Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.

Recommended Posts

I've tested..

Vista 64

Windows 7

XP 32bit SP3.

The winner, and by a large margin... XP

XP will give a 30% better armamark2 score than both Vista and Windows 7. Actually Windows 7 ran the worst basically becasue Directx 11 sucks in it's current form.

So which is the best OS and why.

ubuntu_logo.gif.

But for ArmA 2 -Some people are reporting Windows 7 to be the best for ArmA 2, some are saying Windows XP. I personally use the former and it works great. Some people seem to have had performance issues with Vista that went away when they tried either 7 or XP.

whatever works for you, and you have access to.

The best OS and the OS that people may have to hand are completely seperate things. If everyone had your attitude, we'd all still be using the PC in my sig...

That said, I'd agree to a certain extent in that I wouldn't upgrade or downgrade an operating system just to use one game. But if all you use your PC for is gaming it may be worth using the one that gives the best performance. But out of all three Windows versions, I'd say Windows 7 is the best for all-around usage and stability.

Arma 2 is also a 32 bit application so there's no real point in a 64 bit OS.

Unless you have more than 4GB of RAM.

I'm using Vista Ultimate and I'm running at least the demo pretty much everything on high without any "serious performance issues". But that's just me. :) Basically, if it works and works well--stick with it. ;)

So far I have tested the game with Vista 32 and XP 32 and XP is a clear winner.

Hmmm.....I thought DX 11 wasn't even available yet in any way, shape or form and that Windows 7 RC (and the eventual retail copy) will only have DX 10.1 initially. DX 11 won't be available until next year from my understanding (although I haven't tried the Win 7 RC yet, plan on reformatting to it today though).

Windows 7 32 Bits [ATI 4850 512 MB / 4 GB / E7300]

And can get an average 30 FPS with almost everything on high, but by disabling the post-processing and by having a "normal" anti-aliasing.

In other words, windows 7 x86 works like a charm here.

Hey guys

I've thought about buying a new pc for Arma 2, as it runs pretty bad. Well bad for me (20-35 fps or so, depending on settings of course)

My current computer is only 1.5 years old though and consists of the following:

Core 2 duo 6850 @3.0 GHz

2 gigs of RAM

Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512 mb

Running XP home

Do you think it would be a better idea to just buy a HD4890 for instance, instead of investing in a whole new system??

Would that be enough to get a signifact increase in performance?

Yeah, your CPU is alright... Maybe just a new card is a good idea.

Info I have gathered from the ArmA2mark scores.....

ATI Cards run better with vista

8sss 9sss nvidia not much of a change between xp and vista

2ss nvidia 30% to 50% increase in performance with xp over vista...

Win7 is all over the place so its to hard to compare.

But you can really see the difference in performance with xp and vista with 2ss cards

i have asked this question before, but no one answers. There must be something wrong with my computer or is this normal:

----------------

My computer:

-q9550

-4gb ram

-nvidia gtx 285 1gb

-vista 32

------------

I play ArmA on settings:

texture - normal

video memory - normal

anisotropic filtering - disabled

terrain - normal

object - normal

Shadow - disabled

postprocess effect - disabled

interface resolution 1680*1050*32

3d resolution 1260*786

View dist 2000

And i have 15-27 fps in arma 2

I have pretty old drivers and have no idea how to uppgrade then (how to uninstall the old and install the new)

pleas, someone, answer this, i can send you money or something...

im getting desperat

That is bad for your rig, something is wrong somewhere, try the arma2mark benchmark tell me what score you get and please when you have run it once go on restart to run it again the 1st time is always crap.

also download this driver please http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7_winvista_32bit_186.18_whql_uk.html

before you install the driver, goto control panel, add remove not sure if same as xp, uninstall nvidia driver, use ccleaner after you uninstalled http://www.ccleaner.com/download this will fix any left over crap in reg just click registery, scan for issues, then fix after fix restart pc, goto your myconmputer, local disk, and delete the nvidia folder, not sure if same location as xp just find it and delete it after just use ccleaner again scan if no reg errrors then just install new driver. phew:)

Go for the HD4890 and overclock your CPU a bit Fox (you can find plenty of guides on the net for doing that easily, minimizing the risk to your system). You should be able to play the game smoothly with high settings and save yourself quite a lot of money. I went from a 8800GS 320MB to a HD4890 and the difference in performance was abismal. And my CPU is slower than yours (C2D 6400 @ 2.6Mhz).

Personally, I would stay away from any gaming laptops. They really aren't worth the money, despite the convenience. One thing to keep in mind, the 260m graphics card is not equivalent in speed to the desktop 260.
