31st Normandy mod -WW2

Recommended Posts

Well strictly you'd really need to include the regimental and

brigade insignia and arm-of-service stripes as well as those

divisional insignia. The divisional insignia on their own would

possibly do as a generic "arm badge", I suppose, though it

wouldn't be exactly authentic.

I'd not worry about badges and stripes until I'd got the actual

men and equipment made, though. If you get in touch with

me later (after your model British soldiers and weapons are

further on) I can give you some examples of authentic battle

insignia.

Pictures and description of british paratroopers ww2, but is in french  huh.gif

http://www.22sas12.com/article-1733291.html

I think they are actually supposed to be Free French SAS (ie

3 or 4 SAS), so they differ a little in detail from British

airborne troops. The beret pulled down on the French side

(with the king's crown chopped off the British Parachute

Regiment badge) and the M1 Carbine are the dead

giveaways. The M1 Carbine was the most common SAS

weapon in the European theatre in 1944-45. British army

airborne troops never carried them. Anyway, the request

specified "not paratroopers".

okay here's my first attempt on some British troops

Oh dear me, no. I have to go and lie down for a bit after

seeing those...  crazy_o.gif

*Col. Faulkner has a lie down and a couple of stiff drinks.*

Ok, here's a start. The webbing is the wrong colour. It should

be blanco'd "Khaki Green No.3" for N.W.Europe in 1944. And

the battledress blouse didn't have "tails" on it. Your men (if

they look like anything at all) are more like Australian troops

from the N. African campaign wearing the old Service Dress

tunics. Study closely the colour of the webbing belt and

anklets on the guy in the 'photo below. Note carefully also

the cut of the battledress serge uniform. It's just a short

jacket (called a "blouse") and trousers made out of really

tough wool serge ("too cold in winter and too hot in summer"

as they used to say):

okay here's my first attempt on some British troops

(cough)

Already surpased anything I've attempted so I hate to sound overly critical. But on top of Col.Faulkners great advice get them to lose a few pounds. They're looking a bit like they've been sitting around eating pork rinds. wink_o.gif

Guys, try to get in touch with Fab from WWIIEC, I think he did a lot of research into British and commonwealth uniforms, units and insignia for their Caen mod for ofp - not sure how active the mod team is now, but I'm sure if you get in touch with Fab he will be able to point you in the right direction.

You're going to have to make proper ammo boots and puttees, painting them on will not do. The webbing is also lacking the brass, the belt needs brass too. The webbing makes an X pattern at the back. The belt is currently positioned too low, needs to be higher. You're also missing a water bottle and bayonet sheat. The texture looks blurry though. Do a google search for Pattern 37, you'll find some crudely, but most excellent refrence for modeling.

The helmet looks oddly shaped, far too oddly, the shirt is tucked under the pants and belt and not over, it's missing buttons. The pockets are way off, check the pics posted by Faulkner for reference. If you want, I can share some of my stuff, but it's khaki drill, so it might not be of much use, but the pattern 37 webbing refrence applies. As for the pack, not sure if it's a small pack or a large pack, but much too round in any case. Also, it's missing the extra attachment straps for the pack, along with the brass work. I'll send some refrence your way, if you wish.

Heh, Faulkner taught me well

don't worry I took no offense from anyone the critisism was just a little more overwhelming than expected but also very usefull I just need more time on it thats all.

you'll be happy to know that the shirt has been tugged in, I'm no good with the UV map thing so it looks kinde odd right now but I'm hoping to get that settled.

I'm glad to see this mod progressing further.

When it comes to the Germans, I would definitely like to see more when it comes to the camouflaged units (smocks, helmet covers), especially when it comes to the Waffen-SS.
