Uggas Uh-1d feedback from experts

Recommended Posts

Preview version of Uh-1D

Version 0.1

made by Ugga

This is only intended as a preview.

I want to give people the oppertunity to go all over it and bitch about all the small things that are

off/wrong/stupid/whatever.

The areas of intreset are Lod 1.000 and the View - Pilot lod.

I'm not done with this yet, I still need to map textures and whatnot.

However this is an Open Source release. If you want to map textures yourself (and fix all the other stuff)

Go ahead and do so.

This model is free to use by anyone as long as:

*I am mentioned and credited as the original author

*The model, textures etc. are not converted to any other game/engine (BIS EULA for modding stuff with Oxygen etc.)

*The model/addon remains open source. If the model/addon is not distributed in a un-encrypted form (for reasons of file-size etc.)

the addon must be available in a open soruce un-encrypted separate download

*The model/addon is distributed free of charge

Credits:

*Anyone I've forgotten (sorry)

Because when you have a download available, the Forum Rules specify that you must put your thread under A&M:Complete.

It's only a matter of which forum it's in. smile_o.gif On another note, the picture links don't work for me. confused_o.gif

Cheers biggrin_o.gif

well there is a difference between "alpha" addon and a 3d model with just a lod that is 100% non-working.. its just a "better" way then posting 2000 screenshots.

The links should work.. works fine for me smile_o.gif

Yup, the links work fine for me as well. They worked when this was in the Discussion section and work now.(Not sure if that would make a difference but I figured I'd put that out there.)

Judging only from the screenshots the sides are too flat, I'm not sure, but I think there's a blueprint with cross sections here:

http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw_c.html

But definatley too flat. needs to be more curved, like this:

also, here are some walkarounds

From a modelling perspective, it looks like you've done some nice work over all.  Without being an expert on the aircraft or doing any research, it looks the model is proportionally correct and it has some nice details that sell it.  I have some issues with some geometry distribution and such which I will get into in more detail, but first I wanted to say that I like what you've done so far.

It looks like you have a dramatically uneven distribution of geometry.  To exaggerate, the shot from the back shows a probe and the tail of the aircraft that appears to have more geometry on the equipment on the fin than on the sides of the aircraft in its entirety.  It is not necessary to have every polygon of equal size, but a lot of detail on the tail could be reduced and redistributed to defining the shape of the nose (which appears jaggy in comparison) and other areas.

It looks like you have some shading problems, which might have to do with shading groups or hard/soft edges.  I'll leave that to you, but I think that you should cut down on the number of very dense poles.  Let me qualify that term in case you are unfamiliar with it.  A pole is a vertex where geometry changes detail.  Common ones from extruding are N poles and E poles, names after the number of edges that are connected to them (3 (for N) and 5 (for E)).  It looks like you have a very dense pole in the top rear corner of the front doors.  Poles like that will likely cause you shading errors.  If you just continue the detail from the front of the door to the end, you will only be adding like 4 triangles but you will be preventing certain shading problems.

The ports on the side of the engine are a nice touch, but they are not necessary (I don't think) because that's one area of the aircraft you will not be seeing much of.  Those details could be included in a normal map.  If you really like what it does to the silhouette and simply can't do without them, I would suggest that you clean them up so that they are sitting on the geo for the engine cowling instead of poking through.  You can see in the screen shots that you're getting what looks like a z-buffer error from the crashing polygons, or your vent geo isn't perfectly aligned with the cowl, so the cowl is taking bites out of the edges of the vents..
