l mandrake 9 Posted June 1, 2008 Hi all, this is a bit cheeky as I am not a scripter/modder at all. However I am getting tired of the 'arcadey' way in which guided missiles are deployed in ARMA. It's just too quick and easy to 'tab-fire' repeatedly from an aircraft, meaning one chopper or jet can completely demolish an opposing battle group in a few seconds (as fast as you can hit the tab button). This is far too quick and represents a serious imbalance in ARMA right now in favour of aircraft. To make flying more of a challenge I think a mod is needed to extend the time needed to acquire a good weapons lock with hellfire/vikhr, e.g. 10 seconds holding target in the designator box before a solid lock is acquired (symbolised by the white diamond). At least this way a pilot would have to do SOME work to hit his target, rather than 'tab-click', 'tab-click', 'tab-click' etc. It is also ridiculously easy to get a lock with a Stinger or Strela, I mean you just get an INSTANT lock, 100% strength, even if the target is coming at you head-on! At least in OPF you only had a chance to hit the aircraft if you engaged it from a rear aspect; this made the game nice and tense as you were worried about wasting your 1 shot and so waited for the optimum angle. Anyone who has played flight simulators knows that an IR seeker head takes time to acquire a good lock (signaled by a 'growl tone' ), the volume of which increases or decreases with the strength of the lock (if it has direct line of sight to the hottest part of the target, ie. the engines, it will lock faster and stronger). So I would also love to see a mod which introduced a delayed locking sequence to Stinger/Strela (again, 10 secs may be fine, ideally with growl tone), and also made these weapons far less effective when fired at the colder parts of a target. Anyway I know its easy to request mods and a hell of a lot of work to create them, but I figured 'if you don;'t ask, you don't get' . Cheers Mandrake

l mandrake 9 Posted June 1, 2008 yeah Mando's stuff looks great - especially the countermeasures (flares, chaff) - this certainly gives pilots more of a chance (however I played a modded version of evo which used the flares and it got equally frustrating because the choppers were impossble to hit at all with AA missiles! ) But does Mando's stuff make the actual process of locking up targets harder? I can't see anywhere that it does... however please correct me if I'm wrong!

Uziyahu--IDF 0 Posted June 1, 2008 Yep, just watch the A.I. reload an RPG when it already has a target. The very instant it is finished loading it fires away without taking the time to aim at all. Watch video of soldiers in Iraq doing it, and they're taking quite a long time to make sure they get the shot right. Enemy infantry used to drive me insane in OFP (the problem was there, too) whenever I was in an armor mission.
mandoble 1 Posted June 4, 2008 With Mando Missile replacement you have "slow" strellas and stingers, and a chopper can easily survive 2 or 3 direct hits. What you cannot change is locking on sequence if you are using stock ArmA launchers, even if they are replaced by Mando missiles at firing time. The EVO version you are talking about is using Mando Missile countermeasures or is using the auto chaff flares addon where the flares effectiveness is about 100%? hailstorm 4 Posted June 5, 2008 I think if this 'slow lock' was somehow successfully implemented, it would solve a lot of problems - for one, too many people complaining that aircraft are overpowered, missiles are overpowered, etc. It would be good if missile targeting could have a built-in delay between acquisition and lock (like a gunship cannon) maybe even better - have it at first 'lock' in the center of the screen when a target is found, and the pilot has to wait until the diamond settles on the nominated target before firing (kinda like a modern air-launched heatseeker missile, with more delay), it would remove the whole 'tab-fire' attitude to flying - which i think is more realistic (relatively speaking) and would work nicely for both pilots and ground troops. As to whether that's possible in the ArmA engine, I'm not sure, but definitely something worth looking into.
