nobrainer 0 Posted November 12, 2009 I bought the german version when it first came out. I have used the @ENGLISH patch all the way. I do speak norvwegian pretty good, but that don't help me now. Since I don't get @ENGLISH to work with the beta patches, is there any other way to fix the language?? I would like to have english all the time and not german. Potatomasher 0 Posted November 12, 2009 Since I don't get @ENGLISH to work with the beta patches, is there any other way to fix the language?? In your shortcut put the beta first and you should have english like i have. "D:\ArmA 2\beta\arma2.exe" -nosplash -mod=beta;@eng;@CBA;@VopSound;@JTD;@namalsk;@euav
nobrainer 0 Posted November 12, 2009 hm You're right, I just tried with "-mod=@ENG;beta" and that don't work, but if you do what you suggested "-mod=beta;@ENG" it works. Seems like I can't use "-winxp" because my ArmA don't shut down on exit. I does shut down on exit if I leave it out. Thanks mate!
irR4tiOn4L 10 Posted November 13, 2009 In the German version which I own there is definitely no option to change all dialogue to English, neither during installation nor in the game. It works like this: Any written information (manual, briefings, subtitles etc.) is in German. Dialogue is in the language of the speaker. The locals speak "Chernarussian" which is either real Czech or a generic dialect of Czech designed to make the language sound a little different. (Not sure about the Czech, though. I don't speak the language but I read different statements - you will know better.) In other threads on this forum some people ask for all English dialogue because they don't want to read subtitles all the time. There are some inconsistencies, however: Russian soldiers acknowledging orders call their officer "Sir" and injured Russian soldiers say in English "Oh, that hurts!". Someone who speaks Russian complained the quality of the Russian language in the game is very poor. The American English of the USMC sounds good but some people complain that the voice actors aren't soldiers which makes some of the phrases and the radio chatter unrealistic. I'd like to know your opinion about the Czech used in your version of the game. Do Americans and Russian really speak Czech? Are the words and phrases realistic? Can you identify "Chernarussian" as an existing Czech dialect? Chernarussian is literally Czech. I was born there and speak the language fluently but currently live in Australia, so im not an expert on dialects, however i know the more common ones and this does not seem to reflect one specific dialect - rather it reflects whatever dialect the voice actor spoke. The Czech is obviously very well done in this game (seeing as the developers are mostly Czech) to the point where Cooper (not a native Czech speaker) has a very realistic and thick accent when speaking Czech. English and Czech are very well spoken in this game (aside from those automated barks) and frankly i dont know of many other games that try and use multiple languages like this. Alpha-Kilo 36 Posted November 13, 2009 irR4tiOn4L, thanks for your comment. Yes, the implementation of multiple languages shows BIS' attention to detail, especially if even Cooper's accent sounds right, as you say. Does the game allow modders to create language packs for their units? By the way, I like the quotes in your signature.

I forgot to mention that theyve even gone to the length of dividing the country across ethnic/cultural lines, with the more northern civilians not speaking 'Chernarussian' (Czech) but Russian (oddly Cooper, who seems to understand Russian when he translates radio broadcasts, is not able to communicate with these villagers, that ive seen anyway). I think its a pretty fine job theyve managed here and the accents from English<->Czech really suprised me - not only do Czechs have a realistic accent in English, but Americans have a realistic accent in Czech! Thats excellent work, and id love to understand the Russian as well to see how accurate that is Unfortunately, i dont know anything about making language packs for units. Glad to see you like the quotes, i loved the irony and humour in them even though their messages are fairly true

I agree. Cultural lines shown by means of different languages among an imaginary society is a really outstanding feature. The programmers must have known that it would be lost on most of their international customers and they never even informed us about it. Cooper not understanding the Russian of he civilians does seem strange. Unfortunately, i dont know anything about making language packs for units. I am quite sure that those who have the dedication to create units representing the army of their home country will at least consider the possibility of letting the soldier speak in their own language. Perhaps it is more difficult than I imagine to put a new language into the game.
