ArmA2 1.03 Impressions - ALL Impressions/Videos/Screenies Here

Recommended Posts

I think max FSAA is 3, not 4 !

Like : 0 (no fsaa), 1 (low), 2 (medium), 3 (high).

and let the application control it in your drivers.

When I set it to 4 it says "very high" in-game.

Well i've been playing lots and lots so heres a bit of an updated impression:

I think overall the game is an amazing, superb, stunning package! The editor is pure brilliance and so is multiplayer when you find a good server. The graphics are really nice, and so is the gameplay and sense of immersion.

However, i do have my issues. This may sound far fetched, but im tired of trying to think of excuses anymore. In my own, personal opinion, the AI is simply terrible. Maybe the worst AI in any game i've played.

But hear me out. It's not because they are bad at aiming, or bad at following orders, or bad at anything in particular. It's because they are down right stupid. I understand they have to process and calculate so so so much stuff and i totally apreciate that, but they are useless.

They have no cover system, they either lay down or stand up in front of you, it would make them 2000% better if they actually crouched behind cover, put there backs to the walls, and used generally realistic tactics, rather than being totally unable to dynamicaly interact with the enviorenment and cover.

They just stand there, or lay down. They have great flanking tactics, great accuracy and general intelligence. But due to the game engines limitations, i personally find that all the great stuff the AI has to offer is thrown out the window by their, or should i say the engines, limits.

But that's my only niggle, other than that keep up the great work! This game is by far my most played and probably always will be!

Rich.

p.s, there is on thing. As many others feel, i do think the games performance is far from optimized, but i know it will be much improved in later patches so i'm not worried really :)

Its odd you say that about the AI, but I do understand that they are far from great. I say this due to last night playing a mission I was shooting at a group of spetz and two of them out of i think 6 or so actually hid behind trees and kept poking either side to get a shot.

That is until they came clear out of the tree they were hiding and got slaughtered.

The game as a million bugs with the most serious of them the black screen with the happy receiving text, the constant crushes for no reason at all and the sounds which doesnt really work and on top of that the game was released with no multiplayer. No all the servers run those crappy evolution maps and all those retarded symmetrical deathmatch maps like hexenkassel or how its called.

Why BIS decided to release the game with no official maps AGAIN? There are only 2 CTI maps and they are or huge or tiny, both unplayeable and only for public server use. I still dont get it whats the policy of the game? The game is new and there are no servers running a serious player vs player map, not to mention that most of times there are no maps at all, no even not serious.

Well if the only reason of this game is to kill thousnds of bots on CTI, Evolution and with addons on the editor i dont know how to say it, the developers have serious management issues multiplayer is what is going to keep the game alive, whatever just my thoughts on my 40euros.

Funny isn't it. Probably figured some pretty pre release screenshots would earn them some quick $$$$ after release. That's the only redeeming quality about the game at the moment, it looks good.

I never understood why evo is so popular. I was kind of hoping it'd change with ArmA 2, but no.

You guys don't read the forums.

First of all, it did come with multiplayer, and many people play it.

Second of all, there are no official maps because all games are played on the map of chernarus.

And 3rd of all, BIS is known for releasing buggy games which are fixed over the course of the next few months with patches. Soon enough the game will be fine. All you have to do is just stick around.

There is something weird with the mouse movement (when you aim).

It feels like it's very sensitive when you move it a bit to make corrections when aiming, and when you move it more and faster (to look around you for example) then it is slower.. it should be the other way.

Turning down the mouse sensitivity results in a very slow mouse movement when you do big movements, but a unchanged nervous and sensitive movement when moving it a bit (aiming in scoped mode).

This is what I call the BF2/CoD/CS sticker shock effect. Those guys have been brain washed by those arcade style run & gun shooters, that don't require any skills other than fast fingers or macro's to play, & the object is just kill as many as you can, as fast as you can, go, go, go.....

ARMA2 fellows is a military simulator. You mention no maps, then on what were you playing when first started playing the game? Think of it like this, if you've ever played BF2, you had lots of different maps right, Cubra Dam, Wake Island, ect... but all those cities & locations were still part of the same game world right, one at one city, one at another, the only thing was, you couldn't actually drive from Cubra Dam to say the Daqing Oilfields, even though they were still part of the same game world, it was the game world that was missing.

A2 gives the player the entire game world. And guess what, they are more city's on the one game world, then all the maps for BF2 combined. There are 50 City's & Towns located in the game world of Chernarus, with every type of environment you can imagine, some are in sand, some in large forest, some on the beach, some in flat open fields, some in the mountains, you name it, it has it. With the built in Editor, you can create your own mission/map to play with your friends, clan, ect....

That's 50 different individual locations to make all sorts of different types of missions/maps, with many different types of game modes: Evo, Deathmatch, Domination, AAS, ect..... and there are many more, so just with those four game mod's, were talking now 50 x 4 = 200 different individual missions/maps you could create. Or you could use the entire game world as one big huge World War, it doesn't matter how you slice it.

