Except that they don't tell you that until 5:00, they tell you to get to a place that you can't get to and then magically kill you when you try to go there. At least make it believable - would it have been that difficult to have roving helicopters and lots of enemies in the south? Don't just kill me on a random road in the middle of nowhere - give me a valid reason to believe I should be afraid.

I had Starforce 21 at disposal, it felt SO MUCH MORE LOGICAL to use the chopper... it didn't even occur to me to use the hummer to go to the extract point, but now I understand your furstration.

I agree that the autodeath trigger was out of place in such a game (that's more something you'd expect in Battlefield or Crysis). They played a risky game by sending players on red herrings and decoy objectives and preventing them from doing it with such a blatant method. Lots of frustration in perspective. They should have made it clearer that you should use the chopper, with NAPA car as Plan B.

I have had issues with this mission after talking to Simmons too, (I have the steam version, with improved sound mod)

In Manhattan I helped the Priest.

I killed the guys at the check point on the way back from getting documents and destorying the house in Bitter Chill.

I've tried several different paths.

First I tried using NAPA's help right form the start but eventually the car stops at a church and the driver gets out and just stands by the car. At this point I'am un-able to exit the car with Cooper. (If I switch to another team member I can get out but, I still can't get Cooper to exit). I waited forever sitting in the car but nothing ever happend.

I tried just driving the there but hit the auto-kill line. (Figures the trigger works perfectly every time :P)

I used Starforce 21 last and headed to get NAPA's help, once I reached the NAPA guys in Nova Sobor, I was like teleported way to the south east of the map, ending up in the NAPA safehouse with the SAT phone, I talked to swordfish, but after the cutscene nothing happens. Team will not respond to commands, I can manually control them though. I tried heading out from the safe house but it's tough because night-vision doesnt work after the last cutscene.

Seems like from what I have read in this thread that this is the end of the mission though, I was hesitant to use the end mission command because I was not sure if that was the end. Can anyone confirm that this is it for Bitter Chill?

@Anarkee : Yes, that's the end cutscene.

you're offered to stay in chernarus undercover and then you go on to the next mission

Where are the NAPA or CDF guys in Novy Sobor?

I did NOT help the priest in Manhattan (I reported guns as I had been told that NAPA was likely behind the terrorism in Moscow), so the NAPA guys don't offer to help me after the Saber cutscene. I tried driving to Novy Sobor but could never find any NAPA or CDF, only very hostile Russians with tanks and APCs.

Is it possible to chopper or drive to Novy and find NAPA help?

Found out the problem, if you wait at the FOB, NAPA guys find you and basically procede the mission. SPOILER: You are never meant to get to the southern city. Basically you get the decision to either go find the CDF or NAPA for further help. This misison seams to be the fork in the road of the campaign.

What is fob?? manhattan?

I obviously get the hummer and go to the extraction point which is 9 kms away.

And i always get destroyed by invisble rocket soldiers or invisible snipers.

i spent 5 hours with this mission, one good, and 4 as horrible as it can get. this script killing me without any reason when getting close the extraction point really ruined my day, or rather night. and i know, remembering that i had to give up will make me feal bad the whole week.

this script was really really bad mission design. it shouldnt come as a surprise that many players will choose to get to the extraction themselves. geting them killed by a script without any notification is just horrible, forcing them to try it over and over and over again.

the pattern of death positions didnt even build a trigger shaped form on the map. i only had certainty after sending razor 2 3 and 4 with the car to the EZ, what they did, the script only triggers with the player.

this script also seems to kick in when extracting with starforce 21. it kills the player seemingly random when flying in it. (the crash script only kicks in when battlemage sends the sf21)

Guys, I just finished the mission without a glitch. Once again, there are multiple ways to end it, but here's what I did :

- Got the evidence, blew the house, got the message from sabre and got back to FOB.

- Got the cutscene and was told to get out of the country, so I called the chopper.

- NAPA appeared, but I actually didn't talk to them as the chopper was coming.

