Linux Port for BI Titles

Recommended Posts

Yep there has been a linux DS for OFP and A1.

Yet there are fewer release of it. Only for full patches.

Seems like more effort. So external support might be of interest.

Yup, confirmed - a friend of mine played OFP online under Linux (I don't know which release), after he made some tweaks into Wine it was going "flawlessly" (unfortunately I did not get code changes, only asked him to share his founds with Wine)

Actually, that's a great idea. I'll do it. Lets see the amount of response it gets. :) Can you please tell

me which are the most imporetmat ArmA/OpF BiS news games sites?

Sure:

http://www.armedassault.eu/

http://armed-assault.de/

http://ofpec.com/

http://www.armedassault.info/

http://www.armaholic.com/

http://www.arma-fr.net/

http://www.arma2base.de/

(No particular order.)

As soon as it works again, you might want to check this, there should be more news pages: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Category:ArmA_2:_Community But if some new pages have it, the others will probably see it as well. ;)

Thanks! And, whew, after a long delay, I finally managed to write the online petition. You can review and sign it here:

http://www.petitiononline.com/saf3509/petition.html

"But online petitions are rarely taken seriously." Some may say. That's why I'm doing things a little different for this petition. First, it will mostly be an effort to reach as high as it's possible the scope of the ArmA/Operation Flashpoint playing community from the sites you posted. And second, I made a forum specially for this effort, where anyone interested can post ideas, suggestions, comments, and such. The boards are located here:

http://gameslinux.proboards.com/

All your input is welcomed, and thanks to everyone again! :)

Well, I'm about to sign the petition but that petition site is so f***ing slow...

And there was someone who tried ArmA2 with wine... and it worked! :yay:

Unfortunately I can't test it myself cos I don't have ArmA2 yet...

Really? Damn, yeah, it's timing out for me right now. Hmm, it worked last night when I made it. It was very unresponsive though. Well, in the meantime, you can register and post a comment as a backup solution at the petition's site. :) It can act as some sort of verification system for the signatures.

but i guess FADE was active. im almost sure about that, if you want to play it on linux with wine, FADE will be active. so thats a huge suxx. (i dont think that Bohemia did a work around for a "fake" win environment, just like wine)

Hm, I don't know what copy protection they used in ArmA2 but if it is the same as in ArmA then we need a no-cd *.exe. But we know that BI always removed the copy protection in a later patch, so we just have to wait or find a working (inofficial ;) ) no-cd *.exe

And I would really like to know how the performance of ArmA2 is with wine...

tbh fade was never removed (yes, the latest arma 1 patches got it too, if im right an up to date arma is unplayable (with no-cd's) because of fade, and it cant be played online as it was playable in the first releases). and with a no-cd exe you will just enable it.

btw im really intrested to play it on my linux box.

Guys, do not talk about cracked exes.

http://forums.bistudio.com/misc.php?do=showrules

Technically, doesn't that also apply to discussion about WINE unfortunately? You can't just conditionally enforce the rule.

---------- Post added at 12:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:35 PM ----------

Also, even though Svartalf updated ArmA as being a dead end, it'd be nice to have BI officially make a statement about why they chose not to contract the Linux port of ArmA. Will Maruk or some one else care to comment?

No, as I'm not aware of WINE reverse-engineering or cracking or whatever the exe file. The game data remains unchanged. If you want to continue this discussion, please PM me.

Yeah, thanks for that "red card"... Nobody is trying to copy the game.

hm, so you think fade would even be activated without a cracked exe under wine? How would you know that? Since ArmA1 never run under wine because of some troubles with the d3dx9_30.dll or d3dx9_31.dll...

Im not very acquainted with the FADE copy protection system in ArmA. So, do you need to have the CD inserted in order to paly online with the latest patched up Arma 1? Does FADE specifically need to detect windows? Since WINE only provides a compatibility layer, would runnig it under WINE trigger FADE?

BTW, the online petition is working now! :)

yes, the dvd must be in your dvd rom. (/fixme if its changed) its not about how FADE detects the os (or anything), most copyright softwares just doesnt works under linux (so those games are unplayable out of the box), but i cant tell you more, because i already got a warning.

(i hope im not breaking the rule now :))

ps.: still sorry for my crappy english :)

FADE is apparently triggered by messing around with the original game files (exe).

The DVD protection itself is handled by SecuROM.

Hm, okey, it seems that wine supports SecuROM so there should be no need of a terrorist exe

That's what I thought too. So there should be no troubles with wine and FADE as long as SecuROM works...

Well, I just posted about the petition on the boards Raedor mentioned, let's see if this gets enough momentum. :) BTW, Im thinking of making some banners that anyone can put on their signature to support this. :D What do you people think?

We still haven't heard from a BI representative if/how large a community movement can open the option for reconsideration. For this to work we need to know that BI will even consider us.

So in my opinion, the first step is to open dialogue between BI and the Linux community in this thread, or some other public interface, then we can petition.

Well, I have talked with representatives from Bohemia Interactive before, and they have been very welcomed to open lines of dialogue. This is an on-going effort, so while we can contact them again, we'll have put together a long list of signatures as a compelling argument for them to consider. :)

@A1 copy protection: Afaik you don't need the DVD since one of the last patches to run the game, same for OFP since 1.9x.

Maybe you should set up a Linux users social group, could be a good rallying point to make people aware of what you are trying to do.

That's a very good idea. Do you have any suggestions as to which platform to use for setting up such linux users social group?
