max island size?

Hey all,

Is 25km the max size for islands? (512x512 cells grid.)

I've searched this forum and sware I seen somewere that they could be 50km a year or so back, but can't find it.

51.2km x 51.2km = 2621.44 km^2

I think uwar_desert is that size. There was some issues on islands larger than 12.8km though, like models stuttering in MP or some such.

But, models stuttering? was that due to many objects on the island?

In fact, what creates lag on an island seems to be :

(1) Lot of objects in the same area (cause those objectfs must be rendered at the same time), such as towns etc.

(2) Heights.

(3) Two many bad objects (poly counts, texture sizes etc.).

(4) Pathfinding problems during missions (such as too many units in forests / surrounded with lots of objects).

I just tested my map and it seems okay with no major lag.

But that's with just the road network and jungle/grassland, but i have not started on towns yet.

Rendered is when you set the buildings to fit the ground?

In Wrptool manual there's information what's the max size for island.

Wrptool can make a 1024x1024 map ... MAX .. anything bigger and the OFP engine will crash , I have tested out some 5 different maps of plain Flat , to rolling hills , to Mountain ranges ....

ISLAND SIZES

Default OFP island size is 256x256 cells that comes to 12.8x12.8km area, these all are the BIS islands and most if not all user made islands to date (Aug 2003). Theare however different sizes you can use, these are: all 2^n Size like 32x32, 64x64, 256x256 etc.

Largest Island

1024x1024 = 51.2x51.2 KM

if you try to get a 2048x2048 in to OFP you will have a CTD with some memory error

smallest Island

is a 2x2 cell island

With Visitor you could make bigger islands than with wrptool.

Have anyone tried to make 2048x2048 with windows 64 bit?

Or at least tried to open up the 2 gig ram memory limit in windows 32 bit, and then try to make a 2048x2048 map?

Here is how you do it.

This guide does not only apply if your system has more than 2GB of memory. The RAM is only the physical memory while the memory the OS provides is virtual memory that also uses your page file.

Windows XP:

Start=>Run=>Enter sysdm.cpl and press ENTER

In the new form click

Advanced=>Startup and Recovery Settings=>Edit

Now you're editing the boot.ini. Be careful and do exactly(!) what is written here.

Search for the entry of your operating system and add "/3GB /USERVA=2800" at the end of the line. The whole thing should now look similar to:

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB /USERVA=2800

Windows Vista:

Click on Start->All Programs->Accessories

Now right click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator"

Now the command prompt should open where you type the following command:

bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2800

Now press enter and reboot your system.

Windows 7:

Click on Start->All Programs->Accessories

Now right click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator"

Now the command prompt should open where you type the following command:

bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2800

Now press enter and reboot your system.

Tell me if it worked.

Edit:

Just tested it, what i find out was.

The visitor dont crash if the map is 2048x2048 140x140 km and you only have a landmass in that map that is 1024x1024 52x52 km (or similar) that you fill with textures.

If you fill 2048x2048 landmass with textures, the visitor will crash.

Now i wonder, what about visitor 1?

Im sure had heard of 140x140 km maps before.