- You have some kind of "incident" with the chopper and need to chose between rallying CDF lines or NAPA lines on foot.

- I went for NAPA as it was much closer.

- Crawled in the woods up to the NAPA hideout and that's it.

When I'm done with the campaign, I'll try another way.

I think this the main issue of the campaign.

If you know how to play it properly, no bug or scripting error will appear.

I did the campaign once, encountering some script problems and bugs.

The second time I did the campaign (yesterday), in about 3 hours I arrived at the "Manhattan" mission, with NO problem at all.

My conclusion: the campaign was tested by the developers themselves.

No external and competent beta testers, which probably the first time would have messed with commands/triggers/objective sequence, causing scripting errors and bugs.

In fact the first time you play a mission, you can get confused and "destabilize" the software...:)

I have the exact same problem, I helped the priest previously, and NAPA came at Manhattan and told me to follow them to the car, so I did, we encountered some enemies in the forest and took them out, then got to the car, where they had a little conversation and told us to get in, so we got into the car and.. nothing happens.

You have both got in the trunk of the car, yes? The only way the script will work is if your team gets in the passenger seats, then you go round to the back of the car and get in the trunk.

Yes, I got in the trunk, tried it several times, but it still didn't work.

I called in the chopper and did it that way instead, still, annoying bug.

Yep, agree - yet another one!

Yep, agree - yet another one!

I was quite dissapointed that all that followed was a couple of those base-building missions though, I LOVED the other missions despite the bugs, all that freedom, the feeling of being a small part in a big thing, patrolling the woods, and then you have to take command of everything etc. didn't really like that. :(

I've read through these forums about this mission and I don't think i've read the answer i'm looking for.

Spoiler: I guess this is a spoiler? So, i clear the check point at the bottom of the FOB and meet NAPA at the top after the cinematic. I didn't help our Fyorder and i reported his stash so i'm not on the best terms w/ NAPA I guess. They begin to run south, south west and i follow them for about 4 miles untill we reach this house where they all stop and nothing happens...no car, no dialog, nothing. I tried for 5 hours yesterday to reach electrioahfidhabf but i met that invisible field o' death. Can anyone help? :)

This game (simulation) is the BEST game i've ever played...if it wasn't for some blatant bugs. If you guys work out these development issues I have no doubt you could sweep the realistic FPS market away from everyone as an indy game producer. I'm not saying dumb the missions down per say becuase this game shouldn't appeal to casual gamers but it would be nice if you just took a little more time to work out triggers and stuff. Thanks -Will

Here is where I am at with this mission. I have completed all the available tasks EXCEPT for making it down south to the assembly area (as you can see by my screen shot.) Every time I proceed further south, north, east, west I get taken out by the "invisible RPG".

Any suggestions?

Ya, from what I gather there are a few ways this mission goes down (unfortunately all of them are counter-intuitive and non involve reaching Electozavodsk).

Spoiler: The first few ways i've never tried but, aparently, if you don't report Fyorder then NAPA forces arrive at the FOB and i think they take you off in a red hatchback and the rest of the mission is pretty linear. The second way I have. I reported the NAPA stash and so there was not much NAPA help once they arrived at the FOB so I called in the helicopter (even though they say not to). Shortly after we got shot down by a SAM and, agian, the rest of the mission unfolds pretty straight forward.

Can someone tell me how to insert those cool spoiler tabs!? :)

So I should restart the mission and when I reach the FOB I should sit and wait for NAPA to show up in a red hatchback instead of trying to go south by myself?

How to fix this mission:

1.) Chain the NAPA arrival into the end of the cutscene, so that it's impossible to miss. The first time I played this mission, my squad mates reported "Unknown men in front of us". I was in full escape-and-evade mode at that point, so I got back in the truck and tore off down the hill through the woods without knowing you had to talk to them.

