ArmA Effects

Just a couple of quick observations about this excellent effects add-on:

- The flames created by burning vehicles seem to be extremely bright (as in their surface config rather than their texture). Glancing at a burning vehicle in low light shouldn't blind the player so much, fire (especially an open air petrol fire) is not really very bright in the visible spectrum.

- I think the jumbo raindrop texture is over the top.

I just wanted to thank you for your great Mod!! It multiplies the ArmA-Experience by thousand and I'm using it since the first Alpha-Version came out..

Hi, after alot of trying i find the smoke left after some AR shoots

excesive; i preffer the BIS default smoke, now it's like if you had

a MG3 and had shoot various continious burst, it reveals fast you're

possition to the enemy and makes the AI enemyes easyer to spot.

Same for when when the bullets hit the ground, that's really overdone,

it helps on long distances... but it shouldn't be that way, i in this

preffer the BIS hit on the ground bullet effects than this so big

smoke cloud; i'll like booth things to be removed, but that's just

a personal opinion. Let's C ya

Is there anywhere I can find older versions of this mod?

The things I dont really like with the latest version is:

-the raindrops. It looks like cold "slushy" rain, just before it turns to snow. It gives me that cold chilly feeling along my back because of all memories smile_o.gif, but Sahrani is summer for me..

-to much and to big flames, the vehicles are covered in a big fuelfire

-the weaponsmoke, todays gunpowder doesnt produce that much smoke (?? not as I have seen)

I know. Trouble is I can't adjust their brightness properly. I posted a comment about it on the wiki here.

I've tried to reduce the effect by adjusting the colour, which seems to have helped. But I'm not sure.

Yea, I want a new texture for it. If anyone can make a good texture to replace it then I'll probably use it.

About weapon smoke: I've seen about the same amount of smoke in videos of real weapons firing. I've made a new smoke effect which is scripted (looks better and doesn't get messed up in MP). I don't know how visibility is compares to the old one, but I've watched real videos and it seems about right.

Bullet impact: I didn't make it any bigger than the BIS one, just less transparent and adjusted parts. Maybe I'll work on it. But real bullet impacts seem more visible than the BIS ones.

Combat Prison has all versions (except 0.1).

The rain: Already mentioned, I want a new texture for it.

Fire: After a few minutes it shrinks to a smaller fire. Maybe I'll change the fire effect.

Weapon smoke: See above

Do I understand right that ArmAEffects is now integrated in XAM 1.4S? So there is no need to run ArmAEffects and XAM 1.4 at the same time?

The rain: Already mentioned, I want a new texture for it.

Hi Maddmat, you should try THIS VERSION (clic) of the rain.

It is one of the first versions of Symbiot's rain texture and it is, imo, the best version of a rain texture released so far.

Here is a screenshot of the version I m' talking about

Don't rely on the screenshot, this version is really stunning and it would be really great if it could be in the next version of maddmatt's effects.

The perfect thing would be a mix with this one and the actual version of symbiot's rain.

P.S : you should take a look at this thread it would be totally awsome if you could integrate this thing into your mod tounge2.gif

Man I hope if you do alter the rain that maybe you give us a few choices to pick from; IMHO this is the best the rain has ever looked in ArmA and it would be a shame to lose it. I think once the ground splashes are brought back it will be perfect.

When you play MP and another avatar is standing up shooting there is no smoke coming from his weapon, only small dustclouds. Doesnt look to good..

Ah, this really looks poetic! Perfect explosions... I don't know about how it looks in MP but it looks amazing in SP. Great job!!! Thanks for your contribution.

It looks just as amazing in multiplayer and shouldn't affect gameplay much, except that you will see more smoke and dust than people who don't have the mod so you'll be at a slight disadvantage in visibility.

Hi maddmatt wink_o.gif. could you add some chopper dust , enabled early (maybe 20 or 25 meter altitude) in your next release ?

i found chopper dust a bit modest

I'm not sure that can be changed in a mod, without completely replacing the chopper dust with a scripted version. I'll look into it. But the amount of dust a real chopper kicks up is very dependent over what it's flying over. I'll see.

I think the default chopper dust is ok. As you say maddmatt, its very dependent of what its flying over. I dont want any desert sandclouds in a wet forrest. Arma default amount and colour makes it ok everywhere.

Is it possible for you to use this function? Then you can change the effects according to the terrain/surface. If you also check the weather the effects will always look right.

I guess its alot of work, but it would mean lots of dust in the desert and more moderate in the northern forrests. FPS could also benefit from that as more moderate effects, suitable in the northern sahrani, is less CPU-intensive.

It was Panda[PL] that made me aware of that function in ONI.au's thread Pingu's claymores

@andersson: Yes I know about that command. Right now the ArmA chopper dust is not a script, it's set in the config. The surfacetype command isn't very accurate, the "grid" has a very big block size. Since the dust effect uses the config, it seems better to leave it that way instead of changing it to run on scripts. Maybe in the future I'll do that. For now I like the dust as it is though.

I'll probably update the mod soon. I haven't got anything huge. Just a few small new things and some tweaks.

I haven't spent much time working on the mod lately.

I still don't have a better rain texture. The rain I have is a particle effect, not a texture overlaid on the screen. So nothing from other rain addons is of much use for me. If someone can look at the particle in my mod and make a better one, it would be great if you sent it to me.

I may just give photoshop a try and see if I can make a new one. I'm no texture artist though.

@Winters1807: Cool video. I've seen quite a few A10 videos lately. Lots of explosions in them biggrin_o.gif

Not really. I'm running out of possibilities in the config. So more and more stuff needs to get scripted. Such as that .50cal dust wink_o.gif

Oh well, lets see if I can get an update released in a week or so smile_o.gif

Sounds great! If so, please look into that function. It could be beneficial for realism and CPU-load. Ofcourse it will also mean more work for you... whistle.gif

Hey i just want to make a suggestion (apologize if its already been suggested).

In real life, sparks are visible when rockets or missiles are released from helicopters or hand held launchers. Sparks are also very present during vehicle explosions (lots of hot metal fragments). This is especially visible at night.

Sometimes they are visible from small-arms as well.

This would be a great effect to add to the mod if you could.

Yes we really need those sparks effects... for example when A10 rounds hit a tank, you can be sure to see big sparks rather than fire-explosions.

So i can only suggest this - give us sparks baby....