You got to think outside the box when it comes to A2. The game world is in fact so big, it would take you about 4 hours to walk across it in real time.

And you mentioned PvP servers & missions, we play PvP all the time in our Tournament (AGW), with maps that are more like Project Reality only way better called AAS (Advance Attack Secure) all of which are PvP. The Pub servers are going to be more common with Co-op modes, where Tournaments & Communities are going to focus more on PvP.

You guys just gotta step back away & read about the game, learn what it's all about & why it's so popular, all those thousands of gamers all over the world can't all be wrong, you have to rethink it with A2.

Says who?

Sorry but that's just bullshit. You want max graphics, you need a high end PC. That's life.

The requirements are there to show you what you need to run it. That is, after all, the most important part.

No, the MINIMUM requirements specified tells you what you need to run the game. The RECOMMENDED specification you should atleast to be able to run the game at medium settings with 30 fps or more.

Do you even know yourself what you're talking about?

  • Games don't brainwash people.
  • "Run & gun" is starting to sound ridiculously stupid.
  • They require very much skill, actually it sounds like you're bad at normal fps games and prefer alternate and slow tactics to minimize the effect of skill, i.e. camping.
  • Being good at OFP/A1/A2 also requires that you have skills and speed. Slower is not better in combat.
  • The only game mode with the objective to kill as many as you can is deathmatch, and it's far from being the most popular mode in any game. If you look at the goals of pvp game modes, all of them still require you to kill enemies more effectively than they do, otherwise fulfilling your objective becomes very hard. Also and especially in A2.
  • Arma 2 is a game.

I have been playing the game for about a day and a half now (sometimes it's swell to be unemployed) and whilst performance is a sad chapter in the story of this game, and indeed, a rather frustrating one at that. I am in love with this game as I was in love with OFP. I am sure this won't change as time passes and BI continues to turn out the patches (and hopefully a solid expansion) like they did for OFP. Great work

I've played multiplayer twice:

1st time... CTD after 10 minutes.

2nd time... Server got dance-hacked

This game was released prematurely.

MP has become much worse with the international release. Even the people who want to play don't seem to know how and you get things like being flown across the map with auto-hover on.

Hi all

To the New Guys.

What you call "maps" are called missions in ArmA

The Official "Maps" for ArmA II are Chernarus and Utes. There also a bunch of other islands "Maps" being transferred from ArmA I to ArmA II as we speak. You could fit thousands of the "maps" from Quake, UT, MOHAA, Call of Duty, RTCW:ET and standard BF into an island in ArmA II.

What you call "maps" in Quake, UT, MOHAA, Call of Duty, RTCW:ET and standard BF are called missions in ArmA.

BIS make a few "Official Missions" they get played a few times but the ArmA community carpet bombs ArmA with thousands of missions.

What to look for

As it sounds like you prefer PvP missions you need to know what to look for. This thread in Multiplayer explains it all:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=75001

Cellery is busy converting his PvP missions and ironing out the bugs in them. he specialises in Death Matches (DM), Capture the Flag (CTF) and Capture and Hold type missions. What may also interest you is Zaphod's Berzerk missions. Zaphod has confirmed he is converting them. I would expect them to be available over the next 2 weeks or so.

In reply to derfmeister; I presume you sent in a crash report in so it can be fixed. The Dance thing is probably easily solved by joining a server running signatures and having an admin.

The importance of clans

As always find a good server to play on; one that uses signatures, is adminned and respected.

I suggest you join a clan. Clans have been what has solved the silly people problem in the past. Clans use servers that use signatures, and are usually adminned, these are used to recruit potential members from. At the moment clans that have open books are searching for recruits and use their public servers to weed out numpties and gather intel on them.

Clans are converting to ArmA II from ArmA I it will take a little while say about 2 weeks or so but a lot of the problems with silly people should disappear then.

Kind regards walker

no, he cant run ArmA2...his computer overheats...

My mission making is indefinitely delayed until I get money for better hardware and the game's editing capabilities improve to include features present in the previous games. Sorry if I got anyone hyped.

Hi all

In reply to [DirTyDeeDs]-Ziggy- That is sad.

I thought his managing to get ArmA II running on an old single core was a little ambitious. Hopefully he can get new hardware together soon. Perhaps in the meanwhile he can nominate one of his colleagues to help update his maps for him.

Kind Regards walker

I have first impressions :) .

Arma II doesnt look twice as better than Armed Assault but it is 5 times more demanding on the HW, yikes!

I like it how the compass, map, watch and radio are now inventory items that can be dropped or removed (i could swear i sugested this once...).

There is alot more mission editing potential than before.

There are sheep in the game  .

pls help. how do you make ingame screenshots? I can't make any using PrintScreen :)

My strongest ingame impression - standing on the dirty road below the Rog castle, and observing the valley :) (First thing I did with my game was that I placed myself on the hill north of Guba bay, went down and swimmed in it :) )

If the next extension will bring us another map from Chernarus (Burnaya and Svetlaya rivers, Novigrad...), it will be absolutely perfect.
