opteryx 1562 Posted February 20, 2009 To be honest I don't believe BIS biggest terrain for ArmA2 will only have the size we see in that picture. Opteryx i really have to disagree with that specific scale, not that i have contrary informations, but its just a feeling. We all know Sahrani is a 2048x2048 terrain grid size. I really doubt ArmA2 biggest Original terrain, shown in ArmA2 videos, will be restricted only to a 4098x4098 terrain grid size. If so it would mean if we set VD to max, we would be able to see all map at once. From what was told, i believe the improved engine can handle more, much more. Maybe its a surprise for the end Google the facts.... Sahrani is 400km2, Chernarus is 225km2. How more obvious do you need to get it?
derk yall 0 Posted February 20, 2009 400Km2 with or without water?
opteryx 1562 Posted February 20, 2009 400Km2 with or without water? With, obviously. You'd be luck as hell to get such a perfect number on an erratic coast line. You can verify this by setting a waypoint on the end of the map, then measuring the distance from the opposite side, this magic number happens to be the square root of 400km2. bravo 6 0 Posted February 21, 2009 but if thats the true numbers.. its really interesting how BIS will simulate the limits of the map.. Â I just think there are some stuff behind it that we don't know yet.. Edit: Can you guys open the respective PDF? File: ARMA2 - Chernarus PDF it says: "Learn the details about the country of Chernarus - the large game world of ARMA 2." Does it make sense to have a smaller map then ArmA1? Something is simply not right here.
derk yall 0 Posted February 21, 2009 Well, Sahrai was big. The scale of Ladmass and water have 400km2, the size of the landmass is lower, maybe around +- 200Km2. Im not sure, just judging from the map. It make sense. Sahrani is big, but also relay unused. There are plenty of areas wich arent very much used in the game. Chernarus is maybe smaller but it is designated to dont have so unused areas, like Sahrani have.
POTS 0 Posted February 21, 2009 This has already been discussed, arma2's "landmass" will be larger than arma1's "landmass". 400sqkm is the size of the entire sahrani map. Put down a rectangular marker and you will see. If you scale the landmasses correctly, arma2's landmass is larger than sahrani's.
lwlooz 0 Posted February 21, 2009 Hello there, More Island size data As for the borders, I am pretty sure Suma ( I assume it was him for his love of landscapes) is smart enough to just make 'random' terrain go out from the actual map infinitely.
Maddmatt 1 Posted February 21, 2009 Does it make sense to have a smaller map then ArmA1? Something is simply not right here. Have you read the topic? The map is not smaller from the above information.
bravo 6 0 Posted February 21, 2009 sorry guys, ill be honest, i have not read the hole topic, i missed 2 pages  If BIS uses the same method to build maps, ie, with Visitor3, probably we will have water around it. Look what we have on the bottom left of the chernarus image. With the tools we have today if we did such the zone after the limits would also have blue. Maddmatt 1 Posted February 21, 2009 sorry guys, ill be honest, i have not read the hole topic, i missed 2 pages  Hehe, at least you're honest Quote[/b] ]If BIS uses the same method to build maps, ie, with Visitor3, probably we will have water around it. Suma commented a while ago in a similar topic that they might end up with some kind of procedural land or something but that they haven't decided yet and are focused on other things. Maybe when they have decided what to do they will reveal their solution.
sk3pt 0 Posted February 21, 2009 The procedural terrain in the WIP game Infinity: The Quest For Earth is really impressive. Either something like that, or sandworms.

Brendon 0 Posted February 21, 2009 Can hope they use procedural land generation on the edges.Battlefield repeats the map although I think strips away all the players, objects, textures etc. Lockon has flat infinite land. I don't expect too much. Also, if it's plus or minus 50 sq km doesn't matter much imo. Sahrani was plenty big. The usability of the provided land is what matters. A lot of the land on sahrani was virtually unusable; massive unclimbable hills, big areas with nothing on it, no trees, no rocks, nothing. Things like that reduces the actual playable map quickly. No, I've actually been to the end of a battlefield map by using a fast jet. Takes 8 seconds to get to the end of the map. You can easily see that ARMA2's Map is much Bigger than Sahrani. Sahrani was 70 percent water. If you look at the streets and towns compared to ARMA 2, you can see ARMA2's is bigger.

NeMeSiS 11 Posted February 23, 2009 Project: IGI had endless randomly generated landscape at the edges of the map, and that was back in 2002 or something.
Spetz 0 Posted February 23, 2009 + There are railroads. I hope there are engines. Idea for RPG : (the old one from OFP where u had to build factories to build vehciles and things like that) those trains could be used to bring in supplies and fresh AI units Also Idea for SP mission: Loot the train carrying weapons and tax money from the CDF forces   and then divide the loot among the poor and hungry
