Yep, if you can spend the extra, get the 5770. Performance is slightly better and it's DX11 compatible.

I'd agree though, if you can get a cheap 260 216 (second hand maybe) then it's a good choice although as much as I prefer Nvidia, the 5770 is a better choice in terms of DX11 and power consumption (not something I really care about but it is a consideration for some people).

Don't expect too much of a boost in fps as the gcard can only process as much data as the cpu can feed it. In other words your CPU will limit the graphics card to some extent.

To be honest another 10-15 fps would be lovely, it gets very annoying when it drops below 15 fps at the moment, I would be happy with 25fps typically as a minimum :)

Surely thats going to be a software issue, there are too many variables to be able to categorically state that all 5770 cards crash. What OS you using?

Sure, but if you'll run equally well on a core i5-750 with 4GB ram and a single 5870. That'll save you about 500 euro's.

If you really want an i7 (only real difference with the i5-750 is it has hyperthreading, wich actually slows arma2 down) go for the 860, its half the price for 95% of the performance compared with the 870.

Sorry to hear that mate. I don't game on my 5970, I prefer my 280 Tri SLI rig. I tried A2 on the 5970 when I first got it and I wasn't happy with it. I've also heard a lot of people complaining about ATI's 5xxx series with regards to Arma 2. I'm hoping Nvidia pulls their finger out and delivers Fermi in March although my Tri SLI is more than enough for anything out there at the moment.

ATI's new cards are really good to be sure but I just can't give up things like nHancer in the final analysis.

I didn't mean to say it's guaranteed to lock up. Mine unfortunately does during extended play periods. It has crashed during Oblivion, Arma 2, and Sims 3(my girlfriends, I swear!). I'll admit I didn't do much research but a quick check of google and I found a few people in my boat.

The iMac is expensive but since my household already has some Apple stuff, I can get the iMac on credit without having to pay extra every month (just paying it off longer), so I am more inclined to get this iMac than a supermachine PC that I build myself. I know that a Mac is overpriced compared to a PC but the payment options allows me to get a Mac right now. But am I going to be able to play a future Arma 3 on it?

@bunnyman - dunno anything about macs but at 3ghz and a 4670 u should be able to play the game on normal with decent fps which should give u a satisfying enough experience...

as for arma 3, i hope theres gonna be one but if it hasnt been annouced yet i wouldnt expect it for at least another 2-3 years, anyway (if someone with abit more knowlege wants to elaborate on this) i think with the release of the dx 11 cards we are moving into a new phase of (PC) game development. if devs can focus on building games for pc and not worrying if it will be compatible with the shit xbox etc we will see games start to emerge in a couple years that will be amazing! itll be like and interactive movie, some titles already feel like that a little.

my point is an average PC, even a good one, i wouldnt ecpect to be playing games at decent resolutions that come out in a couple of years

you could play arma2 on this machine I guess, on lowest detail/viewdistance. I really think you shouldn't buy this machine if you dont have the money for it, especially since apple is probably going to release a faster one for the same price in a couple of months. If you want to play arma2 now I suggest you look at secondhand machines, I often see (desktop) machines faster then the mac go for 300 euros or so.

Ive found a 1 month old gtx260 216 on ebay for £110 :)

Planning on then overclocking depending on how the frame rates increase, when I can afford to upgrade to a faster processor I will do.

Yah, that's a good deal. They really are good cards and my preference is Nvidia simply because I like to have nHancer (user manageable profiles) and the option to use Physx when it's supported.

As I said before, ATI's new cards are really good and I might even try some games on the 5970 now that ATI have added profiles in 10.2.

3) Does getting water cooling on the GPU make much difference if its not over clocked?

5) I guess it will run arma 2 well but it would be great to hear from someone with a similiar system as to what to expect running at 1920x1080 with a large view distance? (flying choppers)

Not really, it is easier to OC but not worth the premium.

No, 16:9 is fine.

Not really, although it is also highly dependant on the ambient temperature of your room. If you are only going to be using one card, I think you'll be fine without it.

Can't answer that but you can google them and add keywords like problem, complain etc to see if there is an abundance of complaints.

View distance is a performance killer and no current PC will run it well at max.

There is some big Nvidia announcement tomorrow (not sure if it is going to be about Fermi). As far as Gulftown goes, I've had an ES for a while now and it does nothing for games. The 980x (which is the only one releasing in the near future) will likely be $1300.00 or more.

The short answer is, with Fermi right around the corner, you might be wiser to hold off for a couple of weeks. Even if you end up going ATI, Fermi will likely drive the 5xxx series prices down.

Yes waiting for Gulftown is a good idea, should be very soon(next month~), and will be a Extreme version only at release. I have a Gulftown ES, and if he is buying a gaming rig, it is a total waste of money. If money is no object then have at it, but it is going to cost you a lot more than say, a 920 or a 940, and you will gain nothing as far as gaming goes. Getting a 920/940 to 975 stock speeds is easy to do.

I'm not entirely sure why you felt the need to answer questions I had already answered but whatever.

If the waiting is based on the processor, don't bother waiting. The real good deals on hex cores won't be around until fall at the earliest. You can always buy a 920 now and switch it later.

Waiting a little while for the new GPUs makes sense no matter what video card you are going to buy.

I can see the logic there BangTail, the information I have at the moment is a 2 week to 1 month wait on the ATI cards.

Hopefully there will be some solid release dates from Nvidia soon