2.) Cancel the "Get to rally point" objective after talking to NAPA. Leaving it as a possible objective only inspires false hope. Instead, if you helped the priest (against orders!) then you go with them and if you turned the priest's cache in, then you get a new waypoint to meet their friends and have to get there on your.

Basically these are the two biggest problems. You don't know what's going on unless you talk to the NAPA guys and it's not guaranteed that the player will, plus, the stated mission objective is completely impossible without giving any indication of being impossible.

In all honesty, this mission would be really fun if it was more user friendly. Unfortunately, Bitter Chill and Delaying the Bear (the one after) seem to be filler missions to move the plot along. On a better note, if you take them in the right light they do a fantastic job of it and the next two missions so far are well worth the few hours spent cursing at the computer. :)

I figured it out after a mission restart. So I was able to progress the campaign further.

My BC experience and Walkthrough:

1. Mission Beginning: As soon as I was able to take control of my squad I had them jump into the Hummvv and we drove directly to the house which was marked on the map.

2. I jumped out of the Hummvv, entered the house, and found the documents laying on a small table in the room on the left. "Find Evidence" and "Secure Documents" objectives.

3. I then planted the satchel charge in the room, then jumped back into the Hummvv.

4. As we drove away I blew the charge. "Destroy house" objective.

5. I then drove directly to the forest/hill opposite the FOB and slowly proceeded down the hill until I was able to take on the enemy forces (safe distance with a height advantage) at the check point leading up to the FOB.

6. After the check point was taken out I then proceeded up the hill to the FOB. A cut scene appears and the "Inspect FOB" objective is accomplished.

7. After the cut scene I then called for a helo for extraction (dont try to proceed by foot or Hummvv you will be taken out along the way by a rogue RPG).

8. After take off and well under way my helo was then taken down by a SAM. Cut scene.

9. I then had to proceed by foot in the dark to the NAPA HQ. Using stealth the whole way I made it to NAPA. Cut scene.

10. I then had to be transported by NAPA by truck which was escorted by a technical.

11. Soon the technical was taken out and I proceeded by foot to the secondary rally point. Cut scene.

Side note: At some point in the FOB inspection I was asked if Razor would side with NAPA or CDF. I chose NAPA because I helped the priest by not reporting the weapons.

Has anyone actually sided with CDF? What happens?

Oh by the way.....I also wasted about 2 hrs trying to get to the extraction point. Good to know its impossible.

Maybe there is help for this? Maybe a developer has an idea?

So here is my story. I took the HMMWV, drove it to the suspicious house where the ChDKZ have already taken the documents and were fleeing along the road. I took them out and searched the bodies for evidence and did the "bonfire" with the stachel charge. Then I got the odd radio message from FOB Manhatten and the order to inspect FOB for what happend. While knowing that the front gate at the road junction of FOB Manhatten was heavily fortified by the ChDKZ I parked the HMMWV in the woods and approached the front gate from the western woods while taking out the enemy pickup as well as the infantry there. Now while the position was cleared, I moved on up the hill towards FOB Manhatten, but at about 400 meters before reaching the waypoint I get shot by the "invisible" sniper or that "line of death". When I give my teammates the order to approach the waypoint of FOB Manhatten, they survive without trouble. Driving north or south does not help either. Starforce 21 extraction is not working too, the chopper will get shot when I enter it and it starts to fly for a couple of seconds, the revert menu appears. Even talking to to the NAPA soldiers after 1700h is not helping. I am stuck.

I have tried it a second time with the same result - still getting killed close to FOB Manhatten. There is no sequence of Mr. Simmons dying either. :(

Well, you don't 'have' to go through the front gate at the FOB, the HMMWV can climb the slope on the north side of the FOB just fine ;)

Thank you, I have successfully done the mission now.

I guess you are not supposed to attack the front gate then? Anyway, I think a scripted comment from Cooper or your teammates could be helpful to give the player a hint not to attack the gate because it is too dangerous. I mean it is not that hard to take the enemy squad out yourself after you have managed the "Manhatten" mission before. ;)
