Tank Targeting

Recommended Posts

Here is the issue (I think) I have. As commander, I understand how to assign a tagret to the gunner through the menu system (by hitting "2" first to bring up the contect specific menu for the gunner)...I can then use the menu system to tell him to engare/fire, but he never does, even though a target has been assigned. As a commander, the only way I can seem to get the gunner to fire on a targer is when I place the targeting cursor over it. Cant it be done using te menu system?

THere has been a rash of tank commanding questions lately (including myself). Im sure that you will your answer within the first few pages on this forum, if you havent already. But even if you know how to to do it perfectly, sometimes it just doesnt work right. Like targeting and enemy IDing for example.

Select the gunner "F2" "F3" "F4" whoever he is

Open the targets menu "2"

Select the target you want from the list

Did you even play around with it more than 3 minutes before opening a new thread?

Yes, my friend, I have played with it for more than a few minutes...and if you read my post closely, you would see that I am perfectly able to do what you had written. My issue is I cant figure out how to get the gunner to fire using the menu system.

Although I am in a position to thank you for your response, please watch your tone with me.

Checklist

(Provided that you've tried the options above)

Order them to be on the 'Danger' mode

Order them to 'Engage at will'

Check that your fire order is not on 'Cease fire'

Once those are checked, use your commanders view and with your 'target box' right click on the targets.

The AI should engage and fire away.

Good luck.

Well, it is my experience that an AI gunner will not fire his main cannon unless you command him to with the "Command Fire" button, and its quite annoying. If you switch him to the MG then he will happily engage at will all day long, but not with the the main gun.  Ive tried many different approaches and I cant get him to fire the main cannon at will.  If anyone know how to do it I would love to know.

BTW, I have the Atari digital version, 1.08.

The AI gunner will not switch guns of his own free will. You have to set his gun from COAX or MAINGUN first. If you tell him to engage a T-72 without switching him to MAINGUN first you'll get no shooting.

There is a key in the control settings for Command Fire, ctrl by default I think. The command menu Fire is a bit different, useful to get a rifleman to shoot a friendly or a target that it thinks is a bit too far to waste bullets on.

Look fellows. I simply cannot get this thing to work the way some suggest it works. My tank gunner will NEVER fire his main cannon at any target unless I hit the "Command Fire" Key every time I wish him to fire.

YES, I have the Main cannon selected.

YES, I have instructed the gunner to "Engage at Will".

Yet, he will never engage on his own.

This situation is worse in the Cobra. My Cobra gunner will only operate his MG on his own when I select a target, but will NEVER fire any sort of rocker, EVER.

YES, I have selected a target.

YES, I told him to Engage At Will.

YES, I have a Rocket type weapon selected.

NO, I dont have it set to manual fire.

Yet, no amount of yelling "open fire" or hitting the "command fire" button will coerce him fire a rocket.

Im missing something.

I played mostly tanks. Here is how I command them.

Press space and hold to issue commands for the gunner.

- Press f-key to switch weapons. Default is usually mg

- Move the cursor over the target and simply left click to select the target

- Press left control to fire or simply left click over the selected target

- You can also command different ammo types to be loaded via action menu. If I remember correctly the actions key is 6.

You're only talking about FFARs here, right? And you are flying the Cobra so that the rockets have a chance of hitting the target (=putting the dot in the target box), right? In my experience an AI gunner won't waste ammo on impossible shots (quite contrary to human ones), but if the chances are good he'll let loose.

The AI will use the FFAR rockets on his own only if the dot is centered in the target box and the diamond appears, its your job as pilot to line up the dot as close to the center of the box as possible.

As for the Hellfire guided missile you select targets for the gunner to fire the missile on.

The cannon on the Cobra needs to be beefed up in my opinion, too many bursts to destroy a Ural or even a PBX.
