ArmAII-Mark

Recommended Posts

Hie I'm not home atm, but yesterday when I tested with vsync on/off triple buffering on/off etc i noticed some strange things.

In one of maybe 15 runs, there are a dilaog in test 1 and if I rember correct it was somethin like person 1) Have a nice day person 2) Yes, sir. Strange that this dialog only occured once.

In 30% of my test run with a 19" lcd 1280 * 1024 4:3 monitor, and all ingame setting the same, the test did show as ingame cinema (with black border up and down). Never seen this inside the game, when I'm playing. Not sure wat I did to provoke that, but I wil test later.

I always get the cinema effect on the first run of the test, I assumed it was normal.

In game scripted testing where AI play some part are by nature not 100% predictable, and performance score will vary within some boundaries from run to run. I accept that. Normally will run nr 2 and 3 of the same test procedure yield higher score than the first run, because texture and other static data are cached various places.

Switching from full screen display to cinema view in an unpredictable way should not happen in a performance test mission. There are two possible answers:

a) The mission contain some faulty code, witch may be of importance or not for the score.

B) The mission indicate a bug in the ArmaII engine og render engine. IF these are true and if this affects the score, a workaround should be applied, if that is doable.

Finally got my setup optimized to run as it should. here are my results.

VSYNC ON:

FIRST TEST RUN: 4013

SECOND TEST RUN: 4921

VSYNC OFF:

FIRST TEST RUN: 4379

SECOND TEST RUN: 5241

SPECS:

CPU: Core i7 920@ 3.8Ghz + TURBO (one core running 4Ghz)

GPU: Nvidia GTX 295

MEMORY: 6GB Corsair DDR3 1600Mhz running at 1526Mhz

MOTHERBOARD: Rampage II Extreme

PSU: 1000 watt Corsair HX1000

running the game with the -nosplash parameter and nothing else.

installed the EVGA SLI Enhancement, created a game profile in Nvidia control panel and did some tweaking in nHancer to get rid of some ugly bugs as HDR making the screen go all white some times (Disable High Dynamic Range).

take a look at the screenshot to see the settings im using ingame.

the tests on the screenshot were run with vsync on as it is the way I like to run the game.

testrun.png

After all this I tried out the Nvidia SLI Patch and it just works out of the box :-)

VSYNC OFF NVIDIA SLI PATCH:

FIRST TEST RUN: 4310

SECOND TEST RUN: 5405

its on the same settings as the screenshot above.

SPECS:

CPU: Phenom II x4 940 @ 3.7

GPU: HIS HD 4890 @ 951/1125

MEMORY: 4gb (2x2gb) gskill ddr2 @ 5-7-7-20 :icon_sad:

MOTHERBOARD: Biostar TA790GXB

PSU: 650 BFG GS(?) Series :391: (Hopefully not much longer)

Anyways, ran it at 1920x1080, Video Memory - Default, PP-off

All Normal - 4448.71

All High/VeryHigh, PP off - 2 in the 2500-2750, last one @ 3099.63(?)

Then I did it how I'll play most likely

1920x1080, PP off, Video Memory Default, Shadows Low

Everything else, high/very high - 3455.xx on runs 2 + 3.

Now my question:

I played through a mission to see how it was, and while I think it's definitely playable at these settings, it's not as smooth as I wish it would be. Any thoughts on what mark you should get at the resolution you want to play it at? I realize it's all preference, but whats the general consensus? As of right now, it plays pretty smooth, but slows down occasionally. Im guessing its running high 20's-low 30's most of the time, and dipping down to (or possibly below) 20 occasionally during high stress moments.

Thanks!

P.S. Saw people putting view distance - View distance is at 5037(just threw it around 5, don't ask), but i thought armaIImark sets this for you in mission

CPU: Intel E6600

All settings were at NORMAL except Postprocessing effects at LOW

View distance: 2000

Resolution: 1280x1024

Score: 2400

I seem to be only getting tiny bit of chop when playing online and getting into a heavily populated areas and only for a bit. But I noticed my hard drive is working all the time. Is that normal for this game? Shouldn't it be only working during loading sequences like in other games?

Don't feel like upgrading to an Intel i7-920 system yet. It will cost me around $750+tax (Canadian dollars) and I can't afford that yet. Would it be worth going with an Intel Q9550 as a new CPU. I can just slap that into my current system. Or would I get more for my money by getting a Geforce GTX275? Both are around the same price.

Thanks ;)

All of the following test were run at 1680x1050 with AA disabled.

Test 1:

All Settings Normal

Post Processing on High

Test 2:

Asus P6T Deluxe

ATI HD4870 512mb

Asus Xonar Essence STX

Windows 7 RC7100

Nice results for a relatively dated card, my only gripe is there appears to be random stuttering sporadically. It's not FPS lag though which is what has me confused, it feels like the camera is 'tripping' or something. :smiley-blunder:

I'll run the same tests again and compare results once I overclock, but my initial impressions are this game is insanely CPU bound, I've virtually doubled my score coming from an E6400 (2.13ghz), 4GB DDR2 and the same graphics card with WinXP-32.

Yea i can see that, its doubt its my system, because arma 2 only gives 20-30 fps for most systems. I can't afford a i7 920 as i work part time and attend school. I just upgraded to the 6000+ X2 recently a few weeks ago from a 2.21ghz single core, so far im happy, i get 25-60 fps depending on what im doing in the game on any settings no matter what, so far i set AA off and set distance to 1KM and it gave me a bit of fps boost, lowing other settings doesnt do very much, maybe disabling shadows, and lowering texture and video memory and lowering resoultion but im not planning to do that as it only gives me about 2-3 fps boost.

But in MP my fps goes at 20-30, and campaign i get 15-25fps, i really suppose its to do with the game itself. I hope the next few patches will help optimize the game more, i hate it when my fps drops below 20.

Hi,

Your bottleneck here is your view distance. Bring it down to about 2000-2500 and you should see a huge difference. At the moment you are probably experience occational sluggish play? Not really chop. Just feels like it is slowing down a bit in buisy areas with lots of bots.

Unless you are doing a lot of flying. you would not need your view distance that high. What would you need to see at that distance. Missiles lock-on even if you can't see the enemy. And you can't snipe that distance. It is just robbing you of your frames.

Hope this helps.

Changing the view distance didnt make the benchmark any better :( At the very last test...is it normal for it to pause every second? Coz once I start seeing the land, it drops down then pauses then drops and pauses and so on. D:

Damn Choc how are you pulling off 5k? Does an i7 make that much of a difference? :X
