mr.g-c 6 Posted April 21, 2008 Hi, my brothers and me want to do something special for the next LAN-Session in our neighborhood - we want to have our REAL faces in game... How is the best way to achieve this? I saw very often on public servers people who looked like well known celebrity's, so basically you can recognize them pretty well.... Who can help me with this, where do i start? Best Regards, Christian
maddogx 13 Posted April 21, 2008 I tried this with my own face once... it took me ages and didn't work out well. And I'm not exactly a Photoshop noob. Get ready for some considerable effort. Basically you're gonna need to understand the structure of such a face pic before you start. I believe there was quite a good thread in the MP section a while back. You're also gonna need to take some photos of your head from different angles (front, side and back I think). Edit: Found the thread for ya.
mr.g-c 6 Posted April 21, 2008 Hi, thanks for your answer.... I downloaded the Photoshop template from Wipman, but how to get my face fitting on it? How to stretch it.... damn it that looks pretty complex.... Regards, Christian
wipman 1 Posted April 21, 2008 Hi, yes, indeed is very complex; the best way of get it that i know is to take various photos of your own face, from the sides (front of the ears) other from the side of the face (front of the cheen) other from the front (nose, mouth, eyes) and then... you got to cut off the selected areas... and re-scale 'em down to match (cover) the "details" of the face (eyes, eyes holes surroundings, nose, lips, ears) and... fill the "empty spaces" between 'em with flesh "patches", squared look alike "patches" and then; redo all the shadows for the deep areas of your face and all the lights in the tall zones of your face. Which is a damn pain to do and that i never managed to do even half well and that i only try to help if it's a fella who asks me to do it and not a Mr. Idon'tKnowWhoTheF***YouAre Lastname: AndIdon'tCare. Do it by hand is a true pain and without the plugin to do it "directly" is so painfull that i gave up to do it for myself and i don't want to do it for anyone else. Let's C ya
mr.g-c 6 Posted April 21, 2008 Thanks for your comment, wipman.... you have strange way to write posts.... Nevertheless i'll try it first with just the front of my face and my eyes... maybe that is enough first.... I mean i doubt that the faces of celebrity's were taken from all the sides.... Let's C ya Just a random comment: You dont have to press the enter button all the time, the sentence will automatically go to the next line of its too long. (Double) enters are only needed for the next paragraph. Now your posts look a bit like poems. (No offence ment)
Col. Faulkner 0 Posted April 21, 2008 Just clart a random face with cam' cream and say it's you underneath it all!
max power 21 Posted April 21, 2008 you could always cut all the skin off of your head along the seams on ArmA UVs, wash it off, roll it flat, and take a picture of that.
paragraphic l 2 Posted April 21, 2008 I've managed to create the entire face texture from own photographs with no original texture being shown anymore But I started a year ago and have been tweaking and fixing stuff ALL the time. I made sure some characteristic features where shown how they should, but still you need to have a good look at the face to recognise me. So I wouldn't bother as it doesn't look like you have enough experience with photoshop and stuff like this. A simple pasting of the front of your face might do but you could just aswell just get the text tool and write your name on the forehead.
mr.g-c 6 Posted April 21, 2008 Well my long-year Girlfriend is a photographer and a photoshop ACE! My skills in PS-CS3 aren't bad either (using it for Webdesign)...... I mean there is also Marek Spanel's Face in Arma (look for the face named "Mark S"), i think i can recognize him there (when you compare this to the latest Arma2 video by PC-Games)... Even better you can recognize him, when you played longer, get to main-menu and see in this background-video the lonely Bluefor-soldier viewing the field. Sometimes you see him from front with mimics and i would bet my ass thats Maruk.... Picture: [Picture removed] Regards, Christian
paragraphic l 2 Posted April 22, 2008 Okay sorry to presume you have not enough photoshop experience/skills by just your posts here. And indeed Maruk is recognisable, I have to say I'm not near as good as a texturer as the guys at BIS are but I think to remember they having some sort of face scanner, which offcourse makes it a LOT easier. Fact is though, you still need to resize your entire face, eyes, nose, ears, eyebrowes, mouth, forehead, chin, cheeks, hair... everything to fit the wireframe for the face. So eventhough you will be recognisable it will never look like you because the proportions will probably not be the same as your own.... UNLESS offcourse your head is similair to the arma one. I wish you good luck and I hope you don't have an ATI card cause even if you have your face looking wright, it will be to bright thanks to some bug... and you have NO idea how much work it is to recolour everthing to the correct dark shade to have it match ingame the wireframe for the face provided by Placebo should also be found somewhere around the forum
maddogx 13 Posted April 22, 2008 If you want to avoid the ATi bright face bug (which is also visible to other players online, if they have an ATi card), you can also try saving your face as .paa instead of .jpg - but you'll need to downsize the file, because .paa files are much much bigger than .jpg. wipman 1 Posted April 22, 2008 Hi, i think that BIS used a expensive plugin for the PS for "transform" easyly, the faces to the game mapping; there is the Samuel L. Jackson's face (which im sure that BIS didn't paid the image rights...) and may had been made from a photo focused on the cheen; this ones can be used to make you're own face in game but, it takes time and you've to tweak or your own skin colour (CTRL+L & CTRL+B) and gamma levels etc. Belive if i tell you that try to make your own face match the BIS head model mapping is very very painfull. In fact, i hate it like i hate the renault twingos; which is a lot. Let's C ya

I tried it out yesterday and was able to make my own face pretty quickly - although it took some photoshopping, as was to be expected. Still doesn't look like me in-game though. I guess my head just has the wrong shape. It would be cool if we could make some minor RPG style modifications to the size and shape of the head, ears, nose etc.
