Does suppression fire works on the AI?

Recommended Posts

as the title implies -

if u shoot at the direction of the AI but i dont hit them, do they get "suppressed"? does that make them behave any differently?

and if im already talking about suppression fire - if my screen get blurred for a second but i see no "red", does that mean i got hit or is it just a bullet that passed real close? im not sure why my screen goes blury when im being fired at sometimes.

From my experience, yes the AI can be suppressed. They generally become less accurate and stay behind cover more.

Yup, that's suppression. It also causes your aim to shake.

Indeed suppression works but make sure your not getting flanked while focussing fire

Depends on how well behind cover you are, if you are exposed they will go prone and shoot you, but if you are behind cover they will run away and get behind cover.

seriously?

you're saying that if i supress the enemy while exposed they will fire, but if im behind cover they will seek cover?!

i wanna test this. sounds clever. too clever for ARMA :P

I couldn't observe any effect suppression has on AI while actualy playing the game. Doesn't make any difference as far as I can tell. Because AI also does not tend to effectively fight from covered positions, you couldn't suppress them into "heads-down" anyway.

On a sort of related topic. Can you get your ai squad to suppress an area. I am not too sure how to do this.

I dont have the game, but from what i can tell it would seem even if you shot at the enemy AI they probably wont just take cover and not fire because they are worrying about being hit. It will most likley just make it harder for them to hit you, which is still real effective. Someone should test this, would be intresting to know.

While playing Warfare against the AI, I have had my Automatic Rifleman (with the M249) supress an area. I didn't have to ask him to do it. He noticed that the situation called for it and began laying it down in the general direction of the contact(s) towards the tree line using short bursts. The enemy did get less accurate and it allowed the rest of my team to move into better firing positions and cover. My AR ended up getting wounded though so I had to send my medic out after him...

He was set to the following stance:

7-2 - Danger/Lock n Load

3-5 - Engage at will

8-2 - Staggered Column Formation

More you all play it the better chance you will see how AI does things well and not just bad. Its just slightly over the top accuracy wise when not supressed etc, but of course you can fine tune that to ur taste.

Im looking forward to a good AI mod in future as in arma where it becomes much better again.

Thanks eem.

3-5 engage at will? Is this what the AI is set to by default? They seem to shoot anyway.

Does engage at will make them more trigger happy?

I'm not sure Engage at Will (3-5) is default since they acknowledge the order when first given. Typically, if the AI is in a stance and you give an order they are already executing, they will not acknowledge and keep executing their last. I would verify that though...

Last night I had a whole AI squad set up in an ambush position waiting for close to half an hour while overlooking a town out ~4-500m in crcti. By giving the stealth and hold fire commands, I was able to keep the squad hidden in a treeline without engaging the town's resistance until the OPFOR moved into the town. My AI would call out contacts though which was cool... The only thing that sucked was the big giant red marker giving away the ambush position(s) to the enemy human players if they happened to scan that part of the treeline which they did promptly after I gave the order to open fire and engage at will... :)

The other thing that was cool was the AI would call out "Covering Fire!" when in the right position to do so in order to allow other squadmates to move into new firing positions during the engagement.

More neat new things found every match... :)

"Open fire" is set at start. I have no idea how "Engage at will" differs though. Anyone knows?

Fire mode and engagement modes are two different things. Fire mode decides if the unit should fire or not (where 3: Fire is fire only on ordered target IIRC) while engagement modes is whether the AI unit should break formation or not while engaging enemy unit. So by default, all units "start" with the disengage order so they maintain unit cohesion.

This was the way it was in OFP and ArmA anyway. No idea if it has changed in ArmA2 though, since I haven't received my copy yet.

I *think* Engage at Will means that soldiers will break formation, move into firing range of any enemy they've spotted and attack on their own initiative.

i dont know if any of u guys noticed there is a "supress" order in the com menu, but somehow nothing happens when i give the supress order, anyone can give me a hint how i can use this order ?

At start open fire is greyed out. Only engage at will and hold fire is available leaving me with the conclusion that open fire is whats set from start, and it also means that they will engage if they see a threat but not necessarily break formation.

How i understand it anyway.

same issue for me. i can see the supress order but the AI does nothing. they dont really suppress. they dont fire.

weird :(

Try using modules and sync it with specific soldiers/units. I think its like this to stop you ordering it and getting your sniper to pour out ammo at a area.

Correct. It's usually only a good idea to use this when you are trying to finish off a weak enemy force. Otherwise you could find your men dying like flies.

@topeira: Suppression is part of the game, it's all automatic and doesn't need modules or anything special from the mission editor.

Thanks guys tried engage at will etc. Works as you said.

Engage only engages targets they have been set to aim at - correct?

What I would like to do is get my machine gunner to let rip into a particular area. Speculative fire I think its called. For instance I saw a sniper behind a tree, I would like my machine gunner to shoot at, and around the tree, to keep him down. Can it be done, without modding or maybe with it?

I think that would be 'suppressive fire'. First I thought there was no such thing as 'speculative fire', but after I looked it up it turns out to be the same thing as 'reconnaissance by fire'. Learn something every day on these forums :)

It's also funny you can get suppressed by your own bullets if they hit something close, acting as a major stamina loss if done excessively.
