In-Game Video???

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if it was possible to play a video in-game.

for example:

A tv addon that plays a video on its screen or the appearance of such by using something similiar to displaying custom pictures like in the briefing. huh.gif

AFAIK there's no render to texture capability in ArmA, so you would have to do such a thing by creating a scene inside the screen.  Symbols and stuff could be done, but I don't think you could have footage of anything or something like that.  Spooner has made a 3d 'holographic' map.  I think you could do a similar thing with little poly planes with symbols textured on them, floating just above a map or some such thing.

edit: You could possibly exploit the order in which alphas are handled, making a tv 'see through' the rear wall of a stage or something. You could set this up to allow the player to witness events unfolding outside. Unfortunately, if the player was allowed to move, it would be painfully clear that it was a window and not a tv.

Looks like he's swapping the textures on the TV screen really fast. Channel 2 is just a static texture, and Channel 1 is a loop less than a second long. The "snow" is also three or four images.

So there you go. You can also make a 2d animation and use hidden selections to swap frames really fast. That seems like it would take much longer than is worth it to set up, as evidenced in the creator's very limit implementation of his own idea. It is fairly creative, though. You could create a slide show for a briefing fairly easily.

Also, someone around here (you'll have to search for it) created an addon for making signs that can swap textures.  He used it to make a pretty nifty "blinking" neon sign, among other things.

EDIT: Found the YouTube video

. Based on the name of the person who posted the video, I would assume that the author was Myke. But I can't find the addon (search is wonky at best). Good luck. smile_o.gif
